While on this week’s feature of Ref Watch on Sky Sports, Jay Bothroyd argues that referees should take accountability for on-pitch mistakes.
Jay Bothroyd argues that referees should personally admit errors rather than through their union, as players value honesty and it could lead to appreciation, with repeated mistakes warranting demotion.
Dermot Gallagher agrees it might initially impress but warns that sympathy fades quickly, leading to ongoing criticism as errors persist across different referees.

Jay Bothroyd: “…afterwards and says, ‘yes, I made an error in this decision’. I think that way, I think players would be like, OK, you know, he’s admitted, not the referees’ union, he’s admitted that he’s made an error.”
Dermot Gallagher: “And I think you make a very good point for a very short period of time, because I think if a referee stood there today and said that, I think everybody in your camp, everybody would go, wow, that’s fantastic. I really appreciate that.
“When it happens next week, you go, hmm, okay when it happens on week four we’ll go hang on we heard this when are they going to get it right.”
Jay Bothroyd: “Well then that that’s when you say I don’t know if the referee’s on bonuses or anything like that but that’s what you make making a mistake once making it twice well now you’re going to get demoted now you’re not going to play referee a game the week after…”
Dermot Gallagher: “But a different referee comes out that. Sympathy is in very, very short supply, Jay, honestly. Sympathy for a referee is…”
Jay Bothroyd: “But I think all football players, sorry, we’re going on here, but all football players, you know, whether it’s management, whether it’s anything, we just want honesty.
“So when a referee comes out and says, I’ve made an error, I think players will appreciate that more than if an organisation, the Referees’ Union, just says, he’s made an error.”
On two penalty incidents during Fulham vs Man Utd…
Dermot said: “I do think the first one is a penalty. People will say Shaw probably commits a foul as well, but Bassey does commit the first foul. Mount goes by him, and as he goes by him, he grabs him.
“We’ve been told this season that, if somebody grabs somebody around their waistline and, with two hands, throws them to the ground, a non-football act is going to be penalised. The evidence is there. I think that’s a penalty.
“The other one looks bad because he puts his hands on his back, there’s no doubt about that.
“I listened to the VAR and they said it was more just moving him out of the way. I can understand Fulham being annoyed, but the VAR said it wasn’t an impactful push.”
On if Bruno Fernandes right to be ‘upset’ with referee, Jay said: “First and foremost, he should be hitting the target at the very least. Someone like Bruno Fernandes should be scoring penalties on the biggest stage.
“The thing I look at it is the referee has walked around him. He doesn’t have to, he could’ve just backed away and then this situation would’ve been avoided.
“He picked the ball up and carried on with the referee, when that should’ve just been put to bed, in my opinion. That’s gone now. He should just pick the ball up and re-focus.”
“I think that it should have been a foul”

On the James Trafford call:
Dermot: “The ball can hit his arm accidentally.”
Jay: “Whether it’s accidentally or not, if it doesn’t hit his arm, Mohammed Kudus goes through and scores. It’s still stopping a goal-scoring opportunity.”
On if it’s not handball, should he have been punished for the high challenge on Kudus?
Jay: “I thought he was going off. His knee is really high, Kudus could have got really hurt. And the fact it’s hit his arm, Kudus is going to have a tap-in for the goal.”
Dermot: “You can justify the ball hitting his arm but his challenge is probably the worst of the two.”
Jay: “How can you justify the ball hitting his arm?!”
Dermot: “He has to handle the ball deliberately. The second part is the grey area, because if the referee gives a foul, he’s off.”
Jay: “It’s lucky Tottenham won this game because if that was the deciding decision, there’d be big uproar. Who cares if it’s accidental or not, the handball. It’s stopped a goal-scoring opportunity!

On if it was a harsh decision to award penalty against Dewsbury-Hall?
Dermot: “It is harsh, but it is the rule.
“If you look at it, his arm is out. It hits his arm. It’s a shot on goal, so it’s always going to be punished.
“Once your arm is up that high, it’s always going to be given.”
Jay: “I don’t think that is an unnatural position, to be honest. His hand is close to his body. If his hand is out and it hits his hand then I would say definitely.
“It shouldn’t be a penalty in my eyes because all he’s done is try to block a shot. You don’t think about where your hands are, but his hand is still close to his chest.”
“That shouldn’t be a penalty in my eyes”

On if keepers now start going down after Martinez earned a foul at Villa?
Dermot: “Not many people expected a foul there. It’s not what I’d call a clear foul.
“The referee gives a foul, that’s his choice. The problem is, when the VAR looks at it, you see him go into Martinez.”
Jay: “The whole time, Collins is looking at the ball. There’s been contact. Last week, Bayindir stayed on his feet [against Arsenal] and he got punished for that one. When you look at Martinez, same thing but he’s just gone down.
“If Martinez had stayed on his feet, he wouldn’t have got it.”

