“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise” – Bruno Fernandes on his penalty miss

“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise” – The words of Bruno Fernandes on Chris Kavanagh bumping into him before his penalty miss.

Bruno Fernandes said that he was triggered by the referee before blasting his spot kick over the crossbar in the 1-1 draw with Fulham.

During a penalty kick, referee Kavanagh accidentally bumped into Bruno Fernandes while moving aside, disrupting his preparation.

Fernandes appeared furious, missed the shot by skying it over the bar, with Gary Neville attributing the miss to the referee’s “clumsy” interference.

Man Utd were left frustrated in the end as Fulham fought back to draw, Smith Rowe levelled with first touch after coming on after Yoro headed in the opener off Muniz, Calvin Bassey is adamant that he was fouled in the build-up to the goal.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to BBC MOTD: “We cannot be satisfied with one point. We came here to win the game. We were defending very well, but in one of them they got their goal. For us, it is very disappointing to not win the game today.”

On his missed penalty: “As everyone has their own routine. I missed the penalty because I kicked the ball very badly.”

“We are very disappointed. Obviously, we were into the game. We should have controlled it better after our goal and made them run.

“We were controlling well runs into the box from their midfielders.”

On new signings: “They are great players for us. They have great abilities.

“We will see much more from them. We are very happy to have them in the team.”

Speaking to Sky Sports about missing his penalty: “I was upset. As a penalty-taker, you have your own routines, your own things that you do.

“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment, but that’s not the excuse for missing the penalty.

“I had a very bad hit on the ball. I put my foot too under the ball and that’s why it ended up going over the bar.”

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “I think we scored the goal and then we forgot about how we play. We want to win so badly, and that is a good feeling, that we scored a goal and everyone on the pitch was thinking, ‘Let’s hold onto the advantage and try to win the game’. For me that is the moment that we have to enjoy more and push the opponent. We tried to press the opponent super high and left a lot of space.

“We have to grow up a lot as a team. For me the most important thing is that during the week they were working really hard, today we worked really hard, and we are going to improve. The moment that changed the game was our goal.”

On how the team goes about ‘growing up’: “Training, in the game. You need to win to have the feeling to relax a little bit, not in the intensity and the way we play, but maintaining our mind. We suffer a little bit in the end because the momentum changed more with the goal of Fulham.

“In the first half we were there, we missed a penalty…Fernandes has so much responsibility with him that I felt the lack of joy [when he missed] and he was thinking in the past. Now we have to move forward no matter what happens.”

Speaking to Sky Sports: “We can do better but we are putting the effort so that is the most important to me. In some moments we did well, especially in the beginning of the game. After the goal we were just thinking about the result. We were ok until the goal and then we were not smart in that moment.”

“We have to think about the performance. I know what the feeling is of a player who has to win every match. We missed a penalty, we missed some chances and then we score and we had to defend that goal. We have to focus on our movements and play until the end.”

On Fulham’s corners: “We tried to press high but after a few times we pushed the ball to the side too soon. We wanted to press all of the time but sometimes we have to manage the game in that moment and try to drop a little bit. They had more space than us when they were attacking.”

On Bruno Fernandes’ penalty miss: “I think he is not used to missing penalties. He knows the importance that this moment can have [and make a] huge impact on the team. During the game he was not happy because he was not involved and he has so much responsibility and I think he thought missing the penalty was huge for us.”

On the importance of the result: “We just want to win games. The players know they are playing in a club where they need to be better. Today they work really hard and all week in training. I am really confident that we are going to get many wins.”

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to Sky Sports: “The commitment with the plan, the attitude, the will and the desire as well as the players who came in, they made a difference too. In the first 15 minutes we lost almost all of the duels. They had very good moments with Matheus to score and we had a very good chance with Josh [King]. They created some moments from set pieces, they scored and there was a great reaction from the boys. There was a clear foul but great reaction from the boys. I’m proud of the fans and how they were with us. It was important to start with three points at home but we are facing a good team.”

On if he understands why VAR didn’t overturn Manchester United’s goal: “I cannot understand. I would like to explain everything to you from the first whistle until the last but it is not my job. I don’t want to go in this direction. Everybody in the world saw what happened this afternoon at Craven Cottage.”

On using his players and more signings: “We have a great group of lads. They give everything for the shirt, good mindset and they always want to learn. They are giving everything as always. They love the football club. We as the club we need help, myself and the players need help and new signings to give different conditions for us and more options at the end. The players that came in were brilliant. Last week was the same and last season it was the story of our season. Harry Wilson had a great pre-season and started on the bench, massive impact from him. [Emile] Smith Rowe is important for us and he can score goals and arrive in the right spots.”

Fulham boss Marco Silva speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the VAR decisions, including the penalty awarded to Man Utd: “I would like to explain everything about the VAR decisions this afternoon but I can’t. I can’t because they were different in many different ways. They were unbelievable seeing two fouls at the same time, Shaw on Rodrigo and Bassey on Mount at the same time, both fouls, and they saw that Bassey foul was half of a half second before the Shaw foul on Muniz.

“Then the second one [the United goal]. I think what I saw is what everyone saw in the stadium, everyone around the world saw it. Two players were isolated at a corner and one player pushed the other to head the ball. If you go by the rules you know what is going to happen. I would like those types of decisions to always be the same. Simple as that.”

Pleased for a point? “I’m pleased for the reaction, pleased how we came back in the second half after a goal that should be disallowed, the way that we finished the game, pleased with the way the players came in performed and the way that we played against a big team like Man Utd again.”

Fulham forward Emile Smith Rowe, speaking to Sky Sports: “It was really quick, I know when Alex [Iwobi] gets the ball, I know his trademark cross and I have to be there to finish.”

On the importance of coming off the bench and making a difference: “We are very competitive in training, we all want to score goals and contribute to the team. We know when we come off the bench we have to work hard and try and score.”

On his expectations for this season: “Just to stay fit, get consistent minutes on the pitch, give my all for the team and hopefully we can start winning games.”

Fulham’s Alex Iwobi, speaking to Sky Sports: “The resilience to come back. We knew that the difference could be made off the bench. It is better to not lose, and we are able to get a good point against a good team.

“I was aiming for Raul [Jiminez], but he [Emile Smith-Rowe] made the run in-behind, and I trusted him to get on to the end of the ball.

“We knew that we would be able to get behind their two midfielders and that their centre-backs would want to jump – we exploited that today.”

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, speaking to Sky Sports: “Especially the second half we pushed could have deserved more. We had some good moments.

“We did well to get back into the game. Of course, they have missed a penalty as well.

“I think it is harsh. I understand why it is given. Where my foot is, I am trying to stay strong. I have sort of pulled him over my foot.

“Refs have got to protect us as well. I am strong. If it is someone stronger, it doesn’t look as bad.

“You have seen it given, and you have not seen it. Everything looks worse in slo-mo.

“Something to learn for me and all the boys – to be a bit more streetwise.”

On Bruno Fernandes’ missed penalty: “I say it is justice. I didn’t think it was a pen, and then he missed it, so sort of a let off.”

On Leny Yoro pushing Calvin Bassey in the build up to Man Utd’s goal: “It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball and it is an advantage to him. It should have been disallowed.

“When the referee looks back at I think they will be disappointed. I cannot say too much, otherwise I will get a fine!

“It is a foul. When you go up to a jump, any little touch can put you off.

“He wasn’t trying to speak to me – he was trying to speak to my captain.

“What do you want me to do? Jump on the floor. It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball.”
