League One in Numbers

League One in Numbers returns with all 12 matches from 20–21 October 2026. Oxford United recorded the most shots, Leicester put more attempts on target than anyone else, and Leyton Orient ended the round with a defeat despite sitting near the top of both lists.

The contrasts run beyond the busiest attacks. Blackpool beat MK Dons with fewer attempts, Mansfield won 3–0 after matching Wimbledon’s shot count, and Stockport paired another victory with the strongest five-game points return in the division.

Compare every club below across shots, attempts on target, possession, shot accuracy and expected goals, then check the complete results and last-five form table. Each match-stat ranking covers one completed league game per club. This edition uses data retrieved on 22 October 2026; the results cover 20–21 October.

24 shots: Oxford lead, but Orient leave empty-handed

Oxford’s 24 attempts brought a 2–1 home win over Wigan. Seven were on target, while Wigan registered seven attempts in total and put one on target. The result leaves Oxford eighth on 18 points in the saved post-match table, with three wins and two draws from their last five league fixtures.

Luton and Leyton Orient were next with 23 shots each, but their evenings ended differently. Luton beat Barnsley 2–1; Orient lost 1–0 at Reading. Stockport and Notts County both won 2–0 after recording 19 attempts. At the other end of the ranking, Doncaster managed four in their home defeat by Stockport. A high shot count describes activity; it does not, by itself, tell us how good the chances were.

Nine on target: Leicester turn their chances into a big win

Leicester’s nine attempts on target were the highest return of the round, and they scored four without reply at Bromley. Leyton Orient followed with eight on target at Reading but no goal. Oxford and Stevenage each registered seven, with Stevenage beating Plymouth 3–0.

Sheffield Wednesday finished without an attempt on target in their 2–0 defeat at Notts County. Plymouth, Wigan and Doncaster each recorded one. Those figures make useful companions to the scores, but they cannot establish who deserved to win or how difficult each goalkeeper’s work was. For Cambridge, six attempts on target produced two goals in the 2–2 draw with Wycombe; Wycombe scored twice from their two on-target attempts.

75% possession: Leicester’s biggest share of the ball

Leicester had 75% possession in their 4–0 away win. Stockport were next on 67% at Doncaster, followed by Oxford on 62% against Wigan. All three combined a higher possession share with victory, although the figures alone do not explain the way those matches were played.

There were reminders elsewhere that possession and points are different measures. Peterborough had 56% of the ball at Huddersfield and lost 4–1. Orient’s 60% brought no points at Reading, while Blackpool beat MK Dons 2–0 with 48%. Mansfield won 3–0 at Wimbledon with 47%. The table lets supporters compare the recorded shares without turning them into claims about territory, control or chance quality.

Shot accuracy: Leicester and Blackpool set the pace

Leicester put nine of their 16 attempts on target: 56.3% when rounded to one decimal place. Blackpool were close behind with five from nine, or 55.6%. Cambridge and Bromley both reached 50%, even though Cambridge drew 2–2 and Bromley lost 4–0.

This is shot accuracy, rather than scoring conversion. It measures the share of attempts that were on target, not the share that became goals. Mansfield and Wimbledon both took 13 shots, but Mansfield put six on target to Wimbledon’s two and won 3–0. Plymouth put one of 14 on target, while Wednesday’s six attempts produced none. The exact fractions determine the ordering; the displayed percentages are rounded.

Expected goals: Stockport record the largest total

Stockport’s 3.38 expected goals was the highest total in the saved match data, alongside 0.22 for Doncaster. The score was 2–0 to Stockport. Orient recorded the second-largest xG total, 2.85, in their 1–0 defeat at Reading, whose figure was 1.49. Huddersfield followed with 2.59 in their 4–1 win over Peterborough.

Expected goals is a model-based assessment of recorded chances. It is useful alongside the score and shot totals, rather than as a replacement result. Notts County recorded 2.41 against Wednesday’s 0.30 in their 2–0 win. Blackpool’s 0.75 was below MK Dons’ 0.96 despite Blackpool winning 2–0. These are individual-match values from the same provider; they are not league points or a forecast.
