Javi Gracia releases statement on decision to resign from his post as Watford head coach

Javi Gracia releases a statement on the surprise decision to resign from his post as Watford head coach at the weekend.

He lasted just over three months in his second spell at the club, but a 2-0 home defeat to Swansea City that extended a winless run proved to be his final game in charge.

Gracia said that he “could no longer contribute with full conviction” at the Hornets, and resigned out of “responsibility and personal consistency”.

He leaves the club sitting 10th in the Championship, with 43 points from 29 games plated, 4 points from the playoff places.

GRACIA’S STATEMENT:

After deep and honest reflection, I have made the decision to voluntarily resign from my position as Watford FC manager. Out of responsibility and personal integrity, I believe the most honest course of action was not to continue in a project where I could no longer contribute with complete conviction.

Despite this, Watford FC is and always will be a very special club for me. I will be deeply grateful for the trust they placed in me during the two spells in which I had the privilege of leading the team. Both the club and its fans have always made me feel at home, and Vicarage Road will forever hold a special place in my heart and in the hearts of my family.

I also want to highlight the group of players, a young squad with enormous potential for growth. I am proud to work with them and accompany them on this stage of their development. I hope I have been able to contribute to their evolution as footballers and as people.

I also want to express my sincere gratitude to all the staff and to each and every person who works at the club day after day. From the very first moment, they have treated me with extraordinary kindness and warmth, making me feel like part of a true family. Their professionalism and human qualities have been fundamental in my daily life, and I will always carry them with me.

I am convinced that this team has a great future and will continue to grow, striving for ambitious goals. I wish Watford FC every success on the path ahead. I will always continue to support and wish this club the very best.

Here’s how fans reacted as Javi Gracia releases a statement on the decision to resign from his post as Watford head coach…

@Richwfc2: It’s what he doesn’t say that speaks volumes! No acknowledgment of hierarchy, #watfordfc & there are actually WFC fans think he left because he had run out of motivation etc! He ran out of patience for lies he no doubt was told & said do you know what I don’t need this!

@SmithyWFC85: Thanks for your honesty and hard work at the club. Best of luck for the future and sure you will be welcomed back

@LeeJackson_1: Bloody hell no wonder we fell off a cliff since Christmas bloke just couldn’t really be arsed. Complete waste of time. Just give me a coach who was born in the Championship who likes pace, flexibility and width ffs..

@BaitVic: Important but critical omission from this. It’s the “project” i.e the plans for the team that he says meant he could no longer contribute with conviction. Given he wanted to meet the owner to discuss the team/plans for future, fair to assume they didn’t agree #watfordfc

@DanHarvey74: Weak, pathetic, spineless.

@Hutchywutch: I like reading between the lines 83% more than the next man…but this is so vague there isn’t really anything that can be ascertained. People will read into it what they want, of course, that’s natural. But to me it’s just fog.

@louorns: This statement from Javi is nuts. Basically reads as he couldn’t be bothered from the get go and has no motivation for coaching anymore

@GabSutton: It’s a fair point. On the other hand, I’d say respect to him for being honest enough to step down if it didn’t feel right, as opposed to carrying on half-heartedly for another pay-out. Had reportedly a two-year contract, could’ve got a few quid compensation from that in what might be his last job in football.

@louorns: I think that’s the bare minimum, albeit I am side eyeing him doing it when we’re on our worst run of the season

@GabSutton: Yeah, if you wanted him gone then at least he’s done the honourable thing – that’s how I’d look at it

@JackWFC1234: I don’t think he can win in this situation from his critics. If he was to stay on he’d be called a coward and would continue to be hounded for his admittedly terrible management, and if he leaves which he had citing lack of willpower, he’s also hounded.

@SmithyWFC85: I guess he is being honest but all managers have tough times and do ride out the storm occasionally. Maybe there is more in his personal life going on too? Suppose if the manager is seen lacking motivation then that isn’t a good look for the players .

@WatfordPod: Very interesting statement. Certainly aligns with other reporting around his departure. Makes you wonder why he took the job and club sought him out? Good vibes post Pezzolano and not a lot else. #WatfordFC

@lee_harris6: This reflects so badly on Javi. Basically he didn’t want the job but took it cause he thought it would be easy. It wasn’t so he blamed the squad & then left when there was some pressure. Also reflects really badly on the Pozzos. Noticeable that barely any players wished him well.

@CharlieH29: Nice words on a sad occasion. And he did the honourable thing and made the decision on his personal terms which makes a pleasant change.

@WfcJoe_: Boooo, call out the pozzos and say it’s cus you didn’t get the backing you deserved.
