A National League manager has been named the new favourite for the Southend United job after his side were knocked out of the playoffs on Saturday.
Southend United are reportedly said to want Barnet boss Darren Currie to replace Sol Campbell who left Roots Hall on the 30th of June.
The 45-year-old former Arsenal and England footballer took charge of the newly relegated Shrimpers back in October 2019, but won only four of his 23 games in charge.

Fans have given their reaction after seeing that the National League manager is named the new favourite for the Southend job…
Are we preparing for life in the National League?

I think Currie is a very credible choice. And he has demonstrated he can operate on a shoestring and get the best out of players.

We need someone who can keep us in the EFL … I’ve not seen enough evidence to suggests he’s the right man for that
— Oliver Graystone (@TweetGraystone) July 25, 2020
Personally, I’d want Phil Brown back. but if I had to pick from the names being mentioned, I wouldn’t mind a Maher or Fagan set up. Especially as the club will be mostly youth players.
— Oliver Graystone (@TweetGraystone) July 26, 2020
Apart from Maher he looks the best fit from the names mentioned. Given our fragile financial state Currie might be able to pick up a nugget or two from the National League once the embargo has been lifted. Whoever gets the job will need all the fans to get behind him and the team

I would be delighted. He’s certainly young and hungry and doesn’t have a reputation to tarnish like Maher or Tilson. And he has worked well with no money whatsoever which he would have to do again.

Yes but needs the funds and ability to be active in the transfer market otherwise it’s like going to a gun fight with a conker

Now now Matt…be positive
— Paul Lowry (@plowry1980) July 26, 2020
Chris, good choice but ultimately the success, or otherwise, depends on Uncle Ron finding the cash to allow a rebuild. Reduced season ticket revenue, reduced attendances, HMRC threat still exists….Ron will promise the earth and deliver…..?
— Peter Hawkins (@299Peter) July 26, 2020
I’d give him a chance. Team building and development is needed.
— John Box (@JohnBox58) July 25, 2020
On the face of it seems alright but I’m not gonna act like I have extensive knowledge of Barnet so who really knows… Their fans seem to love him though which is a good sign
— Luke (@Ljarvis27) July 25, 2020
Yes saw his interview he did after barnets defeat, showed passion and belief in his players, something we have lacked for a while!!
— andy haynes (@hund85) July 26, 2020
Definitely a candidate but Ron needs to give whoever he appoints the tools to work with, otherwise it’ll be a frustrating season all round. ⚽️?
— Andrew Beard (@GoneShrimping) July 25, 2020
He would be stupid to take it with all the financial issues there having
