Ipswich poke fun with how they announced signing of ex-Norwich player Marcelino Nunez

Ipswich poke fun with how they announced the controversial signing of ex-Norwich player Marcelino Nunez on social media.

Marcelino Nunez has joined the Canaries’ rivals for £10m, on a four-year deal, and has been warned to face potential fan backlash.

The 25 year old, made 119 appearances over three years at Norwich, where his contract was expiring this season. Norwich’s sporting director called it a tough but beneficial decision.

The two sides face off on October 5th at Portman Road, where Nunez could expect a hostile reception from Norwich fans.

IPSWICH STATEMENT:

The club is excited to announce the signing of Chilean central midfielder Marcelino Núñez.

Marcelino joins Town on a permanent deal from Norwich City, signing a four-year contract to the summer of 2029.

The 25-year-old has won 30 international caps for his country, scoring five goals, and becomes the first Chilean player to sign for Town.

Prior to moving to England in 2022, the midfielder represented Universidad Catolica in his homeland, making a total of 83 appearances in all competitions and scoring 11 goals. He won two Chilean top-flight titles during his time at the Santiago club while also featuring in the Copa Libertadores, South America’s leading club competition.

He joined Norwich ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and quickly became an important player for the Canaries. During his three seasons at Carrow Road, he made 119 appearances and scored 12 goals.

His first international call-up saw him included in the Chile squad for the 2021 Copa America, with his first cap coming in September 2021 during a World Cup qualifying match against Colombia.

He arrives at Town having played three times for Norwich at the beginning of the 2025/26 season, scoring the Canaries’ winner away at Watford in the Carabao Cup.

NORWICH STATEMENT:

Marcelino Núñez has completed a permanent transfer to Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee.

The Chilean international signed for Norwich in summer 2022, going on to play 119 times.

Sporting director Ben Knapper said: “It goes without saying, this is a significant transfer for all parties involved. We absolutely understand the feeling and sentiment from our supporters at this time, and this was of course an extremely difficult decision for us to take.

“As with every transfer, there are many factors that we must consider, including the wishes of the player, their contractual position, team performance and, of course, the offer itself. Ultimately, when considering all of those aspects, we firmly believe that this is in the best interests of our club.

“We are committed to making what we feel are the best possible decisions for our football club, assessing all factors in the round, in both the short, medium and long term. Of the possible scenarios and outcomes that this situation has presented, we believe this is the one that leaves the club in the best position.”

Former goalkeeper Andy Marshall, the last player to make the direct switch in 2001, said, per BBC News: “I’m glad the heat’s going to be off me for a little while now.

“It caused a lot of controversy, and a few years later when I came back with Ipswich, the Norwich fans made it very clear how they felt.

“The fans had made a point they were going to turn up early and just absolutely give me dog’s abuse – and they did.

“My advice to him? Go and enjoy it. Go and maximise what you can.

“But expect it’s not going to be very pleasant.”

Meanwhile, former Norwich City winger Onel Hernandez said: “I told him [Nunez] you know if you consider a move there [Ipswich] what would happen. I explained to him everything. He knew about it.

“I said this to him, ‘if I get a chance at playing against you, I will f*cking break you’.

“I don’t believe that Norwich City would ever consider to sell him to that club… Because of the fans. For the fans, that would be a disaster, and it is a f*cking disaster!

“For all we are standing for as Norwich City supporters, in my opinion, that is a disaster for what’s happened there… I told him, ‘I couldn’t believe that this is even possible’.

“This is a disgrace move from him. I absolutely agree with everyone. He was one of my good friends, but obviously, with that move, I’m not sure if I want to continue that friendship with him.

“Football is not just business, football means much more for some people than just business.

“You have to think about the people that support and spend their hard-earned money week in-week out and what they stand for. Some things you can’t just take with money, it is history.”
