Jeff Stelling aims savage dig at West Brom during cup tie against Brighton

Sky Sports Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling aims a savage dig at West Brom fans during the cup tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Seagulls came from behind to earn a 2-1 win at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon, with Jakub Moder and Neal Maupay cancelling out Callum Robinson’s strike against the Baggies who went down to 10-men.

While there was plenty to talk about on the game itself, with the game going to extra time while the referee gave marching order to Cédric Kipré, the game’s attendance got plenty of talk.

The ground itself has a capacity of more than 26,000, meaning the stadium was not even a third full when only 8,208 came through the turnstiles at the weekend.

It wasn’t hard for Brighton fans to out-sing their hosts but they packed out their section as well – and this was spotted by Stelling.

He said on Soccer Saturday: “I’m not sure West Brom fans have been told there is a game on this afternoon.

“Because The Hawthorns… I can see the visitors end and that is packed but I cannot see many West Brom fans there at the moment.”

The Championship outfit has an average of 22,000 for each of their home games this season – one of the best in the division – however as some would expect, the number has gone down drastically with minimal interested in the fixture.

It wasn’t just Jeff who spoke on the low turnout, as fans and rivals took aim with a cheeky taunt or two at their expense…

@robdrew1980: We can come out with all the excuses in the world but that is a shocking attendance. Particularly when Brighton have brought quite a few. Early rounds of cup matches should be included in your season ticket in my opinion.

@y2Jinks: That’s horrendous

@alfwwfc: Oh my god, they’re here they’re there they’re everywhere fkin where

@RFletcherWWFC: I don’t get why you would put West Bromwich under tight lockdown, but not the other areas of the Midlands? Really strange 🤷🏼‍♂️ #wba #wwfc #avfc #bcfc

@Sidaway_: Fucking state of this

@GeorgeTheStud: What is the point of West Brom

@eve_elizabethxx: The definition of embarrassing

@GeorgeSheldonAV: they all came by just the one minibus by the looks of it

@wwfcscott: Embarrassing club hahahaha

@jamiewalters23: Saving this for future ammunition. Albion at home. £15. 3pm Saturday kickoff. Against Premier league opposition.

@SlimeLanguage91: This is like those games in May when fans still had to be 2 metres apart and there was attendance caps

@DingleBal: Shithousery on national scale.Well done Jeff 😂

@tomwwfc22: Fuck me 🤣🤣🤣

Twitter users continued to react while Jeff Stelling aims a savage dig at West Brom during their cup tie against Brighton…

@pedalsingh: 😳 Imagine your top 4 in your league and you get a Home game against Premier League opposition at 3pm on a Saturday, in the most famous cup competition in the world. I think we sold more Samosas than this when we played Brighton.🤦🏾‍♂️🤣

@baggieblue: If you had to watch the football we’ve had to watch this season you would completely understand! I’m surprised that many turned up.

@nw1877: No point sending them a memo when they can’t read or write

@JasonJ1987: RIP Albion Fans tweeting the Oldham picture from 2012.

@philwolves49: Jeff is a hero 😂😂

@HarryRossHughes: Putting rivalries to one side, massive respect to West Brom for helping stop the spread of Covid by only playing at 20% capacity today 🙌 Fair play, #WBA 👏👏👏

@matt_vet_ashley: More people on the pitch than in the stands!

@markgeveritt: Is West Bromwich in Wales now? Playing behind closed doors?

@sibosibo_: They can never tweet those Oldham at home photos ever again. This is against premier league opposition too🤣🤣

@_KKWWFC: 15:00 Saturday kickoff as well. Mudded. 😂

@STAUNT0N: West Brom and Blues are finished clubs

@goldback: Social distancing at its finest

@TRCodie_: Even though I expected low attendances, manager promising a strong team against decent premier league opposition and only getting 8.2k through the door is beyond poor. Our home atmosphere has been shocking this season #wba
