‘Kicking off in the away end’ – Leicester fans clash during 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United

‘Kicking off in the away end’ – Leicester fans clash with each other during a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United on New Year’s Day.

There were chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ from the Leicester fans, with their side falling behind, then security, stewards and police tried to control the tensions that boiled over.

It’s back-to-back wins for the Blades, who climb to 15th in the Championship table, with Japhet Tanganga heading in his first goal for the Blades, then ex-Leicester striker Tom Cannon added a second shortly after the break. Callum O’Hare made it 3-0 late on, with Jordan James netting a consolation for the Foxes in stoppage time.

That made it back-to-back wins for the Blades, who climb to 15th in the table with 32 points from 25 games, moving further away from the relegation zone.

The result put more pressure on Leicester boss Marti Cifuentes, a third defeat in four games, leaving them 13th with 24 points from 25 games played, 6 points from the playoff places and 10 above the drop.

Leicester boss Marti Cifuentes told BBC Radio Leicester:

“We were playing against a team that showed more capacity to win duels all over the pitch from minute one to 90. They definitely managed to get more momentum on the ball than we did.

“The three goals are individual mistakes that cost us. It’s not a good performance – you don’t need to concede two goals to show up.

“There are certain things I can share with the fans and some things I cannot. What I can say to the fans is I’m sorry that we’re in this difficult moment.

“We need to stick together. After the game, I understand that they want to show their frustration – it’s completely fair.”

Cifuentes, per Sky Sports:

“There are certain things that I can share with the fans, and some things I cannot. What I can say to the fans is that I’m sorry that we’re in this difficult moment. We need to stick together.

“After the game, I understand that they want to show their frustration. For us, it’s difficult during the game that there is that atmosphere. I understand the frustration, it’s completely fair.

“It was disappointing as we wanted to start the New Year well. What happened today is that we played against a team that showed more capacity to win duels. They definitely managed to get more momentum. The three goals are individual mistakes that cost us. It’s a good performance. You don’t need to concede two goals to show up.”

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“It was a really dominant performance, against a top group of players, to play like we did from the off and right the way through.

“Our centre-forwards and wide players caused them problems all evening and we created some really good chances. I am a touch disappointed for the boys – Michael (Cooper) deserved a clean sheet and their goal took a deflection late on.

“We wrapped the two wingers up, we wrapped the centre-forward up. Jordan James, I think is one of the best midfield players in the division but Dji (Soumare) and Jai (Riedewald) controlled that area against him and (Oliver) Skipp.

“I was looking a lot to my left first half and a lot to my right second half, which shows you the level of performance we produced.”

Wilder, per Sky Sports:

“We were outstanding form the off. Intensity levels, we competed. They have arguably the best players and the strongest squad in the division but we didn’t allow them to get anything on us. Out of possession and in possession, I’m delighted with the boys.

“We looked at signing Bamford when we took over the group, we lost a lot of characters over the summer – some big players off the pitch as well as on it. To bring in Pat to the group – and Jairo has done outstandingly well, plus Ben Mee and Danny Ings – you need those guys to challenge each other.

“He’s a complete No 9, he’s enjoying his time here. I’d like to keep him. I’m banging on about it to above. He’s found a place where he can enjoy his football and he’s contributed to seven wins out of 10.

“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves at all. That’s key. There’s a lot of work being put into the group. We’re getting there and slowly but surely, there are little reminders that if you don’t play with hat intensity and drive, you get hurt in this division. I’ve just said to the players, there’s no point turning up against Stoke or tonight in front of the cameras if we don’t turn up against Oxford.”

Social media users reacted after Leicester fans clash during a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United…

@lordwoodward: Usually started by those the think the club are infallible and haven’t got the intelligence to think others might not agree.

@SA_1884: Let me guess, King Power FC mongs defending how the club is ran into the ground by some fans who have standards. Club is done for with these muppets

@ANT_LCFC: Blue on blue is becoming almost every week now 😂😂😂 #LCFC

@lee1978lcfc: More fight in the stands than on the pitch 👊 #lcfc 💙🦊

@TFWhistle__: No fight on the pitch though👍🏻 #lcfc #leicestercity

@ben_jamin_jacob: Leicester city fans are so entitled. No support whatsoever. 2-0 down and signing ‘this is Embarrassing’ they have no idea what embarrassing is.

@Elm_665: 😂😂😂😂😂 2-0 down, no shots on target and playing that bad… with players that don’t give a shit and we’re called entitled 😂😂😂

@jonathan_lcfc: Football fans were calling us Leicester city fans “entitled” and “spoilt” last season. We weren’t. We could see this coming. It’s been coming for years. And we know it will get worse. #lcfc

@Ashleypp1986: Just because we have had unbelievable highs like winning the PL,FA Cup,European nights etc.. in years gone by doesn’t mean we have to accept the shit being served up today! We have turned into a pathetic shitshow of a club and the fans deserve better! Biggest wage bill in the championship! Players who couldn’t give a shit about the club! Training ground which is more like a holiday camp! Get smashed every other week! An owner who doesn’t give a shit and A clueless recruitment team! Yet, the fans are the entitled ones!! #LCFC

@A1884M: The LCFC civil war has nowhere near peaked yet. A bit of communication from upstairs would calm things down a bit, but it seems to suit them better to let fans turn on each other. A depressing state of affairs.

@mnorman1985: Problem is we’re not only losing games, we’re woefully losing games. Pretty much every defeat this season they’ve embarrassed themselves. And yet there were still some #lcfc fans in the away end tonight that were clapping. How low must the standards get before they stop clapping? Thing is we were chanting “sacked in the morning” towards Marti, but I don’t think he will be sacked. Don’t think the club can afford to sack him. What I did notice at full time was that the majority of the players were reluctant to come over to us fans. They were coming over, made it to between the halfway line & edge of the penalty area, then started to walk of towards the tunnel.