Should Arsenal’s penalty have been awarded?
Dermot: “This is where we have a problem, isn’t it?
“In isolation, we can discuss this, but when you piece it together, one after the other like this, there’s no doubt there is much more contact in the Man City game than there is here.
“He does make contact; he just steps on his foot.”
Jay: “When you’re moving at speed, the smallest clip or touch can stifle you and you will go down.
“But the Oscar Bobb one, there’s much more contact on that one – and the defender in this one hasn’t really lunged, he’s just put his foot in the wrong position, which has caught Dowman.”
Should Timber’s second have been ruled out?
Dermot: “I’m not convinced it hits his hand, but if it does, it’s accidental. And because he’s not the scorer, he can’t be penalised.
“If it does strike his arm or his hand and he scores, it’s disallowed.”
Jay: “Because both players are so close together, even if it does hit his hand, I think it’s harsh to not give that goal.
“Both players are going for it and it’s there – it’s going to hit someone’s arm because it’s so high.
“If he moves his hand onto the ball, that’s different.”
“I don’t think it hit his hand”

Here’s how fans reacted as Jay Bothroyd argues that referees should take accountability for on-pitch mistakes…
@cdurant92: Jay Bothroyd isn’t ready or prepared enough for these debates. Players are on 100x times more than refs and hes sat talking about sanctioning them for bad performances? He had a few stinkers. I wonder if he’d agreed to sanction his weekly wage? š¤”
@Foxinthebox1: Whatās the point of this programme? Dermot just backs up his paymasters at the @FA_PGMOL! He was a decent ref but yet on here he never tells you what he actually thinks just what heās allowed to say to keep the bosses happy
@davidmdddddddd: Referees should be on a tiered points system: +10 for calm, fair games, +8 for big calls handled well, but -15 for clear game-changing errors, -8 for letting matches get nasty. Consistency = promotion, repeated mistakes = demotion. Accountability matters.
@cdurant92:
Does that apply to the footballers too?
10+ good pass
-10 good pass?.
Etc etc
Give it a rest
@MichaelBBWFC147: It’s the fact that they have VAR, every single possible camera angle, every speed, multiple people’s opinions, millions of poinds spent on it and STILL get it wrong. Just have the 1 referee to make the call, the only computerised interaction should be goal line technology!!!
@theproperKP: It would be helped however of players stopped cheating and diving for penalties and rolling around like they’re in absolute agony
@AnthonyBraithw7: Yep blame someone who has worked hard to get to the top years of sacrifice and missing family times to be criticised by average football giving everything in career, do a refereeing course, its not as easy as ex-footballers say !!!
@Dannyb3216: There is no point what so ever in ref watch. Dermot either sits on the fence are defends refs decisions. Major ones anyway. Just like having mike dean on soccer Saturday. Its absolutely pointless. Jay is %100 bang on here. Should be punishment for refs having bad games
@Wrightie7: Along with others⦠been saying it for years.
@OriginalDelboy: I like believing referees are perfect (doesn’t explain why VAR exist) unlike the rest of us. We just need a backup for VAR š
@SteveBoem: @SkySportsNews #refwatch Dermot Gallagher is an absolute joke – get rid of him – he is so out of touch with the game today #getrid
@hughesy1312: Listening to this Dermot clown on ref watch tells you everything you need to know why our refs are so shit #refwatch
@DixiReal: #Refwatch never heard so much shite in all my life. Dermot Gallagher doesnāt even believe half the nonsense heās coming out with himself. Games finished @FA_PGMOL
@MikeHull84: Dermot Gallagher trying to gas light the entire audience of @SkySportsNews right now. Blokes an absolute joke, how are Sky making all the changes yet weāve still got him on ref watch š
@Dominiho7: Love the fact Jay Boothroyd challenges Dermot Gallagher. Warnock and Smith never used to do that. Gallagher is all over the place with decisions. #RefWatch
@ecwc85: Fucking hell Dermot Gallagher contradicts himself all the time
