Macclesfield go viral in ‘most pre-season goal’ you’ll ever see against calamitous West Brom

Macclesfield go viral in the ‘most pre-season goal’ you’ll ever see against a calamitous but young West Brom side in midweek.

The Silkmen extended their unbeaten pre-season run to four games, thanks to a 2–0 victory against the Championship outfit’s weaker side with most of the first team players playing against Stevenage and Northampton Town.

After Man of the Match Marcelo Pitaluga made an incredible save to deny The Baggies an early lead, Macclesfield broke the deadlock with a flowing move – converted by one of the four trialists on show.

The second period saw the hosts dominate proceedings as they looked for a second and this came in the dying stages of the match when Andy Owens slotted the ball home after a mix-up in the West Brom defence as you can see in the clip below which has gone on to get over 500,000 views…

Danny Whitaker said after the game: I thought both sides played it played it, in true true spirit um and i think i think we were absolutely outstanding certain moments of the game um you know i think we thoroughly deserve the win and fair play to the lads they’ve put a real good shift in they’ve worked hard in possession out of possession which you have to do um ou know couldn’t be happier really

Interviewer: They named four trials in starting tonight three of whom were part of your back line will that indicate where you are looking to to strengthen most

DW: Yeah yeah we haven’t got as much cover in those areas so you know we do need that because there will be there will be little knocks little injuries during the season and potentially suspension so we do need that cover so that is a priority so hence why we’re looking at those players

Interviewer: Now the game was sparking to life with a phenomenal save from Marcelo Pitaluga but he certainly wasn’t all one way was it

DW: No it certainly wasn’t i mean we we had some fantastic moments going forward we really did you know we could we could have had a few more goals and it wasn’t to be but you know we took the goals well that we did create and um you know it was very pleasing to see

Interviewer: And when we did make the breakthrough it’s a great cross and a perfectly executed glancing header from a Trialist to give us the lead

DW: Yeah it was it was you know you make the movement um it’s kind of a little bit of a double movement and then gone in behind free header, but you still got to put it in um and he did so.

Interviewer: Our second strike had an element of fortune in it of course but in your opinion was it deserved

DW: Of course it was yeah there was a a great piece of play um before that that that warranted a goal we didn’t get it but uh it just goes to show you you work hard you you get you just rewards and Andy did really he’d come on and he had a real effect he was getting about he’s putting himself about winning his his first and second balls and just causing a problem for their defenders really which is what he does

Danny Whitaker praised Pitaluga, saying: “Marcelo put in a good, good, solid performance, commanding his box. He made some fantastic saves.”

“Me and the goalkeeper coach Dom, we spoke about that and highlighted that in terms of commanding his box, being on the front foot, coming out for crosses and punching or catching if he can,” he added.

“So that was something we were going to be working on this week, and it was just fantastic to see that he has got that in his locker.

“Maybe it will just take him a few more games to settle down and get used to this new environment and the players around him.

“So based on that, hopefully he kicks on and keeps progressing.”

It wasn’t the first blunder from West Brom this pre-season either, after putting one in their own net against Leyton Orient last week.

In the 79th minute of that game, there was great pressure on a passback from Anthony Georgiou which ensured the ball crossed the line off West Brom man Cedric Kipre to drag the O’s back into the game, but still lost.
