Ipswich left ‘disgusted’ at ‘hateful’ video directed at Bolton player

Ipswich Town say they are to investigate after being left ‘disgusted’ at a ‘hateful’ viral video directed at a particular Bolton player.

The high-flying Trotters pulled off a stunning 5-2 comeback victory over the Tractorboys in a pulsating League One encounter with five goals coming in a blistering first half.

However, footage coming from one idiot has got everyone talking, with the club being urged to give him a life ban from stadiums.

The Club is aware of a video on social media that appears to have been filmed during today’s fixture with Bolton Wanderers at Portman Road.

We are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, and we have made the relevant authorities aware, including the police.

Ipswich Town Football Club does not tolerate discrimination of any kind and will not hesitate to take strong, but appropriate, action.

We encourage supporters to report any such behaviour by speaking to their nearest steward or through the Kick It Out app.

We will not be commenting more at this time.

Wanderers also commented on the video, saying: “We’re disgusted to have learned of discriminatory and hateful comments directed at Dapo Afolayan in a video that appears to have been filmed by an Ipswich fan during today’s game.

“We show our full support to Dapo and commend the direct approach to taking action by Ipswich Town.”

Earlier in the week, Wanderers forward Elias Kachunga received a series of messages containing racist language on social media.

The Football Association recently urged social media companies to “step up and take accountability” including taking action to “ban abusers from their platforms”.

Dapo Afolayan scored a brace, Eoin Doyle got one from the penalty spot, Josh Sheehan two minutes into the second half and George Johnston three minutes before the hour to secure the 5-2 victory.

The hosts opened the scoring through Macauley Bonne in the fifth minute with Bolton’s Ricardo Santos putting the ball into his own net after 30 minutes.

Wes Burns sent a cross in for Bonne to steer the ball home for the opener, then Afolayan was on hand to equalise for the visitors who took the lead when Kane Vincent-Young putting in a challenge on Afolayan in the penalty area and Doyle converted the resulting spot-kick.

Burns saw his cross from the right turned in past his own goalkeeper by Santos and Afolayan was there again with his second just before the break to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Defending by Ipswich was slacking, and that led to Sheehan and Johnstone adding the fourth and fifth goals.

Bonne struck the woodwork as a host of boos was sounded around at the final whistle with the home side (who were labelled promotion candidates pre-season) sitting 22nd in the table as Bolton go up to third.

The Blues are yet to win in seven games in all competitions this season, with a host of boos greeting the final whistle at Portman Road.

Cook brought in 19 players this summer following a takeover of the club in April.

“As a manager like myself, who I’d like to call experienced now, it is on me,” he told BBC Radio Suffolk. “This is my job.

“It is an honour to manage clubs like this and to get better and to where you want to be, you have to feel pain. We certainly felt pain today.

“We have to offer our fans more and I shoulder all that. It is what I have been brought in to do and what I have done at other clubs.

“It is probably the lowest point of my career. I will take that like a man. My job is to solve problems and that is something we will work hard to do.”

As mentioned, Ipswich have been left ‘disgusted’ at ‘hateful’ video directed at a Bolton player…

@JamesNS19: Disgusting. Lifetime ban

@teddystamp: literally no excuses, thing that pisses me off the most is the people in the background laughing

@DNieL14817326: This is absolutely vile

@4lexBwfc: @IpswichTown please see this

@Stesmith1992: Fucking mong, good luck to him going to anymore matches after this 👋🏻

@david4charnock: Remember this is a grown adult not a teenager who trying to show off with his mates

@devere306: A couple of years ago, fans on a major forum were clubbing together to pay for his season ticket as he was saying his mental health was going to be affected if he couldn’t go. He was called out for spending his money elsewhere and just blagging a ticket.

@robpooley1: What an embrassment to the club let hope they get him banned

@SeanMar47565563: To think he supports the same club as me I’d totally embarrassing you lot won fair and square and couldn’t cope with a spanking hope this guy gets a life time ban and wish you lot well for the season👍

@BWFCJR: Get him gone

@ChrisDi94575737: This chap needs banning 100% but he also needs to be sat down and educated as to why he is being banned, he seems to be a vulnerable person but that’s simply no excuse for this kind of behaviour. @IpswichTown need to help him understand where and how he has gone so badly wrong

@cryptomaaaan: Regardless of the result, the fan In question and those egging him on do not reflect our club. As a town supporter I’ve never seen such disgusting behaviour. A dark day for Ipswich.

@stevecoates1980: Disgusted by this, by far the best player I’ve seen at Portman Road this season and I’m including our players in that assessment

@JoshuaKerr10: As an ipswich fan I am disgusted to hear this. This is not our club! This is a very small minority and hope they get what they deserve! Stay head strong Dapo Afolayan and congrats Bolton and smashing us today! I wasn’t there but I’ve heard you were super. Good luck This season!

@Meakin1Colin: I stand with Dapo and all who have to endure this kind of abuse. Nobody should have to go through this. It’s 2021 not 1821.

@RazSelby: Find the culprit/s and put them away for a few weeks. As an Ipswich fan im ashamed but it seems of late bigotry and racism is seen as acceptable by a vocal but significant minority. Without consequences it will only get worse.

@Uppo1963: I’m an Ipswich fan and I’m disgusted at this. It’s just plain wrong

@ollyfayers: You’ll see from the support that the players get at Ipswich for taking the knee that this is something that us fans take an extremely dim view of. I’m sure the club will do what’s needed, and I hope that this doesn’t ruin Dapo’s day given how well he played.

@Holby23: As an Ipswich fan who was at the game today I am disgusted and embarrassed by this. Bolton were fantastic today and I am really sorry that this disgraceful behaviour has undermined your win. This person does not represent any of us or the the Blue Army. So sorry.

@holliemarkwell: Disgusting behaviour! I’m so sorry this is coming from a so called Ipswich fan, believe me when I say itfc fans do not support this behaviour! It’s a minority of Ipswich fans that act this way, I’m hoping they find them all and ban them for their disgusting behaviour

@Liam_bwfc: He is deleting his timeline right now. Hide all you want nob head but you’re getting a court date for this

@ollyfayers: Christ alive. This guy is an embarrassment to my club, #itfc. @IpswichTown, we seem to have a fan audibly saying this kind of stuff at our games. Shouldn’t be allowed.

@HangryHippo91: @IpswichTown what are you going to do about this? Or do you condone threats of violence and racism? “should have been hanged years ago”, “hope he dies of AIDS”… or do we need to refer it to @SuffolkPolice?

1. Why would you say these things?
2. Why would you record yourself saying these things?
And 3. Why would you share the recording of yourself saying these things?
Keep this idiot away from Portman Road. #ITFC
