Rodgers said: “We had a few players that have shown symptoms and signs.

“It would be a shame [if the Watford game were postponed], but the public’s health is the most important in all of this.”

Asked if the game could be played behind closed doors, Rodgers said: “The game is all about the players and the fans and if you have one of those not there, it’s obviously not the same.”

But after appearing to improve, he is said to have returned to a worse state since and now it seems the club’s game will certainly be called off if the results come back positive.

The news puts even greater pressure action to be taken with English football authorities said to be planning on suspended all matches in line with their European counterparts.

As another day passes, it seems inevitable games will be cancelled or postponed once a player case is confirmed but Premier League chiefs are yet to act.

Some Premier League clubs are said to be hopeful the government intervenes today, especially after a plan for the deadly virus was put into the limelight by The Times.

That is to play games behind closed doors, with there being a growing belief among the top flight sides that English football is falling behind the rest of Europe in halting the outbreak.

Many a pundit and manager would rather that the season was put on hold rather than going ahead without fans being allowed to enter.
