Latest team to win the Checkatrade Trophy confirmed

Portsmouth have been crowned the winners of the 2018/19 Checkatrade Trophy after beating Sunderland 5-4 on penalties after being 2-2 after extra time at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.

Aiden McGeady put the Black Cats ahead minutes prior to half time with a free kick, which was deflected in off the wall and went past Pompey keeper Craig MacGillivray.

Despite dominating much of the first half, Sunderland were the weaker side in the second, Pompey’s Brett Pitman hit the post before Nathan Thompson headed home an equaliser with eight minutes left on the clock.

Both teams were going for it in extra time and it was the 114th minute when Jamal Lowe brought down a long pass from Matthew Clarke and score with a delightful lob over McLaughlin to give Pompey the lead.

Celebrations were short lived and the jubilant scenes switched ends of the stadium as Aiden McGeady got his and Sunderland’s second of the game to take it to penalties.
