Jamie Carragher was warned by Sky Sports after making a ‘bullying’ joke in an interview with Gary Neville, David Jones and Patrick Davison.
The former Liverpool player joked that Manchester United’s dismal form is because Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer the manager to bully referees.
That left fellow pundit Gary Neville stunned, before asking him live on the Football Show: “Do you think the reason Manchester United have dropped off Gary is because Ferguson is not into referees now?
David Jones and reporter Patrick Davison laughed, before Carra added: “I’m deadly serious.”
Neville responded by saying: “I think that’s libel actually. You’re suggesting Manchester United won championships through basically influencing or buying referees.”
But Carragher asked: “Well, how do you go from first to falling off a cliff to seventh or eighth now you haven’t got a manager intimidating referees?”
The conversation quickly moved on after the ex-Premier League defender revealed he received a message in his earpiece from one of the show’s bosses, warning him to be “careful”.
