Luton’s Sonny Bradley given oxygen after nasty injury | Nathan Jones slams ref over no penalty call

Luton’s Sonny Bradley was given oxygen before being stretchered off after suffering a rather nasty injury against Reading on Tuesday.

The Hatters played host to the Royals to Kenilworth Road with the game ending 0-0 but Nathan Jones was left with two fresh injury concerns, with Bradley landing awkward on his leg while Tom Lockyer also had to be subbed off.

Bradley had to be replaced by Luke Berry shortly after the half-hour mark following a five-minute pause.

Speaking after the game, Nathan Jones said of Bradley: “We don’t know yet [the extent of his injury]. When you knock someone who is going up for the ball, they can land awkwardly and that is what it was. It was a cheap little foul that you don’t want to see because it is very difficult, when they land it can cause a serious injury and hopefully it is not.”

And on Lockyer, Jones said: “It wasn’t concussion, he just had a real whack in the face. It wasn’t an elbow or anything, he headed the back of his head. It was an honest challenge in terms of everything, no malice in anyway, but Locks is in such good form at the minute. He’s aggressive, he wants to defend well and I’m really proud of him for how he’s playing at the minute.”

Taking to social media soon after, Birmingham City captain and former Watford player Troy Deeney sent best wishes to Luton’s Sonny Bradley.

Deeney said: “Thoughts go out to Luton captain Bradley that doesn’t look good at all, wish him all the best don’t like to see that.”

Meanwhile, Nathan Jones slams ref John Brooks over a no penalty call in the first half of their goalless Championship draw against Reading at Kenilworth Road.

With the Hatters sending a corner into the box, Tom Lockyer appeared to be grappled to the ground by a Reading defender, with Brooks, who had a questionable night, not blowing his whistle for a spot-kick.

Jones said afterwards: “There’s a stonewall penalty, an absolutely stonewall penalty and it’s right in front of him.

“You can’t show them, but it’s mental, as it’s literally two yards in front of him, he’s looking directly at it.

“Lockyer gets away and he’s rugby tackled, the ball is delivered and he’s rugby tackled, it’s crazy how he hasn’t given it.

“I don’t know how he hasn’t given it, that’s the biggest thing.

“It was one of those games where he let a lot go for both sides, he was a bit inconsistent, but my biggest gripe is the penalty, it was nailed on.”

“It was a hard-fought point, a bit of a robust Championship game and I thought we stood up to that. We started really well, had some real good situations, a couple of opportunities, but just never demonstrated enough quality.

“It was a tough, tough game, Reading are tough to play against. They sit in, they’ve got strong lads, are direct, play at their tempo, we tried to create our tempo. We had to defend our box with everything, we’ve got all our centre-halves missing again, so they’ve had to really dig in and I’m proud of that performance in terms of the defensive side.”

Reading’s Paul Ince: “As much as it’s a point, I’m disappointed we didn’t get the three, as we had enough chances. I’m not one for stats, but coming away to Luton and having 17 attempts on goal and not scoring any of them, is disappointing. Andy Carroll has two headers you expect him to eat up, Shane Long in the last minute, three yards out, these are the chances you’ve got to take. Tom (Ince) hits one and the keeper makes a great save, Tyrese (Fornah) hits one and you think it’s in from 20 yards out, so it just didn’t go our away today and we’re disappointed not to pick up the three points.

“Credit to the guys at the back, I thought they were outstanding and to keep a clean sheet here is a great achievement, as it’s not an easy place to come. It’s tight, the fans are great, they’ve got a great manager, and you don’t get into the play-offs last year if you’re not a very good side. We knew that, we had to battle, at times you’ve just to be calm and get the ball down in the play – and when we did we looked a very dangerous side.”

Nathan Jones also didn’t hold back when it came to the topic of the impact the World Cup is having on the fixture schedule and injury problems.

“No one wants to go to a World Cup in November, it’s a waste of time.”

Fans gave their reaction with Luton’s Sonny Bradley given oxygen after a nasty injury and Nathan Jones slams the ref over the no penalty call…

@itsnick_bp: “Premier League ref” 😂 feel horrid for Sonny though that looks very bad.

@LTFC_Gaz: That’s worse than what Campbell got booked for, far more dangerous.

@neil3345: No intention to play the ball and just went into Bradley whilst off the ground. A red card in rugby but allowed in football, apparently. #ltfc

@lukerfc08: It’s not rugby though is it mate. Happens every game in football and he got an unfortunate injury

@ajfkosovo: The ref was dreadful. He eventually booked Carroll near the end for something he’d been doing all game. Horrible for Bradley, that’s a terrible injury

@antmccool7: My son & I both had what this looks like 3 times. that rush off pain is unreal. All were unstable landings. My sons career was finished as a result, but we never blamed anyone, it’s football. Yes it’s a foul, but no intent for that outcome. Good luck Sonny, let’s hope I’m wrong

@DH_Editz:
Injury doesn’t = foul.
This is a fair attempt to get the ball.
The landing is just unlucky.

@FilthyTops: Jesus Christ it gets worse every time 😬

@Paragoric: Fucking hell..poor SB…get well soon

@dinghugo6: Where is the foul, honestly? If he doesn’t go down injured, nobody would call for a foul. Shame he got injured and hope he’s alright but It’s an Airial duel in a contact sport, never a foul #readingfc #ltfc

@JRosee1995x: Landed just like that and boom 6 months out injured 👍🏻

@Zakwafc1932: that landing is sickening

@BrandJLancaster: Gets worse everytime i watch it get well soon @SonnyBradley91 🙏🙏 how was that not a foul??

@kd02__: ACL is gone

@keanomfc: I felt that 🫠🫠

@ConnorFlynn2: No attempt for the ball there. Best wishes @SonnyBradley91 hope it’s not too serious

@_k3lsx: That landing looks absolutely awful 😩🤮

@danielchapman86: Jesus, look at his leg when he lands 😔

@abond98: I’ve done this 3 times, and had knee surgery 3 times…that sort of says it all

@Dnlchzz: That looks awful for Bradley, he’s had a torrid season bless him. Big loss.

@ElmParkRoyals: Now I’ve seen the replay the ref has 100% missed a penalty for Luton. Mbengue rugby tackles the Luton player during the Lumley dropping the ball corner incident.

@ChezvegasRoyal: We certainly seem to have got away with a few things tonight…not least the corner we got when Meite headed it wide…

@Dubstep1988: Shhhhhh! (But yes.)

@NKDING43: Was too busy shitting myself about Lumley dropping the ball to spot that. The refs at this level are so bad it’s honestly a joke

@Chartley1983: Shows how shit the officials are at Championship level.

@shakefon: I went off on one about us not getting a pen Saturday so only fair I acknowledge this one too. Championship refs eh!

@DH_Editz: That’s a penalty from mbengue – very lucky. #readingfc
