Middlesbrough score dramatic 90 minute winner after West Brom fought back to level

Middlesbrough score a dramatic 90 minute winner after West Brom fought back with two quick fire goals to level.

Boro took the lead with an own goal by Charlie Taylor just before half time, then a fine finish from Sam Silvera made it 2-0 on 58 minutes.

But West Brom fought back brilliantly through Isaac Price with a free-kick, and Jed Wallace in a five-minute spell.

Substitute Delano Burgzorg then won it for Boro with a 90th-minute winner, scoring his first goal since August to give his side a crucial 3-2 victory.

The result sees Kim Hellberg’s side close the gap on Championship leaders Coventry to within 3 points, while also going 5 points clear of third-placed Ipswich in the promotion race.

West Brom are 18th with 31 points from 27 games played, and 7 points above the drop zone, but could be in further danger depending on the rest of the weekend’s action.

West Brom’s Eric Ramsay:

“It’s difficult to not feel very disappointed, I wouldn’t be human if that wasn’t the case.

“Certainly after we got ourselves back in the game you could only see one winner, the fact we haven’t is disappointing.

“I’m very much wrapped in the process that we get better and I’m not going to get too drawn into the highs and lows but it’s difficult not to experience that today. It’s difficult as a human being not to get swept up in that.

“When we strip the emotion away and look at a very balanced game against a very good team after three days with a couple of difficulties, that will amount to us feeling good about what we can take forward.

“At this stage of the season, losing games at home is not ideal, that’s not lost on me.”

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg told Sky Sports:

“That was football, the team playing at home got the free kick and it got the crowd with them, which created a lot of energy and the ball was back and forward a lot during that time.

“Then it was 2-2 and this crowd were jumping up and down and for the players to come back from this situation and to go and win it shows how strong this group is. It is unbelievable!

“We are facing a very good team and they have some unbelievable players, but for a long time we were very good.

“In the first 10 minutes we were very, very dominant, even if we didn’t get into enough high positions with that dominance. Then in the last 20 minutes of the first half we were unbelievable just collecting the ball and kept playing.”

Burgzorg said to Sky Sports:

“It was a tough game but at the end we take the three points and that’s the most important thing.

“Everybody believed in it and when I came on I thought ‘today i have to score’

“We are in a good position now, everybody is happy and everybody wants to fight for each other.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Middlesbrough score a dramatic 90 minute winner just as West Brom fought back to level…

@_TY_97: What a win, Hellberg has found us a way to win an okay good football, great performance and to come back from a panic and win. ZORG what a winner mid medical

@joe99090812: Everyone… no one slate Burgzorg now. He’s off you can tell. But he’s just scored the most important goal in our season. Thank you Della x

@BoroNYC1876: Good win. Should’ve been more comfortable. Hellberg won’t have liked how the players switched off for 10-15 minutes but to his credit he changed the system and we regained control. UTB 🔴⚪️

@bryce_imiela: Great to see a manager be proactive and noticing we needed Browne in the centre with Morris and Hackney in that 2nd half. Will end up with an aneurysm one of these days lads 😂😂 top win. UTB

@david_sedgewick: We all slag della off, if thats a parting goal, thank you very much the zorg, will go down in boro folklore, wasnt our best game but 3 points are massive 🚢🚢

@jamescooksey_: Results will come eventually. Looked the most organised I’ve seen in months. #wba

@Digforgold1: Head coach got his tactics all wrong, far too deep lying formation, if he thinks the Albion fans will settle for 28% possession at home then he will be mistaken, we have to go at teams our defence isn’t good enough to sit deep

@hamzadarby: My thoughts: Never recovered from selling Palmer. Our goalkeepers don’t make enough saves. Taylor isn’t good enough. Midfield is a massive priority in the Transfer Market. (As well as Goalkeeper).

@ESkelding: A lot of potential here, Boro a very good side who scored their chances

@SilkyStapes: I think we need to accept the players we have are of low quality. They make bad decisions on and off the ball and are technically poor. They can’t pass that well and their first touch is shocking. League 1 is looking ever more realistic!!

@teesboys: Don’t be disheartened you showed a lot of positives there, I think you lot definitely have the capacity to go on a good run.

@KipreSun: Story of the season that, second half leaves me very optimistic about the future though.

@exefavv: lot of positives id say, against a. very good well drilled middlesborough side who are 2nd in the league 🤷🏽‍♂️ the players need looking at not just the manager. very good in game management 2nd half. things like this take time, can’t expect to come out flying against one of best sid

@wallacepoulter: Match where I’m torn. From the Northeast originally, always like to see Boro doing well. Have a soft spot for the Baggies. Grew up in the 70s when West Brom were such a fun team and I was the West Brom scribe for Soccernet the Great Escape season. Hope you folks come good again
