Nathan Jones goes full David Brent in press conference as he comes out fighting for his job

Nathan Jones goes full David Brent on us in his press conference as he comes out fighting for his job at relegation battlers Southampton.

The Saints boss gave a hilarious answer to questions during his most recent press conference as pressure increases on the Welshman following their 3-0 defeat by Brentford.

This has put them at the bottom of the table, four points away from safety, with many surprised he’s still manager of the club.

Jones made a strange comment before Saturday’s six-pointer with Wolves. Jones, who continues to back his self despite the anger from Saints supporters, suggested that he could have stayed at a mining community and married an ‘nice Welsh girl’ if it wasn’t for the challenge.

When questioned about the difficult task at hand, he said: ‘Every situation is unique, I should probably keep my mouth shut but when I went to Luton as a player I was homesick.

‘The manager left and my next move was to go to Spain. No logic in that as I was homesick in Luton and I decided to go to Spain.

‘I enjoy a challenge, I could have stayed in the mining community and been a P.E teacher and had a nice life. Married a nice Welsh girl and all of those things… beautiful.’

The Southampton manager then got a laugh from the journalists when he added: ‘I want to test myself and that’s nothing against Welsh girls.’

After his time at Luton, he spent 2 years in Spain at Badajoz, Numancia, before returning to England for spells with Southend, Brighton, and Yevil Town.

Jones didn’t stay in Blaenrhondda, the mining village where he was born. However, he did marry during his short spell as Stoke City manager.

Jones married Laurie Jayne Jeans in June 2019. He revealed in November that many of his relatives are Southampton fans, including his wife’s.

‘A lot of my family are Southampton fans, on my wife’s side, so it doesn’t half help,’ he said.

‘But I feel really, really proud to be given the opportunity and I’m really looking forward to getting started.

‘On my wife’s side, they’re all Southampton fans, so her great grandfather played for the club, her grandfather was a season ticket holder who brought both his sons, which is obviously my father-in-law and his brother.

‘And then her brother is a big Southampton fan as well, so on their side, it’s amazing. No pressure for me obviously in keeping the family happy!

Fans have been critical of Jones since the 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

The Saints boss said that he had lost his success at Luton, which made him “one of the most respected managers in Europe”.

His comments were also criticised by Ian Wright and Chris Sutton. Sutton went further and suggested that the club would be better without him.

After Martin Semmens, CEO, admitted that nobody enjoyed his interview at St Mary’s fan forum on Tuesday, Jones said he was taking full responsibility for Southampton’s poor run which has seen them lose six of their last seven Premier League matches.

He also admitted that while he ‘loves the pressure,’ he is ‘hurting’ like any other Southampton fan.

Jones added in his press conference: ‘I want to test myself, I wanted to test myself as a player and survive. I knew I wasn’t brilliant as a player but I was the fittest human being in history and I wanted to cling onto this career and get as high as I can.

‘While I was doing that, I then took coaching badges and I learnt off people and wanted to be the best coach in the world.

‘Then came to a point I though I could be a manager. And I loved it, loved the pressure. Enjoyed my team playing well more than I did as a player as it’s a collective.

‘Now I’m hurting like anyone else like any Southampton fan. I’m not saying I’m the biggest Southampton fan but my life depends on this. But I love the pressure and the challenge as what else am I going to do?’

This is what fans said as Nathan Jones goes full David Brent in the press conference as he comes out fighting for his job…

@danlowe666: He needs to stop talking

@Tom_d2000: David Brent at the wheel

@AdamDriscoll92: It is estimated that 117 billion of our species have been born on Earth. Nathan Jones, in his footballing prime, was the fittest of them all.

@hiccup_pit: What is this man on?

@salimosaid: The fittest human being in history. I’m a big fan of Nathan Jones.

✅ Never speaks about football levels he doesn’t know about
✅ 50% win ratio (*not including losses)
✅ Was fittest human being in history
🦸🏻‍♂️ With the greatest respect, what a guy!
#SaintsFC

@AdamBrandon84: One of those managers every set of fans is gonna dread being linked to from now on.

@kvn_clmn: This guy is a TV character

@jgtrezeguet: Nathan Jones really talks like any next man down the pub 😭 You know them older guys who sit in the corner having a quiet pint on their ones, but will tell anyone unprovoked about their far-fetched alleged sporting achievements.

@GazWiIIiams: “Get as high as I can” well now we know why he’s always spouting absolutely nonsense in the press!

@paulsut81475964: I’d hate to imagine nathan Jones working in a small pit crew down a Welsh mine ! 5 went down only 4 came back

@nathanj3001: Is he, is he actually okay?

@luckysalt: He can still marry a Welsh woman and be a manager…

@LukeDavison18: He could been an everyday man but wanted to put himself through the hardships of being a premier league manager, respect

@NoIsco_NoDisco: And he has made that dream come true, to, AKA, himself. He talks the talk he does not walk the walk vis a vis – he’s only got 1 win in 7.

@TheJollygunner: “My world does not end within these four walls, Southampton’s a big place. And when I’ve finished with Southampton, there’s Romsey, Eastleigh, Beaulieu, you know I’ve got Netley, Ower, Winchester, Totton, you know. Because I am my own boss, I can – Brockenhurst – I can wake up…

@garylarkin16: “How could I hate Welsh women? My mum’s one”

@bwfc_elliot: I imagine instead of every comma he awkwardly says “you know”

@a779457: He’s very odd. Talks too much, clearly out of his depth and yet he carries on talking 🤷🏼‍♂️
