In this article, we look at the League One ups, downs and playoffs with it all confirmed on what is a tense final day of 2021/22 season.
Going to the 12:30pm kick offs, that the title, automatic promotion, playoff places and three relegation positions needed to be filled.
A point or more for Wigan at Shrewsbury would guarantee promotion and the title while Rotherham will earn promotion with a win at Gillingham – dropped points would open door for MK Dons, who travel to Plymouth.
All three are guaranteed play-off spot at least, with Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Plymouth and Wycombe fighting for other three spots.
Crewe already relegated, Doncaster & Wimbledon effectively down – final spot between Gillingham, Fleetwood and Morecambe.
HOW THE DAY PLAYED OUT:
GOAL: Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Portsmouth
George Hirst (4 mins)
First goal of the day and it could be a big one! George Hirst, son of Wednesday legend David and a former Owls player himself, gives Portsmouth the lead! Nice move from Pompey and Ronan Curtis slips it back for Hirst to tap in.
GOAL: Morecambe 0-1 Sunderland
Nathan Broadhead (10 mins)
Sunderland take the lead against the run of play. After a good opening 10 minutes or so for Morecambe, it’s Nathan Broadhead who finds the net for the Black Cats. He coolly places the ball home via a low shot from outside the box. The race to the League One play-offs continues.
Bolton 0-1 Fleetwood
Barry Baggley (17 mins)
Barry Baggley picks up the ball on the right flank, plays the ball around his marker and works back onto it before dinking the ball over a crowded box and into the back of the net.
If it stays like this, Fleetwood will be safe.
GOAL: Plymouth 0-1 MK Dons
Scott Twine (17 mins)
It had been coming!
League One player of the year Scott Twine curls home a beauty of a free-kick from 20 yards out.
MK Dons going up automatically as it stands!
GOAL: Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Portsmouth
Lee Gregory (18 mins)
Sheffield Wednesday level through the in-form Lee Gregory.
He taps home from Marvin Johnson’s low cross to send the vast majority of the capacity crowd at Hillsborough into raptures.
That boosts Wednesday’s play-off hopes.
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 0-1 Accrington
Jay Rich-Baghuelou (18 mins)
Jay Rich-Baghuelou sends Accrington into an early lead against AFC Wimbledon.
He smashes the ball home past keeper Nikola Tzanev.
This goal, in addition to Fleetwood’s goal at Bolton, means Wimbledon are going down as it stands.
GOAL: Oxford 1-0 Doncaster
Billy Bodin (23 mins)
Doncaster needed potentially the most unlikely series of results in football history in order to stay up and, well, they’re losing.
Billy Bodin gives the Yellows the lead.
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 0-2 Accrington
Colby Bishop (35 mins)
Whatever slim hopes AFC Wimbledon had rested on results elsewhere going in their favour at the very least, and now their chances look all but impossible.
Accrington get their second of the afternoon, this time courtesy of Colby Bishop who finds the net from close range.
The Dons are definitely down, in all likelihood.
GOAL: Gillingham 0-1 Rotherham
Rarmani Edmonds-Green (34 mins)
The Millers lead and they’re back up to second!
It’s not a thing of beauty but Rotherham fans wont care one jot.
Rarmani Edmonds-Green pokes home from close range.
GOAL: Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Portsmouth
Saido Berahino (36 mins)
The home side complete the turnaround!
Former West Brom and Stoke striker Saido Berahino bags his eighth league goal of the season and Wednesday’s play-off prospects are looking good.
GOAL: Bolton 1-1 Fleetwood
Dion Charles (37 mins)
Well this has just made the race for survival in League One a bit more interesting.
Dion Charles levels it up for Bolton against Fleetwood with a shot from inside the box.
That means Fleetwood, as it stands, drop to 20th and are just above the drop zone as it stands.
GOAL: Plymouth 0-2 MK Dons
Scott Twine (41 mins)
That man again!
League One’s player of the season Scott Twine has his second.
It wont be enough to see MK Dons go up automatically as it stands but they’re doing their side of the bargain.
Plymouth’s play-off hopes looking slimmer and slimmer.
GOAL: Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Portsmouth
Jordan Storey (40 mins)
Sheffield Wednesday, who had trailed 1-0, are now 3-1 up as Jordan Storey deflects a powerful low cross in.
GOAL: Plymouth 0-3 MK Dons
Harry Darling (44 mins)
What a performance this is from MK Dons!
