Josh Ginnelly wows with absolute screamer in Swansea’s Carabao Cup win over Northampton

Josh Ginnelly wows fans with an absolute screamer from 30 yards out in Swansea’s Carabao Cup win over Northampton Town in midweek.

The former Hearts man scored a sensational solo goal in the Welsh outfit’s 3-0 win over the Cobblers in the first round on Tuesday night.

Footage of his goal of the season contender was published online ad as you could expect, it quickly did the rounds…

Joel Piroe’s double and that lovely Josh Ginnelly finish saw off the League One opponents to advance through to he next round.

It was on the 10th minute that Piroe scored from close range with his 45th goal in Swans colours.

Northampton’s keeper Thompson was called into action not too long after to push away a low driven effort from Grimes.

On the verge of half time, Cullen got himself into a brilliant position in front of goal but his effort hits the side netting.

The second half started with Cooper getting the ball beyond the keeper but lost his balance and couldn’t re-adjust in time to tap the ball into the empty net and it rolled agonisingly wide.

Swansea did managed to extend their lead, Piroe scrambling the ball over the line on 53 minutes.

Northampton had their chances t get back into the game, but were outclassed by their Championship hosts with Ginnelly proving too much to handle.

Swansea City: Carl Rushworth; Harry Darling, Kyle Naughton (Mykola Kuharevich 82’), Nathan Wood; Azeem Abdulai, Joe Allen (Jay Fulton 61’), Matt Grimes (captain) (Jamie Paterson 61’), Ollie Cooper, Harrison Ashby (Josh Key 61’); Liam Cullen, Joel Piroe (Josh Ginnelly 61’).

Unused substitutes: Andy Fisher, Jerry Yates, Brandon Cooper, Filip Lissah.

Northampton Town: Max Thompson, Aaron McGowan, Sam Sherring (Akin Odimayo 63’), Louie Appere, Mitch Pinnock (Jack Sowerby 63’), Manny Monthe, Ali Koiki (Patrick Brough 63’), Kieron Bowie (Sam Hoskins 63’), Marc Leonard (Peter Abimbola 72’), Will Hondermarck, Max Dyche.

Unused substitutes: James Dadge, Jacob Scott.

“It was a professional performance, which is what we asked for,” said Swans boss Michael Duff.

“I am a firm believer that footballers should not have to get up for games, it should just be a reaction to what they do every day.

“I thought we were disciplined, I thought we competed really well, and we ran hard.

“Ultimately that gives you the glue to hold a performance together, and then you can show your superiority with some of the football and the chances we created.

“But you have got to do that first bit first, if you don’t do that you have got no chance, no matter how good you are.

“There were lots of positives within the performance, they are a big side, we knew they would be a threat at set plays, but I thought we kept them at arm’s length, really well and that was another positive.

“We cut them open numerous times, the first goal comes from a long ball, and we want to have that mix in our game so that teams cannot come on a full court press all the time because we can offer that threat in behind.

“There was some really good football within the performance.”

Ginnelly said the extra work he put in on the training pitch to ensure he can make the impact he wants to in SA1.

“It’s done a lot for my confidence because it’s been tough since I got here with the injury,” he said as per the club website.

“I’m still a few weeks behind the boys and I can feel that in training, but it was good to get out there for my debut and to get a goal as well.

“I’ve got to get up to speed as quickly as I can and it’s a different challenge for me because I’ve come in and got injured on day one. It’s been a bit of an uphill battle, but I’ve just got to keep working and hopefully get more moments like this.

“I’m doing extra in training trying to get my touch back, it’s quite tough but I’ve just got to keep going.

“When you come to a new club, you want to put a marker down but I haven’t been able to do that.”

Despite the challenges, Ginnelly feels he’s settled in well with his new team-mates.

“It’s been good, it’s a different changing room,” he added.

“The boys are brilliant, they’re all good players and good people so we’re heading in the right direction.”

Jon Brady praised the strength of the opposition as he reflected on Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat away to a very strong Swansea City side.

“We were playing a high level Championship side who only made four changes from the weekend and we had to make seven as we work to get players fit,” he said.

“We had a couple of chances in the first half but they are a really strong side and it was a tough night for us at times, coming up against such a good side.

“We had our moments, the changes we had to make and the stage we are at only made things more difficult but we got minutes in to some players and we are working through that at the moment.

“We had twelve of our eighteen aged 24 or under and that is really positive and encouraging. We had a number of former academy players involved and they will have benefitted from this type of game tonight.

“We are seeing patterns of play form and that was good against a side who are very good out of possession and it was good to test ourselves but there is lots to work on and sharpen up on.

“I thought Max Thompson did well and looked very assured. He can be pleased with his performance on his debut.

“We move on to Saturday now, we had some players get through some minutes tonight and that was important. We’ll settle down and see how we are for the game this weekend.”
