Liverpool fans make feelings known with chant and leave on 57th minute of 4-0 defeat to Man City

Liverpool fans make their feelings known with a chant and leave the Etihad on the 57th minute of their side’s 4-0 defeat to Man City.

Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed Liverpool to reach the FA Cup semi-finals, Haaland completing a hat-trick, with Semenyo also on target. Mo Salah also had a penalty saved by James Trafford.

‘Oles’ could be heard by the home fans while the away end started to empty. As the final whistle blew, banners with ‘Wembley again ole ole’ were on display, just to taunt Liverpool even more.

Manchester City assistant manager Pep Lijnders, speaking to TNT Sports: “Pep [Guardiola] is really pleased, that is the most important. It’s not easy to please him. We played a good game. The first 25 minutes we were too open. Then we started to control the game and created more chances. We deserved [the win].”

On what Guardiola said after the game: “He complimented the guys who played the last weeks and didn’t play today. He was really happy because it’s special if you go eight times to Wembley in eight years in a row. It’s finals now. It’s the part of the season where the business has to be done. The boys feel that.”

On Erling Haaland’s hat-trick: “Wow what a goal. Unbelievable. The header for me was insane. I love when a striker flies and attacks the ball and the fans love that as well.”

On returning to Wembley after the Carabao Cup win: “We have to prove it. Probably we will get a difficult opponent again. Wembley is special, I am happy for the fans. These are special days.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot speaking to TNT Sports: “It’s very disappointing to be out [of the FA Cup], not only in the manner but also the result and the score. Another big disappointment for us.”

On what was missing from his side: “What has been missing for large parts of the season, converting our chances into goals. I think it was an even game up until they scored the penalty and the last time we played here we conceded just before half-time and again today.

“We get a penalty and we get a chance but that doesn’t tell me anything. The first 35 minutes was the sort of team I would like to see but the 20 minutes after that, we have to defend so, so much better than we were doing today.

“Not nice to go in at 2-0 just before half-time, not helpful for your mood especially after the season we have had. That was really hard to take. The only good thing was that we didn’t concede more.

On Mo Salah’s penalty miss: “I wouldn’t focus on one player, I would focus on the team and that probably sums up us today but also maybe large parts of the season.

“I think it is the second one he missed and Dominik Szoboszlai also already missed a penalty so it’s not only that we miss big chances, this season we have missed a few penalties. In the first half there was a chance for Mo when we played the fast counter attack.

“Unfortunately that didn’t go in and you have to score goals if you want to have a chance to win the game.”

On the PSG game: “If you want to have a good game on Wednesday, a 4-0 loss is already not helpful but an even bigger loss would be a bigger problem for us to go there.

“I tried to get us back into the game, to make it 4-1 or 4-2 but make sure that it stays at four and that was the main thing I thought about.

“I took Joe Gomez out because he has shown since I am here that it is not always easy to play him for 90 minutes twice so if we want to use him on Wednesday, it is helpful that I took him out today.”

On how important the Champions League is this season: “Very big and very important because it is not every season that you play in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“We are really looking forward to that, playing against a very good side again. We want to qualify for the Champions League next season because there is plenty for us to play for.

“We have had a lot of setbacks and disappointments but that is also part of being a football player and being a human being and you have to stand there when things are not so positive and that’s what it is about now.

“Players that have shown so much quality in the past now have a fantastic chance to show that again against PSG.”

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland speaking to TNT Sports after scoring a hat-trick: “Amazing. In the first half we struggled a bit but we kept going after 30 minutes. Amazing, another Wembley trip for us which is important.

“Between 30 minutes and 60 that is on one of our better performances [of the season].”

On his hat-trick: “It’s been some time since I have done it for City so it is time I have done it again! It is special so I am super happy.”

On his season: “It has been too up and down which has not been good enough. For now it is a long week for us because we are not in the Champions League, which is not good enough, but we have to face Chelsea which is another game.”

On his second goal: “I will tell Antoine [Semenyo] to keep putting those crosses in. He is new and it takes a bit of time to settle but his cross was great and [Nico] O’Reilly’s cross was outstanding.”

On winning the FA Cup: “I have been in an FA Cup final and now we are going to Wembley. This club has to win trophies on the biggest stage.”

Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai speaking to TNT Sports: “I don’t know. When you do something and there is no result for it it makes no sense. We had chances and missed them, we conceded an easy penalty. We lose 4-0. We cannot concede as much as we concede. Nothing else to say.

