Mansfield pull off coup with shock signing of Premier League player

Mansfield Town pull off a coup with the shock signing of Premier League player Matty Longstaff, and boy has it left fans stunned.

The Stags completed a late transfer deadline day double loan deal by signing the midfielder Matty Longstaff as well as Hibernian winger Jamie Murphy.

Longstaff, 21, and Murphy, 32, have both joined for the rest of the season with Nigel Clough’s in-form side gunning for promotion from League Two.

Both are free to play for sixth-placed Mansfield at Harrogate on Tuesday night, and Murphy previously played under Clough at both Sheffield United and Burton.

Newcastle academy product Matty Longstaff, whose elder brother Sean is still at St James’ Park, has also been in the Scottish Premier League this season, having gone out on loan to Aberdeen in August.

He made his name with a late winner against Manchester United in October 2019, and that goal won him a Premier League Goal of the Month award.

He also scored twice for the Magpies in 14 Premier League appearances, both against the Red Devils, with the second coming in the return game at Old Trafford.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on loan until the end of the season.

A product of the Newcastle United academy, Matty joins the Stags with good pedigree having scored twice for the Toon in 14 Premier League appearances.

The 21-year-old made his debut for the Magpies in August 2019 against Leicester City in the EFL Cup.

Two months later, the midfielder secured a Premier League Goal of the Month award for an outstanding strike against Manchester United at St. James’ Park.

Matty scored against the Red Devils for a second time in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

The Rotherham-born maestro signed a contract extension with Newcastle at the end of the 19-20 season, playing alongside his older brother Sean.

In August 2021, Matty joined Aberdeen on loan. After five appearances with the Dons, he returned to Newcastle.

“To get a good midfielder with Premier League experience is a coup for us,” Stags’ boss Nigel Clough.

“We’re looking forward to working with Matty and get him playing some regular football.

“Having let Harry Charsley go to Port Vale, it’s a good reinforcement for us in the midfield area.”
