Laura Woods in tears as callers give heartfelt goodbyes on her final talkSPORT show

Laura Woods was in tears as callers give their heartfelt goodbyes on what was her final talkSPORT breakfast show as she moves on.

Woodsy has said farewell as host of the much loved show after three years of engaging with listeners.

The 35-year-old is expected to link up with TNT Sports from the 2023/24 season and is giving up her current commitments with the radio station to do so.

One listener paid a touching tribute by reading out a poem especially for her.

82 year old Ivor, said: “I don’t want to waste too much of your time on your final day, just a few words of appreciation and then one verse of rhyme, if that’s OK.

“We all know you have the face for TV, but you certainly have the voice for radio so just a few words of thanks for your efforts on talkSPORT these last few years.

“Your bubbly personality shines through every early morning that you broadcast, being never afraid to offer an opinion, but always respectful and professional of other opinion.

“You have a knack of interacting with your co-presenters in a humorous way without detracting from the topic discussed.

“In thanks to you for getting each day off to a cheerful but informative start. I sincerely wish you all the best wherever your career takes you in the future, now the verse.

“Mr Brazil is good, Ray Parlour not bad, super Ally is great, Gabby’s Jack the Lad.

“But one presenter shines above the rest, that’s Laura Woods who’s simply the best.”

Ally McCoist clapped and added: “Ivor I’m just about weeping uncontrollably myself in the studio, honestly that was fantastic mate.”

He replied: “It’s not bad for a young 82-year-old Manchester United fan is it?”

Woods then concluded: “Ivor I have to admit you’ve broken me early, I’m already crying and it’s only 6:23.”

Ally McCoist also paid tribute to her, saying: “Woodsy it’s been an absolute blast.

“I’m just looking at some tweets, texts and messages coming in from listeners and it just sums it up, everybody loves you to bits, I love you.

“I’ve had an incredible three-year working relationship with you, and honest to God, never had a crossed word which is absolutely unbelievable with sometimes the way I behave.

“We’ve never had a crossed word at all, we’ve always got on really, really well, I cannot tell you how much I’ve enjoyed working with you.

“You’ve been an absolute breath of fresh air and particularly 6am to 6:15, I don’t mind telling you. I’ve enjoyed that madness like you’ve got no idea.

“I said to you, we’ll always talk and you’re an absolute star and you’re going on hopefully to do other things that you want to do, which is the most important thing.

“In all seriousness, look through that window, everybody, all those heads are there to say thank you, they love you and Gabby [Agbonlahor] and I love you and we wish you the very, very best going forward.”

She said: “Thank you everyone. I’ve done all the speeches and stuff, so I’ll try not to bore you as I know lots of you just want to know what’s going on in sport like where Declan Rice is going.

“There’s just a final couple of things I wanted to say. Whoever gets this job next, whoever has the pleasure of sitting in this chair, I don’t think I realised until I got it the impact you can have on people’s lives.

“That’s been the biggest thing I’ve learnt, the power of this station and this chair and the people you get to work with.

“This job is the best thing you will experience. The people you get to speak to, everywhere you go, this station is just a cut through.

“You don’t realise how many people listen to it. I’ve said it before, it is the biggest honour of my life. If I could stay in this job forever I would and I said here today and went through a billion emotions thinking can I do a Wolf of Wall Street? ‘I’m not leaving!’ But I couldn’t do it.

“I have to for now, but I genuinely want to come back. I’ll always have a special place for this station in my heart.

“I don’t see it as goodbye forever, but goodbye for now. I cannot say thank you enough, I really wasn’t sure I’d be right for this role. I didn’t think I had the minerals, I didn’t think I could follow Alan Brazil.

“I couldn’t have done it without this constant interaction with fans. Good or bad, it is constant company.

“It has been the most wonderful period of my life. I do not expect I will ever replace it, so thank you to you guys. You know what you mean to me, you all do behind the glass.

“You’ve made my time here special. Thank you for having faith to put me in this role.

“Our listeners, first and foremost, the first thing I wake up to and the thing I will miss the most. Thank you.

“It’s not goodbye forever. I’m so glad I got through that without blubbing. I was like ‘I’ve got to stop crying’, I think I’ve done it at various points throughout the show so much that I’m okay now.

“I’m excited and I’ll be back very soon.”
