MK Dons player backs manager’s claim “we’re the biggest club in League Two and league above”

MK Dons player Joe Tomlinson backs manager’s claim “we’re the biggest club in League Two and probably the league above”.

The quote has gone viral on social media, getting hundreds of replies with many fans amused and taking issue with what Joe had to say.

His comments came after his side’s 2-1 victory at home to Accrington, the result taking MK up to 12th in the table with 18 points from 13 games played while Accrington are 21st with 12 points from 12 games played.

Joe: It’s brilliant for the boys. Obviously, to go back to back now. So, it’s good. We’re feeling good. We’re getting there. Improvements are there. We’re hoping this is gonna give us some momentum now. And we’re gonna gonna go on a really good run like we did last year, but then obviously finish it off and keep going all the way to the top.

Interviewer: It’s a bit of a battle out there, though, but in any league, but I suppose League Two more so, you need to battle, you need to have those qualities

Joe: Exactly that. It was not an enjoyable game of football really for the spectator or anyone. It was not a great deal of good football being played, but that’s what they came. They came to do. They had a game plan. And, but, yes, so we take the 3 points. We battled. You have to do that. And, yeah, we did it. So I’m proud of the boys.

Interviewer: Good start, obviously. I mean, that that always helps, doesn’t it?

Joe: Yeah. So obviously, Saturday as well, and then and then tonight, it sets us up. We still want that clean sheet. That’s the annoying one. We should see games out more. It should be more comfortable. But, yeah, it was obviously a great start, and we look into that every game.

Interviewer: And then you hooked up with a decent strike.

Joe: Yeah. I can always do that. So, yeah, it was obviously just came out to me on the edge of the box and thought I’d have a go. So, yeah, really pleased to help that. Obviously, the the main thing is the 3 points for the team.

Interviewer: Yeah. I mean, one which obviously is the only thing that matters in a lot of ways, but the next step, I suppose, is to to be tune up and then just see out the game and be more in control of it.

Joe: Exactly that. And that’s the kind of the the frustrating point from it is, again, Saturday, we conceded. Tonight, we conceded. We haven’t had that clean sheet for a while. That’s the frustrating thing. That’s the final thing, to put into place because then we keep a clean sheet. Tonight, we go on. We can make it kinda 234. Do you know what I mean? So it’s like but then as soon as we concede, they then step on, and it changes the game completely. So that’s the last thing we kind of need to keep going and proving and working on because when we get to that point, games will certainly be more enjoyable.

Interviewer: You called it a battle. I mean, you had your own battle on the on the far side at one point, didn’t you?

Joe: Yeah. It was… Ref made a decision, whether I agree with it or not is a different thing. But, yes, and to be fair to him to the lad, he came and apologised, because he knew how bad it was. So yeah.

Interviewer: Since the new head coach has come in, I mean, certainly from from our perspective, we’re getting, you know, an idea of, obviously, what he’s like. But he seems to be making sure that we know and everyone knows this is a big club that you’re playing for, that the club that, you know, that have been that you’re supporting as a fan. And is that getting through, like, to the place? Is that how he is behind closed doors as well?

Joe: Yeah. I understand. So what you what you see is what you get, which is brilliant. I’ve worked with him before and as I say, it’s I know how he’d come in and how he would be and it’s brilliant for the boys and he’s completely right. We’re the biggest club in the league. We’re the biggest club in probably the league above as well. I mean, so there’s so much potential here. With the players we’ve got in a changing room, we should be really up there. Shouldn’t be where we are now. Obviously, we’re making the steps. We know that. We’ve gone back to back now. So we just gotta keep working on it and, showing where we should be.

Here’s how fans reacted as the MK Dons player backs his manager’s claim “we’re the biggest club in League Two and league above”…

@PieCarlton: A measurement are they biggest in League 1 and 2?

@GeoffNorcott: They’re not even the biggest club whose name includes ‘Don’.

@ColinPep1: Not bigger than any club in League One and certainly not bigger than Grimsby, Chesterfield, Notts County, Bradford, Crewe, Port Vale, Doncaster, AFC Wimbledon, Walsall, Gillingham, Tranmere, Swindon or Carlisle #MKDons

@_danhayward01: What 😂😂😂

@OwenReeman3: You aren’t even the biggest club with ‘Don’ in your name, let alone biggest in the league and league above 😭

@MichaelRealReed: Wycombe Wanderers are bigger than you

@ValleyFloydFred: This whole Millwall esque No One Likes Us mantra is cringe. You’re not liked because your club represents the worst of greed and football community harm.

@stephen_dimmock:
Clubs in the National League or below that are bigger:
Southend
Oldham
Rochdale
York
Yeovil
Halifax
Altrincham
Hartlepool
Aldershot
Barnet
Scunthorpe
Darlington
Kidderminster
Torquay
Hereford
Chester
Maidstone
Macclesfield
Bury

@leamingtonpete: So big you couldn’t muster 6k in the frenzied city of roundabout land.

@Smiffy300583: MK Dons are NOT a club they’re a franchise so it doesn’t matter how high they go they’ll never be a big club!!

@daviesnotts1: Is he on fucking crack??

@roystar11: I’d have to climb a very long way down the football pyramid to find a club I didn’t consider to be bigger than MK Dons.

@Stephen_Mills85: The empty seats in your stadium says otherwise…

@bfdbannon: There’s clubs in the national league north/south bigger than you 😭😭

@scottbrown85: 😂😂😂 league above is he messing. There about 12 ex premier league teams in the league above he’s at mk dons 😂😂

@Lauren_Sadlerx: The first manager since sacking Karl Robinson 8 years ago that’s happy for himself and the players to embrace the view held towards our club and create a 91 v 1 mentality. No being nice pointlessly. I’m so here for it

@jkanalysis7: Joe Tomlinson has just implied that MK Dons are bigger than Birmingham City, my god.

@SiWheeler78: Slashed their ticket prices & a grand total of 5,084 show up and then they put out drivel like this. Milton Keynes has rejected franchise football. Meanwhile, they remain silent on their “owner representative”. This isn’t football, this is franchise football.

@Keynes39: The absolute fume and disbelief this has caused is superb

@GrimsbyBoy1984: Expecting a full away allocation and it filled with ‘the biggest club of the league’ in Town , right back to reality will they bring over 100 ? #GTFC #MKDons

@charlietabloid: What the fuck are they on now? Have they confused size of stadium with size of club? Even then Birmingham and Charlton want a word.

@mattbennotts: Think they are conflating big ground, with big club, nothing at MK Dons is big in any other terms, is ridiculous, in 20 years they have never realised any perceived growth into a big club

@ColinPep1: They think of ‘biggest’ as meaning stadium capacity only, right? 5k yesterday in their 31k ground at discounted prices. Not got the fanbase, not got any history (none they could speak positively about anyway). League Two club at best in a Championship stadium.

@sam__mkd: oh i fucking love this bloke so much, may have had a slow season but u cant not like JT, gonna have everyone on strings

@odo332001: What an absolute bell end…. MK Franchise, can’t even get a quarter of their stand full, have no history, and tbh, not even a proper club, they were made by stealing another club….

@saddler1982: They are the biggest team that shouldn’t be in the football league. And come to think of it, the smallest as well because everyone else has earnt their place. I may be a broken record but never forget

@FansAgainstVAR_: There’s clubs in step 4 of non league bigger than MK dons btw.

@SxlterYT: Cringiest club. Including us there’s more then half the league bigger then these tinpot fucks and clubs in league 2 even like Bradford and Notts County. #Htafc
