Jim White slammed by fans for stating FA Cup replays should be scrapped

Jim White has been getting slammed by the fans of lower league clubs for stating FA Cup replays should be scrapped.

Shock horror. Once again the attention is focused firmly on those of the packed schedule for Premier League teams, yet there is no thought or mention on the extra income of these cup replays come vital for EFL and non league sides.

He said: “I was watching Wolves against Manchester United on Saturday night, a lackluster bore draw, which now goes to a replay, but who would have argued about that game going to straight penalties.”

Danny Murphy: “Nobody.”

White continues: “Surely that would have been the best solution for everybody concerned?

“The replay is scheduled for a week tomorrow, next Tuesday, and that takes up what would have been Manchester United’s only free week.

“Both clubs play in the Europa League, this will be Wolves’ 38th, Danny, 38th match this season. United’s 34th, when you look at it, Wolves you could argue have already played a season of football, we’ve seen an embarrassing waning attendances in the FA Cup this weekend.

“I was at Loftus Road, the football was good, but the attendance was poor. Almost everywhere there was a significant drop compared to the club’s league attendances.

“We’ve already got too many games according to managers in what is an already exhausting schedule for players, so why on earth, why on earn put more strain on it?!

“The new winter break is scheduled for next month, when the schedule is split over two weeks.

“It’s going to be compromised in no small way, due to yet more Fourth Round replays being penciled in during that week.

“So they’ve done it in the Carabao Cup, they’ve scrapped all replays, it doesn’t diminish that competition, I’ll argue that.

“So replays are scrapped from the Fifth Round onwards in the FA Cup, but why wait? Why do it from the outset next season, scrap all replays in the FA Cup from the start, then that keeps everyone happy.”

The often vocal chairman of Peterborough United, Darragh MacAnthony, pointed out: “Ask Rochdale who will probably get TV for replay (£75k) plus gate the difference that replay could make to their budget. FA cup isn’t just about bloody Prem Clubs. Shame members of the press cant take off their Premier League hat & see that ?”

And then agreed with a fan who tweeted: “Agree Darragh, we may get the tv rights at Prenton Park for the replay vs Watford so the additional funds will be a huge difference and could provide Micky Mellon with 1 or 2 new players to help improve the squad and could quite possibly help us stay in League One.”

Jim White’s rant was certainly one that has got plenty of people on social media talking, and fair to say everyone slammed what he said – see those tweets on the next page.
