Lincoln fans aim cheeky chant at Chelsea’s Garnacho and boo him every time he touched the ball

Lincoln fans aim a cheeky chant at Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho and boo him every time he touched the ball in the Carabao Cup tie.

During the first half of the third round match, Garnacho faced relentless jeers from the home crowd every time he touched the ball, along with accusations of diving.

The £40 million signing from Manchester United made his, and was targeted following his controversial exit, where manager Ruben Amorim had urged him to leave after attitude concerns and a poor season.

Lincoln took a surprise 1-0 lead with Rob Street pouncing on through a defensive mix up, while Chelsea, under Enzo Maresca, fielded a rotated squad.

There was an intense hostility toward Garnacho as a test of his mental resilience, he ended up getting subbed off after 59 minutes.

Chelsea eventually turned the scoreline around to win the game 2-1, avoiding a slight scare.

Lincoln head coach Michael Skubala said: “I thought we were so good in the first half. The way the lads applied themselves and pinned Chelsea back is something that not a lot of teams have been able to do.

“We were electric in that opening 45 and worthy of going in at least 1-0 up. We were aggressive with our press and we really worked in the week of how we could hurt them.

“I think there’s a slight feeling of frustration with the opening five minutes of the second half, but at the same time, they showed their quality. When the dust settles, we’ll look back on that performance with immense pride.”

He added: “We had a few moments in the second half where it didn’t quite drop for us, but when you make Chelsea defend their box as we did tonight, you can be really proud.

“Everyone involved put in a shift and there were some massive performances out there. It is an odd feeling, because we felt like we could have got something out of the game, but in the end their quality showed.

“Chelsea came here and showed us respect, they came with a strong team and really had to earn it.”

Rob Street said: “It’s a hard feeling to describe, it was amazing to score, and it is a moment I won’t forget.

“Looking back on the night, we had chances to win the game and that speaks volumes of how well we’ve performed.

“They have quality all over the pitch and to put world-class players under the pressure we did is something we can take great pride from.”

He added: “They came out in the second half and turned it on those five minutes and with the quality they have, it can be hard to prevent it.

“At the end of the day, I think as a team our performance was absolutely top draw.

“We’ll take immense pride from tonight and go again on Saturday, we have another tough game at Peterborough and we’ve got to be ready for that.”

Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca said: ‘We prepared for the game thinking it would be exactly the way it was in the first half. I think in the first half we all struggled a little bit.

‘In the second half I think we were much better. We changed something tactically, but I have to praise the team because it was a very tricky game, away with long-balls, free-kicks, throw-ins coming into the box. The way they defended was outstanding and we won so I’m happy.

‘At half-time we changed something tactically that I think has been important. Jorrel [Hato] was playing in a different position compared to the first half. The structure and the shape of the team between the first half and the second half was completely different and that probably helped a little bit.

‘I think we were also lucky that we scored immediately after half-time.

‘We already gave Ty the trust last year and we have confidence in him. This season again he is playing games – against Fulham, Brentford and Manchester United – and he’s helping us.

‘We needed that because the last week as been a tough week for us in terms of results, but now we need to go again.’

Here’s how Twitter users reacted after Lincoln fans aim a cheeky chant at Chelsea’s Garnacho and boo him every time he touched the ball…

@1967DAM: I’m glad it’s going really well for him 😂😂

@ajgrundy1980: 3 dives in 5 mins. Final one was lucky not to get booked. Ref bought them all. Man Utd laughing. £40m. Not worth 40 quid.

@BardneyBoy: He was going down too easily, trying to fool the ref. The fans sussed that and he brought it on himself. Karma.

@jayy1z: Always loved Lincoln ❤️❤️

@mufcsince1976: Garnacho subbed off v Lincoln – and booed from the minute he got off the team bus – things you love to see! 😂😂

@stuart_humour: Garnacho can’t even do a full match against Lincoln…🤷

@stamfordstu: Lincoln fans with quite an astute critique of Garnacho there…. #LINCHE

@DesireMUFC: Always had a soft spot for Lincoln 😂

@xSamWalker: 😂😂 loving this

@KnackeredStew: No one can respect the way this man went about business
