Luton Town boss Rob Edwards was left frustrated at being denied a ‘stonewall’ penalty with Carlton Morris booked for protesting.
The incident involved a handball by Cardiff’s Calum Chambers, with players’ calls for a spot kick being ignored by the officials.
As the first half approached its conclusion in a subdued manner, Alfie Doughty delivered a free kick into the penalty area, where Carlton Morris met it at the far post.
His volley directed back across the goal prompted Chambers to clearly extend his hand to deflect the ball out of play.
However, referee Matt Donohue opted to award a corner instead of a penalty, leaving captain Morris infuriated. So much so that he picked up his fourth yellow card of the season, and now just one booking away from a one-match suspension.
Edwards also felt this was a clear-cut penalty, marking it as the second such incident in Luton’s last two home games, after seeing defender Callum Styles also handled a high ball in the box in Luton’s 1-1 draw with West Brom on Friday night, a corner instead awarded rather than a penalty kick.
Should Luton have been given a penalty for handball by Calum Chambers?

Calum Chambers a very lucky boy there. Looked like a handball every day of the week.

Jacob Brown did however score the only goal of the game, in off the underside of the bar on the 57th minute, to lift Rob Edwards’ Hatters out of the relegation zone. A first win in four.
Edwards said post-match, per Luton Today: “We should have had a penalty. I don’t complain very often, if at all, but that’s two home games in a row I feel we should have had a penalty.
“We didn’t get it, I know it’s difficult to see those things, they happen quickly, but that certainly would have helped us. I’ve seen it back and it was, his hand’s up and he’s knocked it. He would never have done it on purpose but it’s there and Browny (Jacob Brown) is right in front of goal then to just put it in, so yes (It was a spot-kick).”

Steve Sidwell, reporting for Sky Sports, said: “It skids off the surface, it bounces up and it hits Chambers on the arm. The Luton players are going absolutely crazy, Morris has been booked. You’ll see it here, it pops back up, Chambers just gets an arm to it there, they should have a penalty. A corner has gone out to the left hand side but they’re really, really disappointed that they’ve not been awarded a penalty there.”
Mark McGuinness, who threw his arms up in appeal, said: “I think the appeal said it all. There’s been a few occasions like that now, it’s obviously tough for referees and officials to make those decisions, but that’s past and we’ve got the three points now.
“Hopefully that changes (not getting penalties). It’s tough but we can’t do anything about it now. Fortunately we came away with the three points anyway. It’s happened a few times now but it’s impossible to comment after the game on it, it’s been and done.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Luton boss Rob Edwards was left frustrated at being denied ‘stonewall’ penalty with Carlton Morris booked for protesting…
@Paragoric: Ooh it’s a tight call…. FFS it’s stonewall
@copyofamity: Never handball 👀👀👀
@paulh_85: Got away with that one
@CcfcOK1: Nice to get help off the ref for once
@CraigMallett9: We got away with one there 😂
@William40504: Hahahaha pen all day that… 🤣
@I_Hopkins1: fucking hell how have we got away with that ahahahaha
@JonTucker2_: Yellow card for telling the truth is a new one
@mitchfoley: Unbelievable save
@Welsh_Buwch: got away with that tbh
@paigesimsy: Robbed of pen
@Robbo_PS: 2 in 2 games now!
@H87foster: Stone wall penalty
@ThomasAtcheson: Without VAR, the ref can only see what he can see. No penalty. But unless there were specific words used or stuff not shown, the yellow seems wrong
@MaryTibbenham: Without doubt! Definitely swipes the ball off.
@LutonEye: A special shout out to Matt Donohue, the latest in a long line of hopelessly incompetent @FA_PGMOL referees to visit Kenilworth Road this season. Failed to spot Chambers right hooking the ball away from goal, then booked our Captain for daring to question it 🫣
@LTFC_Dave: I’m not advocating VAR but something has got to be done about the standard of officiating. Would have taken 10-15 seconds to see he got the call wrong. Instead our captain (who is allowed to talk to officials btw) gets booked and has to walk a disciplinary tightrope
