Leeds fans mock Chris Wilder’s interview on Jayden Bogle leaving Sheffield United

Leeds United fans decided to mock Chris Wilder’s interview on Jayden Bogle leaving Sheffield United in favour of a move to the Whites.

It was confirmed on Saturday evening that the 23 year old defender signed a four-year deal with the Blades describing it as a “significant, undisclosed fee”.

The former England Under-20 international spent four years at Bramall Lane and prior that, was at Derby County.

The defender will link-up with the Leeds squad in Germany for their pre-season camp ahead of the 2024/25 season, with the club hoping to win promotion back to the Premier League, having lost the Championship playoff final in May.

Bogle becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer, with Daniel Farke’s side also bringing in defender Joe Rodon and goalkeeper Alex Cairns on permanent deals, while midfielder Joe Rothwell has joined on loan.

SHEFFIELD UNITED STATEMENT:

Jayden Bogle has departed Bramall Lane after a significant, undisclosed fee was agreed with Leeds United.

The 23-year-old, who has entered the final year of his current contract, stated that he did not want to sign a new deal at S2 and has subsequently moved to Elland Road.

Signed by Chris Wilder in September 2020 from Derby County, the wing-back scored 12 goals in 103 appearances in all competitions across his four seasons as a Blade. He was part of the promotion-winning squad of 2022-23 and netted five times in 50 top-flight outings in red and white, the last of which came at Old Trafford in April.

Boss Wilder commented: “He made it clear to me this week that he saw his future elsewhere and when that happens, I think the best thing is to get the best price possible for our football club. It is disappointing to lose him but we move on. He ran his contract down and that’s difficult.”

Thanks for your efforts, Jayden.

LEEDS STATEMENT:

Leeds United are delighted to announce the signing of Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old full-back has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Elland Road, committing his future with the Whites until the summer of 2028.

Having spent time with Reading, Swindon Town and Derby County’s academies throughout his youth career, Jayden would make his professional debut for the Rams in a Carabao Cup clash with Oldham Athletic at the start of the 2018/19 season.

That campaign would prove to be a breakout year for the attack-minded defender, where he would go on to make 40 Sky Bet Championship appearances, scoring twice and setting up nine goals for his teammates.

Bogle would enjoy another impressive season at Pride Park the year after, before moving to then Premier League side Sheffield United in 2020.

A maiden top-flight outing came in a 1-1 draw for the Blades away against Brighton & Hove Albion, with the full-back netting on the South Coast to put his side into the lead.

Bogle was instrumental in the Blades’ promotion back to the top-flight in 2022/23, before making 36 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring three goals along the way.

On the international front, Jayden has represented England at Under-20s level, helping the Young Lions to a 4-0 victory over Guatemala on debut in 2019.

Everyone at Leeds United would like to welcome Jayden to the club, who is the fourth arrival of the summer transfer window.

He will now join up with Daniel Farke and the rest of the squad on their pre-season training camp in Germany.

WILDER’S INTERVIEW IN FULL:

Wilder said to Football Heaven: “Yeah, he certainly has [played his last game for Sheffield United]. So, yeah, that was a disappointing one to lose. But we move on.

“You know, he ran his contract down. So this is a difficult part of it. What clubs position that clubs get put into. So, you know, absolutely 100% in an ideal world, we don’t want players to run their contracts down.

“But I can’t force him. I can’t put a gun to his head. I can’t put a gun to his head and put a pen in his hand to sign a contract for Sheffield United.

“He made it clear this week to me that he saw his future elsewhere. He saw his future at Leeds United. And then I think the best thing is when players do that, is trying to get the best price possible for the football club.

“I brought Jayden in. I think one of the best deals that we did with him and him and Max Lowe at the time, I think it was about under about three or 4 million for both of them. At the time Jayden leaves, he’s played in the Premier League. He’s played in a promotion winning team as well.

“So hopefully Sheffield United fans won’t leave a little bit on him and remember him in a poor light because he’s done well for us and he’s somebody we enjoyed coaching and working with. I thought, as I said in the press many a time last year, I thought he was an outstanding player for us.

“We’d have loved to have been in a position to negotiate and try and sign along the contract, but when he doesn’t, we have to make decisions and when he wants to go and play up the road, then it’s all about getting that best price and I think we’ve got a reasonable price for him.”

Interviewer: “So that was going to be one of the questions. Happy with the money that you’ve got for him? And B, will you be able to reinvest that money in the replacement elsewhere in the team?”

Wilder: “You know, we’re looking and we’ll keep looking in terms of replacing players. So, and however we do that, whether it’s loans fees or small fees, you know, that was a remit at the start of the season to me back in the last year, you know, in terms of how we need to go about it and what we need to do and, you know, we feel, you know, small fee.

“Well, swappish Kieffer for Jabbo. I think that’s a good bit of business. Callum O’Hare today, I think, just showed him glimpses for 15-20 minutes, what he’s going to be about and he’s been fabulous to have around the place and he’s definitely going to be a fan’s favourite. Sam McCallum, first impressions on a three. You know, really good as well. Jamie Shackleton last week and right the way through pre season so far has been. Has been that player that we thought he was and will be for us as well.

“So, yeah, freeze loans. We still got the loan market to work in and if it is small fees, then we’ll look and see what we can get to attract players here.”

Interviewer: “Any further potential business this week? Either in or out?”

Wilder: “Yes. Yeah, there has to be. So we understand that at a zoom with the board yesterday and they understand the situation that we’re in. So I’d like to think there will be movement.

“No bids for any of our players. So the ones that possibly will be nervous about, there hasn’t been and there hasn’t been any bids for any of the other players and their attitude of everybody has been absolutely top draw.

“So working with a real positive group, enjoying working with them and hopefully adding to them in another busy, another busy week for everybody.”

Interviewer: “Have you had any further updates from above in terms of takeover progress, Chris?”

Wilder: “No, I’ve just got my head down and worked with a group. So that will happen or not happen without me. Hopefully not without me being involved. I hope not anyway. But, you know, I don’t know too much about where that’s at the moment.”

Interviewer: “And just finally, in terms of those conversations with the board, in terms of incomings, are you reasonably happy at the minute with the answers that you’ve got in terms of what you’ll be able to do with your squad this summer, with or without the takeover?”

Wilder: “We need to bring good players in. You know, you know, we. We made a statement at the end of the season. We needed to change things. We needed to bring players in. And so far, the players that we brought in were delighted to bring in and sure everybody will do whatever they can to helping construct and build a team that we all want to watch, first and foremost, myself included. We all want to get behind and we all want to be proud of. So that doesn’t change.”
