More misery for Man Utd as Brentford win 3-1, avoid a red card and save a penalty in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Just 9 minutes in, Igor Thiago ran onto a long pass over the top and smashed the ball into the top corner for his fourth in seven games.
He doubled the hosts’ lead on 20 minutes, flicking the ball on to Kevin Schade, who made his way into the area, sent the ball across the box, Altay Bayindir pushed the ball back to Thiago, who managed to get it over the line.

7 minutes later, United got one back, Patrick Dorgu with a high cross from the left, CaoimhIn Kelleher under pressure from Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko netted on his second attempt.
Man Utd were given a penalty on 72 minutes, Bryan Mbeumo tugged back in the box, VAR check for a possible red card for denial of a goalscoring opportunity by Nathan Collins. After a four or so minute wait, Fernandes stepped up and Caoimhin Kelleher went to his left and pushed the ball away to keep it at 2-1 Brentford.
Kris Boyd on Soccer Saturday: “It has to be a red card. It is not a great penalty. United will be fuming Collins is still on the pitch.”
Sky Sports’ Zinny Boswell: “Bizarre from officials. Seems odd to say Collins did not deny a goalscoring opportunity. If that is the case, why is the penalty being given in the first place? Surely, it’s a red card and penalty or nothing.”
And right at the end, Brentford’s Mathias Jensen made it 3-1. Brentford on the break, Yarmoliuk skipped past Mbeumo, slipped it to Jensen in on the break and shoots past Bayindir.
Superb result for The Bees … just what was needed after last week and an incredible atmosphere… the Gtech exploded when Jensen’s shot hit the net and Thiago’s first was superb. Bees fans deserved that and the Brentford player earned a stunning result. COYB 🐝 ❤️ #BrentfordFC pic.twitter.com/KOJOuTbCd1

Premier League Match Centre said: “The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Collins deemed to pulled Mbeumo back. VAR also checked the referee’s call of yellow card to Collins – and deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball.”
The law: Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.), the offending player must be sent off.
Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim disagreed with the decision not to send off Brentford defender Nathan Collins for his pull on Bryan Mbeumo.
“They told me Bryan was not in control of the ball, I think he was not in control of the ball because he was pulled,” Amorim said in his post-match press conference.
“I feel for the referees, but I still feel they got it wrong”
Joe Cole believes Nathan Collins should’ve been sent off for denying Bryan Mbeumo a goalscoring opportunity 🗣

Ruben Amorim to TNT Sports: “The feeling is always the same. We want to win. We didn’t control the game. We played the game of Brentford. We were really confused, second balls, first balls, set pieces. The crucial moments they were against us. Tough to lose again, but we need to think about the next one.
“In some moments [I saw the fight seen against Chelsea.] But we can do better. That’s the main point.
“The first ball was a long ball after a recovery, we worked on that in the week. Set pieces, we worked on that in the week. We knew that the long balls, one first touch and they had the opportunity. We worked on that during the week, we have to do better.
“Today, we didn’t play our game. Just some moments, we had control and pushed them to the back. ]We have to play our game, not the opponent’s game.
“To lose at that club, it hurts a lot. We have to look at the next one. Everything is important in this club, not just the games at home.”
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews to BBC Sport:
“It was deserved, quite dramatic at times and the nature of the penalty, goals, VAR – the usual in this day and age. But first half we were very, very good. Caused a lot of problems with the ball, diligent and aggressive without the ball.
“We stuck to that, the subs were brilliant coming on.
On the penalty/VAR call: “It’s just the nature of it. It swings a little bit, one way or the other, a lot of crucial decisions that could or should have gone one way or the other. No real complaints about it.
On Igor Thiago: “He’s a top human being. He had to suffer last season being out injured the whole time, I know what type of person and the qualities he has as a football.
” That’s the key for the team, they will get better, better. Damsgaard was supplying a different frontline last year, this one has a lot of potential.
“We didn’t want to sit back and absorb pressure. We wanted to take the game to them. We wanted to get that third goal.
“The narrative of the club, I’ve heard a lot about it. But I’m calm about the situation.”
Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson to TNT Sports:
“It was a great run from him, I saw it quite early and it’s a great finish from him. It started us off well.
“The way we’re defending deep and the players we have up top like Kevin, Dango and Thiago making good runs forward, you can find them. We’ve done that in the home games, the forwards did really good.
“I’m enjoying football again. I’m enjoying the opportunity to come back in the Premier League, playing at the highest level week in, week out. I’m enjoying it as much as possible.
“When you concede the penalty but Kelleher made a great save. It’s a great three points of us, we deserved it over the game.
“I just try to be myself, when you get older and more experienced, people talk about leadership all the time. Everything else is just normal, you try to help the younger ones as it’s a young team.
“The World Cup is always in the back of your mind when you’re making decisions in the summer. But ultimately I wanted to come back and get that buzz back in the Premier League. I want to be in that England squad ready to try and win a World Cup.
“I’m pleased to be back, but I really feel I learned a lot in those couple of years being away. It wasn’t easy at time, there are things I did enjoy and learn and I’m thankful for that period away. Especially last season with Ajax and the new manager who came in, he instilled the love I had for the game back.
“This summer has been a lot of change – players, staff. But these people are not stupid, they know what they’re doing. The owners genuinely care about the players, that’s why I came here.”
Here’s how fans reacted to more misery for Man Utd as Brentford win 3-1, avoid a red card and save a penalty…
@mickcabble: Huge win for Brentford and Andrews 🐝🐝 a statement win. They say Brentford in trouble Brentford will struggle but we just continue to do what we do. Big name team toppled again #BrentfordFC
@alimullaley: Safe to say I did NOT see that one coming. Really good performance – especially in the first 20 minutes. Glad Kelleher got to redeem himself. Beautiful strike by Matti boy to finish it. Who else benched Thiago in FPL?! #BrentfordFC
@TommyLYeah: I think we can all agree that a back four and actually attacking teams is a far better way of playing. Showed some balls today!
@TheEalingRoad: Well then who expected that after last week?? We’re really difficult to analyse at the moment and we seem to be a completely different side at home. Have to take into account that United still aren’t a very good side, but we could have been out of sight in the first 20 mins if Collins and VDB had put their headers either side of the keeper. Kelleher still needs to significantly improve when it comes to collecting crosses as his mistake put us under pressure, but he more than made up for it with a brilliant penalty save. Otherwise we saw the game out pretty well and great to see Jensen back on the scoresheet with the type of finish we might have seen from him a few years ago. Onto City next week and we can carry some confidence into it after our performances against Chelsea and United 🔴⚪️🐝 DT🖋
@crunchbrentford: Wow wow wow. Thiago was on top today, brilliant performance and Kelleher what an important save, let’s keep this energy going further into the season
@bees4ever7: What an all round solid performance, great fight back after last week. 🐝❤️🐝
@Marcoloe: YOU REDS!!!! COYB!! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Another great victory over #ManUtd. Typical tactics from them – falling over, pretending to be fouled while fouling our players constantly. And Fernandes – don’t get me started. Should have been off. 5-0, 4-3, 3-1! Super Bees! #BrentfordFC #BREMUN
@BetweenThePosts:
🐝 #BrentfordFC know exactly who they are:
🧱 5-2-3 / 4-3-3 compact block
➡️ Direct balls into wide outlets
💣 Kayode’s long throws as corner-equivalents
🎯 Thiago ruthless in transition, Jensen seals it
Efficient, coherent, ruthless.
