James Ward-Prowse has been told to ‘stick to free-kicks’ as he slips taking a penalty in a pre-season friendly over the weekend.

The Southampton player had a moment to forget from the penalty spot on Saturday, with Russell Martin’s side out in Turkey to take on Goztepe.

Having fallen 1-0 down, Saints were given a 58th minute penalty, but taking it was set piece specialist Ward-Prowse, who suffered an unfortunate slip, and sent the ball high and wide.

Southampton managed to get an equaliser just six minutes later, via young forward Carlos Alcaraz, with the match ending 1-1.

Göztepe first half: Lis, Bayrak, Nukan, Serbest, Dere, Koybasi, Kayan, Palmer, Traore, Mamah, Ngalina.

Göztepe second half: Ozcimen, Kaan, Erkam, Erhan, Taha, Emre, Tugbey, Furkan, Tijanic, Diallo, Kvasina.

“It was good, I enjoyed it,” said Russell Martin post-match. “Very different feel for a pre-season friendly. Good atmosphere, small pitch, difficult pitch.

“I saw some stuff I really liked, saw some stuff that we need to work on, which I think is inevitable for the second game.

“We’ve had two tough days of work in the heat too, the lads were out there on the training pitch this morning. So all in all I’m really pleased we were so competitive.

“The last half hour, I was really pleased with the guys who came on. The game looked how it should look really. It was attack after attack; we just couldn’t make the most out of our really good chances.

“We limited them [Göztepe] to very few, mainly from our mistakes. But they’re good, I really enjoyed it. Credit to the manager and his team.

“We’re going to face that shape a lot in the Championship this season. We haven’t faced it yet because in training we’re working on our shape, it’s not something we’ve come across. So we’ll take so much learning from that, I’m really pleased.”

Speculation over Ward-Prowse’s future sees West Ham looking to bring the midfielder back to the top flight for the 2023/24 season.

He has only missed six competitive career penalties, five for Southampton and once for England, and scored 18, however his latest slip will no doubt be the highlight of them all.

West Ham chiefs are looking to bid £20million, but Saints bosses are reportedly demanding double.

It is his free-kick record that is hot in form, having netted 17 in the Premier League – only one behind the competition’s record holder David Beckham.
