Nathan Jones speaks on ‘banter’ with Stoke fans and having a ‘discussion’ with Ryan Shawcross in Charlton’s 1-0 win on Wednesday night.
The Addicks boss said it was an ’emotional night’, wildly celebrating after substitute Tyreece Campbell came on an scored in the 81st minute.
He received constant goading from Stoke fans throughout and shouted back at those in the away end come the final whistle.
The result sees Charlton sitting 18th in the Championship table, with 39 points from 31 games played, 7 points above the drop zone, and 8 points from the playoff places. Stoke are 14th with 43 points from 32 games played, 4 points from the playoff places.

He said: “It was a bit of an emotional night for me. I wanted to get off the pitch as soon as I possibly could.
“Stoke fans gave me stick when I was there so I expect that. I wouldn’t read too much into that, it’s part and parcel of it. They give me a little bit and I give them a little bit. They’ll realise that’s banter, especially when you’ve won the game.”
On if he had ‘crossed words’ with Shawcross: “No, not really. I’ve got a lot of respect for Shawcross. We had a discussion but I’m not going to argue with Ryan Shawcross, he’s 6ft 4in. I’m very brave but not that brave.
“I have a lot of respect for him. He was my captain when I was there and I had to deal with various facets when I was at Stoke but he certainly wasn’t one of them.”
Charlton manager Nathan Jones told BBC Radio London:
“They (Stoke fans) have given me stick ever since I was there. I mean Stoke fans gave me stick when I was there. So I expect that.
“I wouldn’t read too much into that. That’s part and parcel of it. They give me a little bit. I give them a little bit. Surely they realise that’s banter, especially when we have won the game.
“I thought we deserved it. I had a feeling about TC (Tyreece Campbell) tonight after last Friday night’s game where I didn’t feel he was at it. I gave him a little bit of a chat and I just had a feeling about him tonight.
“If he realises how good he is and gets his mental side of everything right, then the kid can go all the way.
“He moves like a Premier League player. How he controls things, how he shifts, how he runs – he has all the physical attributes to be that. It’s just up to us to bring that together.”
Stoke City midfielder Steven Nzonzi told BBC Radio Stoke:
“I don’t think it was a bad game overall. We just conceded that goal and we couldn’t score.
“Of course we have to do much better on the goal but then offensively as a team, we have to do much, much better. If you want to win games, you have to score goals.
“We are competitive players, we are a competitive team, we are a competitive club and obviously when you lose you have to be disappointed.
“But the season is not finished, you have to keep working hard and keep training hard and trying to get some points. We have to go and try and win as much as we can and try to play freely.”
Here’s how fans reacted after Nathan Jones speaks on having ‘banter’ with Stoke fans and a ‘discussion’ with Ryan Shawcross…
@cafc_charva: They can give it but can’t take it 🤣🤣🤣
@redfire20074: Are Managers not allowed to ‘give it back’ a little? Well done, NJ. Emotion, Passion and massive relief at a hard fought and huge 3pts last night. I’ll allow him that!He received more than a little abuse throughout the game. (And also at the Away fixture too btw). #cafc #uta 💪🏼
@cannondog79: Stoke fan here, I have no issue with him doing what he did. He had an awful time as manager for us, he is probably the worst to ever to set foot in our club (we have had some shit as well) He wears his heart on his sleeve so when he wins a game its like Jesus has rose again. Amen
@CharltonLife: We’ve a new entry this week pop pickers in the ‘Give it but can’t take it’ chart. Straight in at Number 1 go Stoke City fans after Nathan Jones reacted to getting vile taunts and abuse all game… #cafc
@NORTHWESTADDICK: Never change Nathan Jones, never fucking change. #rentfree #cafc
@DanielCafc1905: 😂😂😂 He’s in your head Jonesy Jonesy. My fucking gaffer
@Nozza_: More reserved at FT than I thought he’d be tbf. #cafc
@Richarmphotos: I bloody love the bloke, I’m so pleased he got one over on Stoke, we wouldn’t have reached the PL without him, and i can say first hand that he’s a really nice bloke. Up The Nathan Jones!! #LTFC #CAFC
@natashaeveritt7: People love to hate Nathan Jones but also moan about how boring and sanitised most managers are now. This man is box office and I’m all for it
@platty82639487: Stoke fans deserved all they got from NJ. Clearly bored at supporting their team and were abusive to Jones. Fair play to him for fighting back. Stoke you know ‘Nathan jones is in your head – in your head’ 🤣😂🤣 #cafc #StokeCity
@Wallin58: Thoroughly deserved, delighted for Campbell, big big win and all that…and yet my highlight will absolutely be Nathan Jones at FT. Worth so much more than the three points to see him rattle yet another set of fans 🤣 #cafc
@maccalad10: Stoke fans absolutely crying over this, never seen so many gimps spitting their dummies out cos NJ decided to give it back & had the last laugh, pure gold from NJ 😂😂😂👍🏼👊🏼
