Leeds United fans and a journalist tear into The Sun over article which had some odd criticism of manager Marcelo Bielsa.
A number of the Premier League outfit’s supporters have slammed a new story which sees some digs made about Argentine for his use of a translator in press conferences.
During his time in England, the Leeds manager has become well-known for the translators who accompany him whenever he speaks to the press.

A recent article published in The Sun, however, decided that this was somehow upsetting and proceeded to suggest that ‘things really are looking down’ for the club as he ‘still cannot utter a word of English more than three years after arriving’.
Chief football writer at the Yorkshire Evening Post Graham Smyth tweeted disapprovingly about the article, saying: “Marcelo Bielsa speaking through a translator still an issue for some, apparently.
“Of course if he did speak English and struggled to properly explain himself, slightly mispronounced a word or slipped up, they’d not mention it.
“There’d be no gleeful headlines. Oh no.”
As mentioned, Leeds fans tear into The Sun article over odd criticism of Marcelo Bielsa, see what the Whites faithful wrote below…
@philholdgate: Shameful how xenophobia goes unchecked in certain parts of our media 😔
@gerrymc123: He probably speaks perfect English but don’t change Marcelo. It winds up TalkSPORT
@KatieLUFC: Really angers me to my core this. Why aren’t they writing about all the factories that have signs in other languages to make their staff feel comfortable? They are here earning a living speaking their own language too… what’s the difference? The agenda obvs! Leave him alone.🖕🏽🖕🏽
@ForeverAYellow: DON’T BUY THE SUN!
@TheTallerGuy: I’ve never understood why this is an issue. MB doesn’t speak English well enough to get his point across so he uses someone who can relay his thoughts more clearly. The players, the fans and his bosses can all understand him perfectly and that’s all that matters. It’s clear that the fascination with Bielsa and Leeds style of play is wearing off after the whirlwind start to life in the PL. Wanting MB to speak English so they can ridicule or deliberately misunderstand him is just the start. We’ll see more sniping this season, I’m sure
@daverowson: He should just say in English’I am Leeds United I’ll speak in what language I want, Bueno.. now f@@k off!!’ Translator can do the Spanish version 🤣🤣
@rslicker59: English arrogance at its most breathtaking. Xenophobia, racism and bigotry writ large. Absolutely despicable. We’ll never learn.
@brendanstaunton: You’re absolutely right. He may not speak in English, but he’s always interesting. And I always check what he says. That’s because he doesn’t speak a load of predictable rot about taking ‘each game as it comes’ or ‘the lads gave it everything’ or ‘fighting for the shirt.’
@Roly_Joel: The cheek on him. Coming over here and taking our job which we offered him. Shopping in our shops. Assimilating into our culture. Looking after our low paid staff. Choosing not to live in a gated community. Disgusting.
@PaulClough18: Stay as he is, he bores em to tears 🤣
@durnin26: The ONLY people who find this an issue are non Leeds fans @GrahamSmyth. Us lot don’t give a damn what language he speaks. And that’s what matters #LUFC
@MellyMaestro: It’s abundantly clear at this point that Bielsa speaking English isn’t important. Most people who are whinging about his use of a translator aren’t Leeds supporters (and therefore irrelevant) and the few Leeds supporters who do care just want something to complain about.
@86josepharmour: The gammons that speak one language themselves criticising a man who speaks more than one 🙄
@The_Duke_No9: He tried to speak english at the start and was ridiculed
@Mallysis: He can speak English well enough. But he’s a perfectionist and doesn’t want to be misunderstood/misquoted. We’re used to it now and it’s part of our unique experience with him. Seems to annoy just about everyone else though. Likely the green-eyed monster. #lufc
@yorkshireboy14: Are there no rules on this ..??.any way as long as he can get over to the players they need to start winning against Watford today all is well My opinion for what it is worth he should be doing a little better by now he could answer some basic stuff in English with help if needs
@Eggans2: People saying it’s a problem wouldn’t be saying so if we were better off than we are now
@jamie80321486: And what? hes transformed the club top to bottom without speaking English and his brand of attacking football is the envy of many clubs. who is is a problem for? not for anyone associated with Leeds.
@peterjs0007: Who has been ‘complaining’?
@Leedsbarca: Very easy for him to be misquoted as well. Its better for him to use a translator and for him to feel comfortable and confident that the right message is given.
@howard0305: When we’ve lost a few games it’s an issue for the negative folk, but once we win a few it won’t be. They’ll move onto their next target… #MOT #ALAW #LUFV
@Petewoodhead99: Elephant in the room is that they are annoyed he won’t speak English to them because they want him to slip up
@GailGailtranter: Not an issue for me at all.
I mean. It’s not like an older gentleman needed a translator when in a foreign country is it? pic.twitter.com/HZwvN4rdYL

ThisIsFutbol gave their opinion on the rather strange digs at Bielsa, saying: “It would be fair to criticise Bielsa for the form his side have displayed in the early stages of the season – which sees them sit in the relegation zone on the Premier League table.
“However, considering the success Bielsa has had during his time with Leeds – he has led them to Premier League football for the first time since 2004, and then helped them finish ninth in their first season back – it would not make much sense to blame his unwillingness to speak English to the press as a reason for the club’s current struggles.
With such an apparent lack of evidence to back up the relevance of the article’s criticism, it’s no wonder these fans were so upset by the complaint.
