Jaden Philogene puts Ipswich ahead with absolute screamer then cheekily rattles Norwich fans

Jaden Philogene puts Ipswich ahead with absolute screamer then cheekily rattles Norwich fans in Sunday’s East Anglian Derby.

On 32 minutes, Cedric Kipre put the hosts ahead when a deep corner from the left was worked back into the middle, before dropping to the goal scorer, who unleashed powerful half-volley into the roof of the net.

188 seconds later, Oscar Schwartau got Norwich level, a corner glanced clear in the middle, with it falling to Schwartau on the edge of the D and a first-time volley came off a defender and deflected inside the post past the right hand of the diving Alex Palmer.

On the verge of half time, Jaden Philogene produced a very special goal, that would be ‘talked about for years to come’. A 30-yard rocket with his left foot which into the top corner via the fingertips of Vlad Kovacevic and clipping underside of the bar.

In the 71st minute, Ipswich cleared a corner, only for Matusiwa to deflect a shot behind for another. Hirst headed the set piece against his own crossbar.

Shortly after, former Norwich player turned Ipswich new boy Marcelino Nunez came on to cheers and a chant of “In your head, Nunez, Nunez”.

Seconds after coming on, Jack Clarke put the Tractorboys 3-1 up. Marcelino Nunez sent Ivan Azon through, his shot made its way past Vlad Kovacevic but came back off the base of the post where Clarke followed it in to tuck home from close range with his first touch.

The final whistle blew and a run of 16 years and 14 derbies without a win is at an end. The victory takes Ipswich up to 9th in the Championship table, with 13 points from 8 games played, while Norwich are 19th with 8 points from 9 played.

Brenner Woolley (BBC Radio Suffolk commentator): “That’s one of the great derby goals, it’s a pearler. That is sublime from Jaden Philogene.”

Sky Sports’ Andy Hinchcliffe: “Five goals for Philogene at Portman Road this season. A moment of genius.”

Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones: “Ipswich haven’t played with much cohesion or created that many chances but their individual quality has paid dividends. Stunning goal from Philogene.”

Mick Mills (Former Ipswich and England captain on BBC Radio Suffolk): “It was a very tiring 45 minutes. I was irritated with the way we started. We went and decided to play short passes, play out from the back and it did not work and it made Norwich comfortable.

“All of a sudden we scored and excellent goal from the corner, they got a little bit fortunate with the equaliser and made it really difficult for us.

“But then in a half that hasn’t been our best JP picks the ball up and he’s unleashed a shot which was outstanding.

“Now I would like the manager now to admit the style has not worked. He’s got to encourage early ball to the front players a bit more. We’ve got to look better with in the opposition half.”

Rob Butler (BBC Radio Norfolk sport): “The bottom line is Nowich have not lost this game yet. They’ve been the better team and it was a great goal from JP.

“This game is not over. Norwich just need to stay positive because there’s every chance they can still win this let alone draw it.”

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna speaking to Sky Sports: “The big thing with a derby match, especially with the narrative around it and the record is the outcome, so it’s a great win, it’s a convincing win. We were good value for the 3-1 to be honest

“Performance-wise, our execution was mixed. I really liked our intent, we got from the middle of League One to the Premier League for being brave and we came into the game with that intent today. We didn’t execute as well as what we can in certain moments but it’s a really new group, playing with the tension of getting together and getting some momentum up. So really proud with the intent we tried to play.

“Some big goals, incredible by Jaden Philogene and we could have got more so lots to be happy about.”

Norwich head coach Liam Manning told Sky Sports: “I didn’t think there was a huge amount in it in the first half. Nothing in it.

“We responded well to going behind. To concede a poor goal from our perspective, turning it over in midfield, obviously a great finish, but the timing of the goal kills it when we could have been going in 1-1 at half-time.

“(The third goal) is where we’re at at the minute, giving the ball away, you can have all the plans and tactics but you have to have the foundations and basics in place.

“We just don’t seem to do that to other teams.”

Ipswich goalscorer Jaden Philogene told Sky Sports: “It was a big game for us, for 16 years we haven’t won, we got the job done.

“I won the ball back, saw an opening to shoot, took the shot on with my left foot and it went in.

“We’re on an upward curve (in the league) but we have a lot more to work on, once we get going it could be game over (for everyone else).”

Norwich wing-back Jack Stacey told BBC Radio Norfolk:

“There’s anger, frustration (in the dressing room).

“We feel like we probably let the fans down today.

“We got it back to one-all and they scored a good goal which is very hard to stop, fair play, but we came out for the second half thinking that we can create chances and we’re really in the game.

“To concede the third goal and how we reacted after that is where the frustration is.

“We’re not making hard enough for teams to score against us. We’ll use the break to work on certain things and look towards the next game – in two weeks time we’re going to be in a better position than we are now.”
