Jeff Stelling ‘in talks with two broadcasters about new role’ after leaving Sky Sports

Jeff Stelling is reportedly ‘in talks with two broadcasters about new role’ just a few weeks after leaving Sky Sports Soccer Special.

The Telegraph say that the BBC and Amazon want the 68-year-old presenter, who left Sky at the end of 2022/23 after 30 years.

BBC Radio 5 Live and Amazon Prime, which will broadcast the Champions League from the 2024/25 season, are known to be among leading suitors.

“There have been conversations”, one broadcaster told Telegraph Sport amid a race for his signature. “Most of the leading stations are in for him.”

Stelling is believed to be serving a term of gardening leave before he can begin any new deal.

After his 25-year stint as the host of Soccer Saturday came to an end last month, Stelling tweeted: “The morning after the day before. It all seems like an out of body experience (with my body, you would want to be out of it). I wanted to thank everyone for the overwhelming number of kind messages. I’m going to take a few weeks to assess my options and then decide what is next.”

He reassured fans, saying he had not retired, was just stepping down from Sky, and that there is ‘Still a bit of life in the old boy yet!’

Earlier in the season, he announced his plans to leave live on Soccer Saturday after significant changes were made to the lineup of the show.

Jeff Stelling’s son, Robbie, paid tribute to his Dad, hailing him as ‘the best there has ever been’.

‘Well done Dad, so proud of you,’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘You’ve put your heart and soul into the show and have no doubt left a mark on more than just the world of football.

‘As a father and broadcaster, you have taught me so much about football and life. You are the best there has ever been x’

Geoff Shreeves, a veteran interviewer who has been asked to accept a reduced contract, is also reportedly considering his future.

Peter Drury will come in to replace Martin Tyler as the voice and veteran commentator of Sky Sports. Tyler leaves after 33 years with the broadcaster.

Drury began working for NBC Sports in the US at the beginning of the last season. NBC, as well as Sky Sports, is owned by US media giant Comcast.

Stelling left Soccer Saturday on his terms, despite the fact that there had been many changes to the line-up before his departure.

After Stelling’s exit, Sky Sports’ Director of Football, Gary Hughes said:

“After a brilliant 30+ year career at Sky, including over 25 years as the much-loved host of Soccer Saturday, Jeff Stelling is leaving Sky Sports at the end of the current football season.

“Jeff has been synonymous with Saturday afternoon football for decades, exciting and enthusing football fans everywhere. His unique broadcasting ability and passion for the game has made Soccer Saturday an unmissable fixture for fans and has won him a multitude of awards.

“He will be sorely missed. Sky Sports will give him the great send off his remarkable and enduring contribution deserves before he leaves us at the end of May to spend more Saturdays with his beloved Hartlepool United.”

This is what social media users said with Jeff Stelling ‘in talks with two broadcasters about a new role’ after leaving Sky Sports…

@Waterpistolman: Would love him to be on 5live, he’s got all the knowledge and personality to be fantastic on the radio.

Geoff Gane: Unbelievable Jeff.

Haider Tahsin: Sky is dying

Jason Lee: BBC radio would be great to have him, would certainly boost the amount of listeners tuning in

Onefulhamboy: Jeff presenting Soccer Saturday on BBC2 with the old gang. Just think of the viewing figures. And no ad breaks

Timbertony: On Saturday I will watch whichever Channel Jeff Stelling is on. Sky were idiots letting him go but thats typical Sky only interested in making money not what their subscribers want.

The Don 24: he’d be wasted on motd or football focus. His forte is live reporting. It’s just that sky gave him a panel of muppets to work with

Andymard1: BBC all day… get rid of Lineker and Jenas

Andy.83: Get rid of lineker and have Jeff as the face of football and motd

Doodle_Dandy: Radio 5 Live could do with him. It’s become so bad I have to listen TalkSport.

Montgomery21: MOTD with Stelling would be so good.

Stevo: Can he replace Lineker please? MOTD might be more watchable then.

FukYew: Just shows it wasn’t about retirement, but getting out of Sky and moving on. 68 isn’t that old these days, while he’s got a good few years broadcasting left in him.

notinthistogether: Come on Amazon, just get your man and then start outbidding Sky for PL games.

Sunseeker: Brilliant presenter, will definitely boost ratings wherever he goes.

THFc to win: The core audience of SKY is about football … allied to quality presentation of the product … which Jeff Stelling has supplied for years. Along comes some DOPE who decides that Jeff is wrong for THEIR brand so they let him walk to the opposition … and they think they will remain in a dominant position long term !!! Sky lost over 15% of their subscriber base last year and its only going to get worse … cos Neville and Spit-the-dog never had … and never will have … the quality of Stelling !

Humorous: Sky lost Jeff when they removed his pals, Matt, Charlie, Phil and Kamara

Wicked Wango Card3: Anywhere he goes I’ll watch

GlazersAreHereToStay: Come on amazon grab Jeff

K_1664: Get him and the old guys from Soccer Saturday who have been let go over the last few years and Amazon or whoever would smash it doing a Saturday afternoon show. Oh and sign up Jaydee Dyer as he would be a good one to eventually take over the main role once Stelling eventually calls it a day.

Global Ambassador: Please don’t go to the horrendous BBC, Jeff.

Paul_Gillespe: Amazon get the boys back

Mr gill: Could reinvigorate MOTD to the Des Lynam days. Really understands the fans perspective and has a real gentleman side to him who presents for the enjoyment of the job rather than delving into political and controversial views.

Adamh266: Get him in at ITV to replace Poogatch
