League One Playoff Final tie confirmed as second club book place at Wembley

This evening saw the first team to advance through to the Championship Playoff Final confirmed as Charlton came out victorious against Doncaster on penalties.

The first leg at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday ended 2-1 for Lee Bowyer’s men, so their opposition had work if they wanted to secure a place at Wembley.

The second leg started, well with goals actually after it took just two minutes for Charlton’s Krystian Bielik to find the net with a header from a free-kick. Now 3-1 on aggregate.

Despite the Addicks being really into the game with plenty of energy, Doncaster scored with a goal (3-2 agg) that came out of nowhere when Tommy Rowe shot from distance into the bottom left-hand corner.

Prior to the whistle blowing for the end of the first half, Lyle Taylor had a penalty turned down after going down from a challenge from Donny’s Andy Butler, his side finishing on top.

That man Butler received a yellow just over half way through the second part of the match for a foul on Charlton keeper Dillon Phillips.

If anyone was going to score next, it would be Doncaster and they only went and got it with three minutes of the 90 remaining, with the aggregate score at 3-3 and looking likely to be going to extra time.

Again Butler’s name being mentioned this second half, heading home from a corner to cause scenes in the away end.

Extra time quickly saw Taylor’s dangerous, deep cross is punched away as Charlton now try to get back in front on the aggregate score.

Another penalty appeal for Charlton was turned away when Donny’s John Marquis had his arm stuck out with the ball clearly hitting it.

Straight after that Marquis completed the comeback for the away side, 3-1 on the night and 4-3 ahead on aggregate.

However, instantly Charlton’s Darren Pratley capitalised on Doncaster keeper Marko Marosi’s slip and fumble to make the aggregate score level.

The tie had to go to a penalty shootout to settle the score and find out who would play Sunderland in the League One playoff final at Wembley on Sunday 26th of May.
