Jamie Vardy silences West Ham fans who chanted about his wife; Lopetegui responds to boos

Jamie Vardy silences West Ham fans who chanted about his wife; and Julen Lopetegui responds to boos and chants aimed at him and his side.

West Ham fans sang about Jamie Vardy’s wife Rebekah during a VAR check for a potential Vardy goal just minutes into the game

Vardy of course took full advantage when the goal was eventually given. West Ham fans then directed their anger at manager Julen Lopetegui, singing “you’re getting sacked in the morning”.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring in the second minute; with Bilal El Khannouss doubling their lead against the run of play; Patson Daka netted a third in the 90th minute, before Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench and grabbed the Hammers a 93rd minute consolation goal.

Leicester captain Jamie Vardy speaking to Amazon Prime: “As a striker you always want to score, it’s what we’re there to do. I’m over the moon the get on the scoresheet.

“We’ve had one full day together. You could see some stuff worked and some was rusty. We’ve got more time for the manager to get his things across.

“We know what quality he [Bilal El Khannouss] has. He does it every day in training. Hopefully, it’s the first of many. We kick on now.

On fans: “It’s great, we can hear them all signing but like I said, it’s just the start. We need to knuckle down now.”

Leicester defender Conor Coady speaking to Amazon Prime: “The lads put in a great shift. We can play better. It was all about winning, it was one for the manager. He’s been in for a couple of days now and we’ve had a tiny bit of time to work with him. We had a lot of meetings and trying to get ideas across. the big one was to be aggressive and get across to the ball.

“What a footballer, what a person, what a fella, what a team-mate. His goal was brilliant. It’s that close to being offside and that’s how he plays the game. He deserves everything he gets from this football club.

“There’s an awful lot of talent and we haven’t shown it. We said our season starts. It’s important we go again and roever well.

“You can always get through it. I’ve been here before, I’ve been in football a long time and when you’re in those dark places, you can find a way through it if you listen to the right people. Listen to the manager and make sure you take his ideas on board. The weekend was a dark place but you have to dig deep. We’ve got a long way to go but it’s a great start.”

Leicester defender Conor Coady, speaking to Premier League Productions: “Relief. Really good. We have only had two players with the manager so it was tough. To listen to his ideas, to listen to what he wants to do. He has gave us a lot in meetings. Tonight was about grit and graft, and showing that we belief in what we want to do with the manager. A huge win for us. A little nervy at times but we got there in the end.”

On what Ruud van Nistelrooy has said to the team: “That word [aggression] is huge in what he has brought in the last couple of days. Aggression, getting up to the ball, getting contact. It’s as simple as that. The lads had a good go today, we played well in parts. Could we have played better? Of course we can. That today was huge for us, it’s massive for us going forward. Important that we won the game.”

On facing 30 shots from West Ham: “I don’t like the sound of that. I’m a bit gutted you told me that! That needs to change because we can’t give that many shots away. The most important thing is winning and winning it how we did.”

On the win giving them belief: “It’s huge. When you win games it breeds confidence. It was quite nervy at times in the first half and you could feel that. The nervousness gets to the crowd and they can feel it, of course they do, we’re all human beings. We have to put that to bed. It’s a breath of fresh air, the manager has been fantastic.”

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “What I am feeling today is frustration because we lost. Frustration because we deserved so much more. We had 31 shots, that is incredible, but that is football and football is not easy. The first shot they have, they score.

“We did a very good first half, we had a lot of chances but there are days when the ball does not want to go into the ball. It is hard for the boys – they deserve much more, the fans, it is a hard day for us. The second half, after the second goal, we started losing a bit. When you are losing the match, sometimes you don’t choose well. Until then I had the feeling we could draw the match but we didn’t score and we risked a lot in the last minute and they scored the third goal. We didn’t score in the many chances we had.

“Today we lost, we are very frustrated but in the same way I can say nothing about the players, they fight until the end. It’s not easy to explain football some days.”

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui speaking to Amazon Prime: “It’s frustrating because I think we deserve much more. It’s hard to say this when you lose 3-1 but it’s true. Normally you have to win this match but we didn’t score when we have to do and we suffered after the first goal. We did very well in the first half, we had a lot of chances but we didn’t score. Football is about goals. It’s a hard day for us. Maybe we have to remember this game as a way that we have to build for the next matches.

“I am thinking I am very frustrated and tomorrow we are looking for the next challenge knowing that we can change the next situation.

“They want to win for them, for me, for the club. Sometimes you deserve much more when you are able to create this number of chances. It’s a frustrating day but we have to think about the next challenge. Each match is important and the next match is the most important.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “In the end you look at the result and the three points, in the position that we are in, it’s vital. With the other fixtures of this round we knew it was a big one for us. The result is what matters but I have also seen the game and West Ham were dominant. I think our fighting spirit got us through the game and we were effective in scoring. A great night.

