An investigation has been launched after a non league match was marred by a ‘cowardly act’ with a fan taken to hospital.
It came in the Northern Counties East League Division One match between Worsbrough Bridge and Horbury Town on Wednesday (4th September) night, with both clubs issuing a statement on the incident.
Horbury won the game 4-0, Billy Mole, Gibril Bojang, James Cusworth and Isaac Donlon getting on the scoresheet, and it could have been by an even bigger scoreline, with chances saved or hitting the woodwork.
Worsbrough Bridge AFC (@WorsbroughBFC) posted a tweet after the game, saying: “There was an incident that took place this evening which was completely unacceptable & we send our apologies to all connected with @Horbury_TownFC.
“We will work with our friends at Horbury over the coming days to identify the person concerned & take appropriate action.”
Horbury Town FC also spoke about what happened, writing: “The club would like to place on record that they will work alongside Worsbrough Bridge Athletic FC following an incident that occurred after the second goal was scored where a Horbury fan was struck by an instrument and has been taken to hospital to be checked over. We will work tirelessly to find the person responsible and ensure the appropriate action is taken.
“A cowardly act which shouldn’t happen anywhere, never mind at a football game.
“If anyone has any information on the person responsible, they are urged to come forward to help with the investigation.”

Well beaten eventually on three night against a strong @Horbury_TownFC side.
A keeper error, and debatable 2nd half penalty made it 0-2 before 2 quick 90th+ goals sealed a deserved win for the visitors in front of 141 fans.

Horbury Town First Team Manager & Co-Chair Darren Barnes (@BarnesyDaz) put up a post, which read: “A great win & performance by @Horbury_TownFC this evening, fully deserved. Thanks to @WorsbroughBFC for assisting in the assault of our fan. Let’s get them banned & arrested. 🔴⚫️”
Worsbrough Bridge AFC Chairman Mark Booth (@markbwbfc) replied: “Trust me what happened tonight is completely unacceptable and we will leave no stone unturned to find the person involved and will cooperate however we can.”
Worsbrough’s Luke Smith (@Lukesmuger) added: “We will do our best to sort it mate.”

Social media users gave their reaction with an investigation launched after the non league match between Worsbrough and Horbury was marred by a ‘cowardly act’ with a fan taken to hospital…
Darrell Cook: What is an instrument
Chris Rushforth: it was a child’s metal scooter to the back of the guys head
Ian Hepworth: Darrell Cook guitar, piano, double bass, drums etc. Your choice
Darrell Cook: Jesus why didn’t they say that.
Simon Kelly: Ian Hepworth How ‘not’ amusing you make light of the fact that a supporter of Non League football (or any sport for that matter) who has taken time out, midweek, to travel to follow their club, has been assaulted and injured needing hospital treatment. What would your reaction have been had the situation been reversed?
Ian Hepworth: Simon Kelly apologies for trying to bring a bit of humour to what must have been a shocking incident my friend. Nothing apart from trying to make anyone smile if they needed it. Sorry if not taken that way…
@AliAdairSax: Was stood just behind it. Disgraceful especially with kids about. Happy to give a statement if needed, and hope the bloke hit is ok.
@orodelancs: That’s awful to read and has no place in football
Chris Rushforth: Only negative from a fantastic evening. Absolutely no place in the game for this level of violence and cowardice. Thoughts with the Town fan who was assaulted and I hope the CCTV directly above the incident is working and helps identify the scumbags and they are brought to justice!! #ProudToBeTown 🔴⚫️
Mel Moyes: unbelievable
Kevin Watson: Hope you get who did this watching a game of footy idiots
Jason Lee: what is happening to the state of our beautiful game?! i know this is a minority but boy are we seeing incidents more than ever especially in non league these days. can’t even go to a game of football, in this case the 10th tier of English football, without receiving such vile abuse, getting struck in an attack, being hospitalised. hope the culprit is severely punished, disgusting to hear
Nathan Phelps: Here’s hoping the injured fan is alright and taken care of
