Investigation launched as fight breaks out between fans and footballer at non league match

An investigation has been launched as a fight breaks out between fans and a footballer at a non league match on Saturday afternoon.

Minehead saw their of promotion hopes in the First Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League take a dent after losing 2-1 at home to Stockwood Green.

Another Billy Coombs header and a late winner from Will Banks saw Stockwood Green come away with all three points.

The result means Minehead sit 6th in the standings with 36 points from 20 games played, but are 11 points behind top of the table Congresbury. Stockwood Green are 5th with 37 points from 19 games played.

2nd are Wrington Redhill First with 41 points from 22 games, while Ashton & Backwell United are 3rd with 41 points from 21 games. Westfield sit 4th with 38 points from 20 games.

And it’s fair to say things boiled over with a brief club statement since being issued now that a video is doing the rounds online.

One Facebook user, Michael Lewis Wells, wrote: “Just seen the video of the Minehead fans piling in and thumping their own players in the head. Sent the video to the police. Any comments from Minehead AFC?”

Minehead posted via their official Facebook page on Sunday afternoon: “We are fully aware and disappointed by the incident that happened at the club yesterday afternoon.

“This is currently being investigated and the relevant authorities are involved.

“As this is an active investigation, no further comments will be made from us during this time.”