On conceding 31 shots: “It’s something to work on. That’s a fact. But the spirit of this team, and the energy and every player doing everything they can off the ball – I have seen that. There was a reaction with the crowd because they can see the players are putting the performances in and you can build something.

“We know the level in the Premier League and we know every game we play that everything has to be right. We have to train and develop our counter attack, defending, our possession. Lots of things to work on but very happy with the three points.

“I said before the game, the third day we are working together, and I am making decisions on who is in and out and I have not even spoken with them. I can only compliment the players in how they reacted.”

Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy speaking to Amazon Prime: “First and foremost this is what we said before the game, we needed spirit and energy and to get a reaction from the crowd. The foundation for us going forward is everyone working their socks off, fighting for every inch and defending together. We can look further then and they did that in an unbelievable way.

On Vardy goal: “We know he makes those runs and it’s a great assist. Bilal had a great game with a goal and assist. Great run and calm finish around the legs of the goalkeeper and what a time.

“I said after the game, they’re buying into some new ideas like the 4-4-2 formation and being very compact and together. Winning our duels and playing the ball. I think we have the profiles to do ball recoveries and playing forward. If we want to get a breather then we need to get possession on a more consistent basis, if not then we get out-pressed.

“We know the Premier League is brutal. We know what our task is. We also know how much possession and how many shots West Ham had. We know how tough the Premier League is and we saw that today with a West Ham team, we had to give everything for the three points. On a long-term basis, we know the performances need to get better and it’s something we have to persist with. The 3-0 was a relief. It was a very good finish from Patson.”

Leicester goalscorer Bilal El Khannouss speaking to Amazon Prime: “We are very happy with the new manager, he arrived two days ago, and there’s a new dynamic in the group.

“When you’re playing in the Premier League, I fulfilled my dream of scoring. It’s only the beginning of a long story.

“We put them under pressure and we’re very happy. It’s only the start and we do it again the next day.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Jamie Vardy silences West Ham fans who chanted about his wife; and Lopetegui responds to boos and chants aimed at him and his side…

@wrjn25: Really not sure how opposing fans haven’t figured out yet that the more you abuse him, the stronger he gets. Honestly just clapping everything he does would be a better tactic for putting him off 😂

@ajwatchLCFC: He is a dying breed! There will never be another player like Vardy!

@SAFC4LIFEBUTCH: He is genuinely the best little shit house we’ve seen.

@WestHamJoshV: Julen Lopetegui clearly isn’t the answer. Change of manager needed immediately before this squad ends up in a relegation battle. No identity or game plan whatsoever.

@WHUFCGeezer: The concern of the fanbase should be directed solely at the board. Will they identify and bring in a quality replacement at whatever cost to lead a long term project with a defined style of play or will they simply look for the next cheap option? As usual they will “kick the can down the road”. Clubs going nowhere under these jokers.

@chriswhu91: Well done West Ham not only do you manage to ruin Saturdays and Sundays but also Tuesdays! Atleast we still have Mondays

@Alamps81: Assume they didn’t address the fact Leicester have this unknown striker who peels off and runs off defenders shoulders… he’s only been doing it for about 26 years #westham #whufc

@AzamWHUFC: Know for a fact they won’t sack Lopetegui and will give him the Wolves game. We will beat them narrowly and it’ll keep him in the job. Embarrassing how this club is predictably operated from the top.

@Antiguamann: 5 changes before kick off, a further 5 during the game, a game we dominated but couldn’t do the basics of defending, conceding soft goals, dont take our chances. Looked ragged and disheveled last 20 mins, clearly not working with J-Lo his time has to be up terrible appointment

@mattynewton81:
Useless.
Can’t finish our dinner
Terrible defending
Awful ref too, which will be forgotten about.
If ref doesn’t wrongly disallow the goal when Leicester keeper threw it into his own net, would have been 1-1 rather than 2 nil and game on.

@EndeeFootball: Lopetegui’s tenure is a shambles. Losing to Leicester tonight like that just adds to the embarrassment.There is no way he survives the night in his role.

@WestHamViews_: SACK HIM!!!

@danwoff98: Get him out.

@whugdz: I speak for ALL West Ham fans when I say we want David Moyes to save us from this AGAIN.

@FosseHub: You’re welcome. Sack him asap and good luck

@BBQ_Penguin: you’s should never have sacked moyes, proper weird decision that.

@kjohno10: Just conceded 8 in two games. Not sure it’s just the oppositions box we need to worry about.