GOAL: Shrewsbury 0-1 Wigan
Max Power (43 mins)
Well well well. This hots things up at the top on the verge of half-time!
GOAL: Burton 0-1 Wycombe
Sam Vokes (43 mins)
The Chairboys have the breakthrough!
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 0-3 Accrington
Michael Nottingham (45 mins)
How things look in League One as they stand
– Wigan lead Shrewsbury meaning they will be promoted and win the League One title; Rotherham’s lead at Gillingham means they will take second place by a point while also relegating the Gills
– MK Dons are coasting 3-0 against 10-man Plymouth – who will miss out on a play-off place – but that’s still not enough to overhaul Rotherham into second right now
– Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Wycombe occupy the three other play-off spots
– Doncaster and AFC Wimbledon down along with the Gills as it stands; Morecambe and Fleetwood stay up
GOAL: Shrewsbury 0-2 Wigan
Will Keane (50 mins)
Advantage Wigan!
They’ve been out of form of late, but they’ve comfortably edged ahead today.
Will Keane makes no mistake from the spot.
GOAL: Bolton 2-1 Fleetwood
Declan John (53 mins)
A cracking Bolton goal.
Declan John picks up possession just outside the corner of the Bolton box and he cuts inside and curls home.
Fleetwood are not going down as it stands, but they’ll be looking over their shoulders at Gillingham.
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 1-3 Accrington
Ayoub Assal (57 mins)
A consolation goal for Wimbledon who regain a bit of glory in the midst of what’s been a pretty miserable afternoon.
Ayoub Assal has an easy task to turn in at the far post. That’s his 10th goal of the season.
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 2-3 Accrington
Jack Rudoni (58 mins)
Two goals in two minutes for AFC Wimbledon!
Maybe they aren’t going down without a fight.
GOAL: Plymouth 0-4 MK Dons
Scott Twine (58 mins)
Hat-trick!
Scott Twine has his second hat-trick of the season with a cute finish from David Kasumu’s cutback.
Looks like it’s to be the play-offs for MK Dons and I would not want to be in the opposition with them in this form.
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 2-4 Accrington
John O’Sullivan (63 mins)
Three goals in 10 minutes!
But AFC Wimbledon are on the other end of another Accrington attack that results in goal.
John O’Sullivan bags Stanley’s fourth of the afternoon against the relegation-in-waiting Dons.
GOAL: AFC Wimbledon 3-4 Accrington
Jack Rudoni (66 mins)
GOAL: Shrewsbury 0-3 Wigan
Will Keane (65 mins)
GOAL: Oxford 1-1 Doncaster
Josh Martin (67 mins)
Doncaster going down but they at least have a leveller here.
Josh Martin’s long range shot takes a deflection and finds its way in.
GOAL: Burton 1-1 Wycombe
Gassan Ahadme (72 mins)
Burton level through substitute Gassan Ahadme, Wycombe will still be in the play-offs as it stands.
Bolton 2-2 Fleetwood
Joe Garner (79 mins)
And there comes the equaliser!
Joe Garner scores his third goal in three games as Fleetwood draw level.
That might just have kept them in the division as Gillingham will now need to score twice at the very least against Rotherham.
GOAL: Plymouth 0-5 MK Dons
Scott Twine (77 mins)
Just the four goals today then for League One’s player of the season.
Scott Twine scores his fourth goal of the day and 10-man Plymouth just want the full-time whistle to go now.
He smashes home a super finish from 20 yards out and it’s very hard to see him being in League One next season.
Liam Manning subs him off straight afterwards so his genuine hopes of a double hat-trick are brought to an end.
He’s been superb today.
GOAL: Bolton 3-2 Fleetwood
Dion Charles (86 mins)
Dion Charles gets his second goal for Bolton this afternoon.
It comes in the most bizarre of circumstances as he slides in just past halfway to win the ball back in tackle and, somehow, the ball richochets and sails into the Fleetwood net from quite some distance.
That goal means just a goal for Gillingham against Rotherham will keep them in the division.
GOAL: Burton 1-2 Wycombe
Jordan Obita (86 mins)
That’ll be that for Wycombe. The playoffs await.
GOAL: Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 Portsmouth
George Byers (86 mins)
That’ll be that for Sheffield Wednesday. The playoffs await.
GOAL: Gillingham 0-2 Rotherham
Georgie Kelly (89 mins)
Rotherham are going up!
A debut goal for Irishman Georgie Kelly!
The home side are going down.
GOAL: Bolton 4-2 Fleetwood
Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (90+5 mins)
