The League One outfit , who have been reported to the Football Association and EFL, say they could face repercussions if the ‘hurtful’ songs continue.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Morecambe FC is aware of an inappropriate chant, which has been levelled at opponents in recent fixtures including the game on Saturday against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Club has been reported to the FA & EFL with regards to this chanting from a section of supporters.

The Club utterly condemns those who are engaging in these inappropriate and hurtful chants, and we would like to apologise to any person(s) affected by such behaviour.

The overwhelming majority of our supporters set a fine example and show respect to their fellow supporters, opposition supporters, players and officials – as evidenced by their disapproval across social media and direct correspondence with the Club.

Any instance of anti-social and abusive behaviour, or chanting, has no place at Morecambe FC and we continue to work hard to eliminate this issue, as it goes against all of our values, and damages the good name of our Club.

Social media users reacted as Morecambe condemns fans over an ‘inappropriate’ chant sung in recent fixtures…

Elaine Smith: I hope those supporters realise that their chanting could have repercussions it’s such a shame a few spoil it for the majority ⚽

Matthew Norfolk: What the club going to do ban everyone that chants abusive songs?? Political correctness and the Snowflake community taking over! Its just a song that really has no malice, It happens at every ground and at every level!!Im afraid thats football, has been for years and will never stop!

Joseph Cobb: Matthew Norfolk nowt to do with being a snowflake. I go to the footie with my little lad. How do you explain a chant like that. Banter is class but there’s a line

Kevin Cragg: Matthew Norfolk that on Saturday is probably the worst thing you could call a fellow human the man is a lower league icon and deserved better

Peter Morley: Totally agree!!! No place in our club.. it your can’t be respectful dont attended our club..

Mark McKenna: Matthew Norfolk sorry but thats not right. How can you sing a song like that about a fella like him. Decent, hard-working and very kind and humble family man and say it has no malice. Its an awful chant. Worst i have heard. By a mile

Ash Knowles: It’s going to be quicker for the club to publish a list of songs that are allowed to be sung.

Andy Drew Lancaster: Possible fine incoming, with this the flairs and running onto the pitch, wtf is going on?. For such a small fan base that’s quite a shocking list of idiocy that I’d only expect off the big clubs. Why are we doing this to ourselves?

Will Holloway: Whilst the song was a bit moronic and no real relevance to the player (other than the fact it rhymed) I am not sure what offence has actually been committed. Will be interesting to see whether this will lead to fewer offensive chants.

Paul Doherty: The club prides itself on promoting a family atmosphere. It’s not a great place to take kids when the minority spoil the game 😡

Neil Gowland: Unfortunately we have a number of supporters who think it’s funny to use obscene and vulgar language and sing inappropriate songs around the ground. I certainly wouldn’t bring my family to games at the moment. It’s not a new thing, Morecambe fans were singing the horribly homophobic ‘hairy turkey’ song 25 years ago. If the club is serious about stopping it then they better show some genuine intent and issue a few banning orders rather than a slap on the wrist statement.

Alan Main: Stewards surely can take a lead here. I witnessed someone being ejected at another ground earlier this season for inappropriate behaviour which was reported by the guy sat next to him. It just needs the decent majority to stand up for what’s right. Not being a woke or a snowflake..it’s just having decency and integrity.. and if it’s part of football then perhaps we need to find out why and educate these people.

Callum Crookes: Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the song but I don’t see any offence to it, it’s a wild accusation when you think about it and he will have just brushed it off. Adebayo probably gets worse than that every other week and he was dishing it back when Wycombe scored. That chant is sung all over the country at every ground, every week. If you look at social media, thanks to Newcastle that song went viral, same with the awful “gets battered” song, so they are bound to be used by some set of supporters at every club, that’s what happens. It will die off eventually, remember Will Grigg?!? I wonder how many people who are not happy with it had this same mentality in the 80’s and 90’s when the infamous turkey song was being sung every week and was deemed acceptable at the time.

Rob Clague: Glad to see the club speaking out about that chant on Saturday. No place for that.

John Lancaster: We also need to bear in mind that there could easily be victims of sexual abuse attending games who at the very least won’t feel comfortable with this sort of thing being spoken. Have some consideration everyone!

Boris Biggin: Disappointed to see the ‘snowflake’ and ‘its only a chant’ arguments here. As some have pointed out, the same has been said about racial abuse and homophobic abuse over the 60 years I have been attending football. Sadly, I think the ‘its football’ argument may be nearer the truth. This sort of behaviour does not seem to tarnish other sports so football probably does attract more people who think obscene abuse is ok.
