Jamie Carragher slams Everton for mocking former player Anthony Gordon on social media after having his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford.
The morning after the 0-0 draw at Goodison Park, Everton uploaded a video of Gordon’s spot kick being saved, adding a buzzer sound for effect, clearly intended to mock him.
It caught the attention of Jamie Carragher who expressed his disapproval, highlighting Gordon’s contributions to Everton, including helping them avoid relegation from the Premier League, his local lad status having come through Everton’s academy, and the fact that Everton sold him for £40 million.

Carragher’s critique was not just about the act of mocking but seemed to reflect on Everton’s management and fanbase’s behaviour towards a player who, in his view, deserved better treatment given his history with the club.
Gordon’s move from Everton to Newcastle was contentious, forcing a transfer by not attending training, which soured his relationship with the club and its fans.
Everton’s statement on his departure was notably cold, omitting the usual thanks or best wishes, which set the tone for ongoing animosity.
While Carragher’s views were strong, there was a split in opinion among football fans and commentators, some arguing that in the modern football landscape, such banter is part of the game, especially given the circumstances of Gordon’s departure.
Others, like Carragher, felt it was in poor taste, especially since Gordon had been a local product with significant contributions to Everton.
This incident not only highlights the often raw emotions in football, especially between clubs and players whose departures are acrimonious, but also reflects on the modern use of social media in football culture where clubs engage directly with fans through humour, satire, or in this case, mockery.
Carragher’s stance, rooted in respect for the game’s traditions and player pathways, contrasts with the evolving digital interaction between clubs, players, and fans.
Everton fans created a hostile reception, booing and jeering, but Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was pleased with how Gordon responded, he said: “Naturally he will be disappointed but a much better performance from him today than here last year, I thought he dealt with the occasion well.
“I thought he handled that disappointment really well as I know from personal experience, not missing a penalty but making a mistake, the moment goes against you and plays on your mind. It can affect you negatively.
“He really learned from last season’s game and international experience. There was a lot of pressure on him on that moment.
“He has been an outstanding penalty taker so I have no issues with him taking it or taking them in the future.
“Anyone can miss a penalty. We absolutely support him and he’s been incredible for us and tactically he gave them a problem.”
Pickford said, with it his first penalty save since keeping out James Maddison’s spot kick for Leicester in May 2023: “You try to double-bluff each other and I’ve got the better of him tonight, and I’m pleased as it was a big moment in the game and managed to get us a draw.
“I don’t think Ant executed it to perfection and he’ll be disappointed, but I’m there to make the save and that’s what I’ve done.
“I back myself in pens and I think it is the first time I’ve saved one in a while.”
This was also Pickford’s first penalty he had saved in nine attempts.
Everton’s Sean Dyche praised Pickford’s professionalism: “He’s had a fair share of question marks this season – we all have,” he said after a taking a fifth point from three matches.
“Part of the resilience of being a top footballer is about dealing with that and seeing it through and staying resolute to what you do.
“He is a very good professional and showed that with his performance today.”
Dyche wasn’t happy with a penalty not being awarded to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with VAR ruling he had kicked the back of Dan Burn and not the other way around.
“It’s a bizarre one. Their penalty there is a bit of to-ing and fro-ing but you can’t do that, we know that,” he added.
“The thing I can’t work out is you see so many weak penalties and he (Calvert-Lewin) has clearly tried to strike it at goal and their lad interrupts it.
“I don’t know where it is with penalties. I know our record is awful, we don’t get them.
“There will be some technical reason, the powers that be always give us a technical reason when we ask the question.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Jamie Carragher slams Everton for mocking former player Anthony Gordon on social media…
@Lea_EFC: Jamie Carragher: Local lad who supported Everton as a child but has turned his back on them to support their rivals.
Turncoat if you will.
@PeterJMacca: You do spit on kids though Jamie so I don’t think we’ll be taking any advice from you I’m afraid
@TheEvertonEnd: Refused to train, refused to play, we accommodated his move late Jan, left ourselves short in relegation run in. Came Goodison, subbed on at 90 mins in an already 4-1 game, fist-pumping/gloating towards tunnel camera after result that steered the club which give him everything into relegation. Whatever lad 👍
@LeeFMc83: He did absolutely FUCK ALL to help keep us up. He did the exact opposite. Keep out of issues that don’t concern you and you clearly haven’t educated yourself about.
@gdc1878: Your opinion is irrelevant you piss stinking gobshite 👍
@LBLFC_: Spot on Jamie. Sick of these trophyless punks thinking there shit doesn’t smell. The biggest achievement they’ve had in 30 years was avoiding relegation with the biggest tory ever, Frank Lampard. Pitch invasions for avoiding relegation. Thank fuck my da was a Red.
@MightyBluesYT: Remember when you spat in the face of a child lad? Sit this one out ye silly dope 👍🏻
@NeilA1878: Grow up and go and spit on some kids you tit
@agbnufc_: What a tweet Jamie, was not expecting this kinda fact bomba from you.
@TheToffeesDot: Jamie, do you still spit at children when you get angry?
@RichySouthern: Don’t forget about chasing him down the street effing and jeffing at him. And they wonder why he wanted out. 🫠 He’s since played in the champions league & been called up for England while Everton are still stinking out the premier league 😂😂😂😂
@EvertonNewsFeed: Oh give over. This is a lad who refused to train and play in a game (under Frank Lampard as well btw) 😴
@cattywhites2: Oh you’re joining in are you now? He wanted out cos he cudnt get his own way. He downed tools, refused to train, refused to get on the coach. You’re as bad as him condoning that. Still at least we didn’t burn his shirt or send death threats to our own keeper hey? K’off kopite
@1BearTruth: Fk off! You blow hot & cold all the time about Everton. This rat left when the club was fighting for it’s life, chose the easy way out with a move &has tried to rub salt in the wounds ever since! He didn’t help keep us up, he went on strike missing training on multiple occasions!
@BeniToffee: He helped with nothing, he went on strike!!!He also acted like a cock pre penalty. A so called professional football analyst probably should check on facts before posting complete drivel.
@greenie1878: Carragher and Gordon are two of a kind really. Happy to shit on our doorstep then whine like bitches when they slip over in it. Mock and disrespect us then cry foul when we show them up for what they are. The door is locked boys, now run along and bother someone else 👋🏻
@tarscouseki2: Jamie carragher local lads known as spit the dog 👍👍👍 Anthony Gordon local red down tools forcing a move he’s a rat. @GNev2 sort your mates head out here for god sake
