Millwall fans put pressure on Alex Neil after an ‘unacceptable’ 4-0 defeat to Coventry, who have made it clear they are promotion contenders.
Haji Wright scored twice, with late goals from Ellis Simms and Kaine Kesler-Hayden, with Coventry putting in a clinical display and a solid team performance overall under Frank Lampard.
The Sky Blues remain unbeaten, are up to 2nd place with 16 points from 8 games played, two points behind leaders Middlesbrough, and are the Championship’s top scorers with 22 goals in eight matches. Millwall are 12th with 11 points from the same amount of games played.
Millwall boss Alex Neil: “I thought we had as many opportunities as Coventry did, but we weren’t clinical enough and obviously the first goal affects the game. We make a mistake, they manage to then go and capitalise.
“I thought you could see after that there were a few misplaced passes probably in the next two or three minutes after that – you could see that it certainly rattled us a little bit.
“I thought we started the second half really well, we had a couple of really good opportunities to get the next goal, didn’t take any of them.
“Their second goal – their striker drops down, plays it wide then runs off us and lands in the middle of the box – was completely unlike us and that made it difficult.
“The game was decided in both boxes and we weren’t good enough.”

Neil was asked if he put his side’s attacking woes in that game to a final ball issue, per NewsAtDen: “It’s a final ball issue, final run issue, final combination, final strike,” Neil said. “You can put it down to a whole host of things.
“We worked the ball really well to get to those points, and then that last little bit, we know what our runs look like, we know what our quality should look like. We didn’t pick people out. We didn’t run under the ball at times. The cutback was on, we didn’t utilize it.
“Lack of quality, lack of detail, whatever you want to put it down to, or a combination of all of them.
“Both boxes decided the game for me. I thought that we had as many opportunities as probably Coventry did. We weren’t clinical enough.
“The first goal obviously affects the game. We make a mistake, and they manage to then go and capitalise. You could see after that, there were a few misplaced passes, probably the next two, three minutes after that, you could see that it certainly rattled us a little bit.
“We started the second half really well. We had a couple of opportunities to get the next goal, didn’t take any of them.
“Their second goal, the striker drops down, plays it wide, and then runs off us and lands in the middle of the box and scores, which is completely unlike us.That then makes it difficult.
“We have another couple of chances to score, don’t take any of them.
“They then have a set play. We don’t deal with well enough. We lose a header, people come fishing for it, we lose the header at the back post, and then from there, the game just drifts away.
“But tonight, for me, the game was decided in that box and that box, and we weren’t good enough in either.”
On what he made of the defensive mistakes, Neil said, per NewsAtDen: “It’s difficult. I’ll need to watch it back.
“But what I felt was, I thought we played some good stuff between both boxes to try and create opportunities to score, but when we got there, we were toothless. We didn’t feel as if we were going to put the ball in the back of the net.
“Whereas I didn’t think they had as much control in the game as we did, but when they got into the final third, they looked threatening, and that was the difference in the game.”
Coventry City boss Frank Lampard said to BBC CWR: “An outstanding performance at a tough place to come where they don’t get beaten much.
“The focus of the team was great. As a complete performance from high pressing and a bit of control in the first half to being a bit more compact and dangerous in the transition, the team showed a couple of different faces today and good ones.
“We work really hard – we’ve seen progress for sure and I think the fans are relating to what they’re seeing on the pitch with the players, their focus, their passion.
“It’s going to be difficult to be where we want to be this season because of the size of our squad and the challenges that come with this league, but if we can keep this togetherness and keep playing we can have a chance.”
As mentioned Millwall fans put pressure on Alex Neil after the ‘unacceptable’ 4-0 defeat to Coventry…
@MFCPayback: Performances at home are a joke! 0-3 vs Middlesbrough 0-4 today. Teams can’t wait to come to the Den. Hang your heads in shame.
@MillwallDave2: Disgusting. Embarrassing at both ends of the pitch. No Millwall team should ever lose 4-0 at home. Serious questions need to be asked. Poor team selection, poor approach play. Not good enough.
@evanpolak123: As well as the players, when are we going to start pointing fingers at the manager. We create nothing #Millwall
@JJSavils2005: Useless. Clock is ticking on Alex Neil to deliver
@edgey_1: Piss poor management tonight poor team selection ballo getting dropped and not even getting on the pitch baffled me. Needs some big changes Saturday no 10 doesn’t even work need 2 players behind the striker
@mfc_noah85: It’s crazy how Neil has drained the confidence out of a striker who was scoring goals for fun at the start of this year. His tactics have been shit this season and we are the second lowest scoring team in the championship with one of the best creating attacks we’ve had #Millwall
@millwallhazza: This club is an embarrassment. Sack Alex Neil now fucking awful tactics and can’t even score. Something is happening behind the scenes which is worrying and needs to be fixed instantly. Shit again and onto Saturday when we lose again. Embarrassing performance
@DaveyBurner: Pressure needs to be put on Neil for our home performances. Unacceptable
@Stephenshaw192: Disgraceful, AN now on borrowed time, we won’t accept home form like this
@JE05900138: When do we start asking questions of Alex Neil. If this was Harris or Rowett there would be riots. We’ve spent millions, ground is empty with no atmosphere. We also need new songs but that’s one for another day.
@DavidMitchSoton: 63% possession says it all. Loads of tippy tappy bollocks with no end product. As long as we’ve got some players with sell on value, that’s all that matters I suppose.
@MattBennett93: Couldn’t be arsed tonight, lads? Fair play.
@WaylanderDV: Not good enough. Caught offside far too many times. Not signing more fullbacks in the summer transfer will cost us this season. AN needs a solution to home form or we’ll be in big trouble.
@Connor43741536: We are fucking pony and the thought of West Brom at the weekend , unlike the players I know I’ll turn up Saturday
@MLong94:
Remember when we was half decent at home and didn’t roll over for every team that rocks up?
“It’s a hard place to play”
Yeah for Millwall.
Bring back the 🐐 let him sling gallen and fairbrother out by the scruff of their necks too. The way we let this legend walk out to be stripped of our identity to be run by a charlton reject and some fucking yuppy is a joke. Only this man gets this club pic.twitter.com/R5LeXikAVI