“It’s hard to win here. After 1-0 down you still believe. At 2-0 down, it’s our own fault to come in at half-time conceding in the last minute another goal. At 2-0 the chances are lower and lower.

“You come out and want to show we are able to come back and you concede a third one, from then on there is no more chance to come back.”

On what was missing: “The fighting spirit wasn’t there enough, the mentality wasn’t there enough. None of us were there to be honest as much as we could.

“It’s a hard time but we have to stick together. On Wednesday there is another chance but we have to get in our head this is not the season we would like to end.”

On why the mentality wasn’t there: “That’s a good question. I don’t know. It’s hard to find words to be honest. We wanted this one so much. You lose 4-0 at City and it’s not the best.”

On trying to bounce back in the Champions League in the last bid for a trophy this season: “We have to forget as much as we can and as soon as we can and just keep on fighting all the time.

“I always say when we do it and we are winning, when we don’t do it we are losing. You have to fight, work hard, be there for each other and that’s what we are missing sometimes.”

Manchester City goalscorer Antoine Semenyo, speaking to TNT Sports: “Feels amazing. The team played really well today. We wanted to continue from the [Carabao Cu[] final and we carried on today.

“We said from the final once we are back we wanted to score goals, defend as a team and we did that perfectly today.”

On scoring and assisting for the third time for Man City: “Everyone has made it easy for me. When I get the ball I try to do my thing and I’m in the right places at the right time.”

On his relationship with Haaland and Cherki: “Now I have been here two months adjusting to their game, Cherki makes it easy for me and Erling is always on the end of everything. My life is easier and I know once I get in the box one of them will be in the box and score.

“It feels like a dream to be honest. I’m so grateful to god and another opportunity to win another trophy. The world is our oyster at the moment and we just need to make sure we win that semi.”

Manchester City defender Marc Guehi speaking to TNT Sports: “It was a good win. The manager always says it is important to arrive at the right time. At the end of the season, there are big games and big moments and we did that today against Liverpool. You come up against big players and a big team so you have to suffer together and go through the game enjoying those moments.

On having belief in his team and particularly Erling Haaland: “Super happy for him. He has worked his hardest for the team and he went through a period when he wasn’t scoring. We have got a chance to win a game up front, we’ve got good players all around the pitch.

Onn not having a number nine playing against him: “We were aware that they could do that and players are trying to pull you out of position. I think for the most part we did well.

On the fact he has played against Liverpool and beat them all five times: “It’s not me! It’s just a coincidence to be honest. You have to enjoy it, it’s not a long career so that’s what I’m trying to do. At Man City it is relentless, having to learn a lot and make mistakes. I have been given the opportunity to do that with an amazing team, amazing manager and the fans have been great as well.”

On working with Pep Guardiola: “He’s exactly how you see him. How he comes across on TV, in interviews, that’s exactly how he is. He just loves football, loves his players and he wants to win.”

On making mistakes: “As long as you are doing the right thing and doing things with the right intention for the team and for yourself then it is OK. As a player you have to make mistakes otherwise you aren’t really trying and risking things. As long as you are learning and improving and it is not happening on a daily basis then it is OK.”

Here’s the social media reaction while Liverpool fans make feelings known with chant and leave on 57th minute of their 4-0 defeat to Man City…

@Jayc_Kop: If this chant starts at Anfield, Arne may as well resign there and then. Sorry no coming back from this, once you lose the fans who travel you are a goner.

@dylslam24: Fans want Xabi back.

@JayyLFC9: @John_W_Henry @Linda_Pizzuti are you guys seeing this?? Fucking sort this shit now!! We have on shit left to save our season and that’s on Wednesday. The tie could be over before the return game.

@HuttonPlays: This is pretty telling as usually the away fans are the more die hard fans

@pennant83: 4-0 down before 60 mins is embarrassing, doesn’t matter who Liverpool are playing. When is enough enough. At what point does big decisions need to be had? How can you watch that, and go next season yeah we are going to be better, when at no point this season have we seen it.

@TheAnfieldTalk: When have you seen our loyal fans leave an away end early? When have you heard boos at Anfield after performances? The club is not listening to the fans. They have every right to not be happy at all, spending their hard earned money week-in week-out to watch the same lack of effort and tactical naivety.
