Millwall’s Mason Bennett taunts Derby fans; pitch invader stops goal opportunity

Millwall’s Mason Bennett taunts Derby fans while a pitch invader stops the Rams from scoring to get themselves back in the game.

Derby’s survival hopes suffered a blow as Millwall maintained their impressive record at Pride Park with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals in the first half from Jed Wallace and Tyler Burey.

It put the away side in control and although Jake Cooper put through his own net late on, they saw the game out to complete a fifth victory in the last seven visits to Derby.

Derby had plenty of the ball but could not break down a well organised Millwall side who could have scored more goals on the night.

The game also saw one moment where a pitch invader ran onto the pitch, preventing Derby from getting a goal when they most needed it.

Derby were even mocked by Millwall winger Mason Bennett who even stated prior to the Championship encounter that he would celebrate if he scored against his old club.

While he didn’t get on the scoresheet, he still stuck to his word in some way by cupping his ears aimed at the home fans.

Bennett left Derby to join Millwall in the summer of 2020 after a successful loan spell at the club the season before.

Many will recall a few months back where he drove past Pride Park and could be heard saying “fucking burn”.

Bennett took to his Twitter to address the Snapchat video, which was meant to be sent to a friend as a ‘private joke’.

He said: “The video that’s come out was a private joke, didn’t mean any harm to the derby fans. The club has been great with me and will always be greatful [sic]. I apologise if I’ve offended anyone.

“There is a picture of my good friend shinz and it was a joke to him.”

What the managers said post-match…

Derby’s Wayne Rooney: “We conceded two sloppy goals and then, give Millwall credit, they defended the box very well.

“But we kept pushing and I can’t knock the players, they kept going to the end and kept fighting.

“We will keep going and keep fighting.

“It’s a setback and a bad result but we’ll lose more games from now to the end of the season and it’s about the games we win.

“We need to turn some of the draws, especially away from home into wins, and we will keep fighting.

“As I keep saying, this league can throw up anything so we will keep going and believing.”

Millwall’s Gary Rowett: “We’ve had some good results here but it’s a tough place to come and what I would say is Derby have done incredibly well this season.

“I think football sometimes transcends rivalry and you have to just say they’ve done an incredible job.

“It would have been very easy to be demotivated but a young team and Wayne, a young manager, have been brilliant.

“I thought we were fairly comfortable first half and we had a period in the second where we looked really, really comfortable and it was probably the most innocuous ball into the box all game that ends up causing us a problem.

“It made for a really nervy last five or six minutes and I felt like a last minute goal was coming but in fairness to the players we dug in and got what I thought was a deserved result.”

Social media users reacted as Millwall’s Mason Bennett taunts Derby fans and a pitch invader stops a potential goal opportunity…

@saveDCFC: To the Derby fan who invaded the pitch as the side looked for a winner, fuck off and don’t come back. And as for your mates who clearly filmed the debacle, you can fuck off too. Absolute wasters who will do anything for social media. #DCFC

@RuthPri57101394: Are these pitch invasions actually Derby fans?! Or some idiots from other clubs trying to get us fines🤔🤔. Happening too often 🤷‍♀️. On to the next one. It’s not over till it’s over. #dcfc @dcfcofficial

@Laurrierichard1: Hope the steward who went over the boards was ok They will learn at some point it’s not welcome!!!!! 😡

@cLawn92: Lifetime ban for the divvy please. First game by the looks of it anyway, who would come on in injury time with us losing and running out of time?!

@bowls77: Absolute knob head! Pretty sure it was a Derby fan too…. Why would you do that in stoppage time when we’re desperately seeking a goal?!

@Cbodill: agree it’s down to the individual to stop being such a knob head, and should be banned for a very long time, but would like to know why they have all managed to get so far before stewards react???

@FosterShandy88: Everyone that enters the pitch that shouldn’t should have a custodial sentence.Make examples but stick to it. 6 months sentence. Repeat offenders 2 years and ban for life

@GeorgeMyatt: The fact that his shit mates were recording it as well 🙄

@JPMillwall2: Mason Bennett literally filmed himself telling Derby to ‘fucking burn’, skinned half their team to set up our goal then ran off cupping his ears at their disabled section. Legend status confirmed
