Incredible scenes as York score 96th minute winner to go two points clear of Rochdale

There were incredible scenes as York City score a 96th minute winner to go two points clear of Rochdale in the National League.

The Minstermen grabbed a stoppage winner thanks to Malachi-Fagan Walcott, taking his side past the 100-point mark in the table.

York’s opponents Altrincham had gone ahead when Jimmy Knowles sent a loose ball past the keeper on 36 minutes.

Ollie Banks got a leveller for the hosts immediately after with a superb finish finish, with Hiram Boateng also having a chance come back off the post.

Then came Fagan-Walcott, sparking wild scenes from a sold-out crowd of 8,162. Rochdale could only draw 0-0 with Hartlepool at Victoria Park. 3 games to go, York and Rochdale meet on the last day of the season, as if you need reminding of that one.

York City boss Stuart Maynard said, per York Press: “The crowd, like I said on Friday, they played a massive part today.

“For me, the atmosphere here today was probably the best I’ve experienced here, it was absolutely incredible.

“We said that if we can get this place as loud as that, the energy gets onto the pitch.

“You don’t even think about it, you keep running and that’s what it takes.

“It takes us all, we’re all in this together and it’s another win for us all together.

“The fans, us, the owners, we’re all in this together and we’ve won that game together.

“It’s been incredible, but we’ve done nothing yet.

“I keep saying it, we are breaking records but the only record we want is to make sure that we get promoted out of this division.

“If we can give them memories to this fanbase, I’d be so, so proud.

“They deserve it, the up’s and down’s, the highs and lows that they’ve experienced over the years.

“I believe that this is a club on the up, that is only going one way.

“We’ve just got to keep going, keep fighting. There’s a lot of points to play for and we’ll take it one game at a time.”

Rochdale’s Jim McNulty said: “It’s a good point, against a good team, a tough a difficult place to come. I think they’re on the back of trying to get solid after a damaging result a couple of games ago.

“They just took a good point away at Scunthorpe, the same score line and I think they were still in that mindset today. I think it was a game that we were the better team in and we had the better chances in a tight issue affair but I can think of four moments straight away where I think we very nearly scored.

“I thought the team as a whole were outstanding defensively, which was something that was very important, in response to our last game and it was in line with how we’ve performed all season without the ball, which, is is excellent in in terms of what we were hoping to achieve on that side of the ball pregame.

“And yeah, another rarity in that we weren’t able to score today. I couldn’t tell you the last time that was. But yeah, I think we were I think we were the better team in a tighter fair and yet had the greater
chances within the game certainly to win it and we wasn’t able to today.

“But we know exactly what we need to do. It was only the second time this season that we we failed to score.”

@Browny_90: Need to sit down at some point and work out every club record we’ve broken this season. Continuing our record run of successive matches scored in. Now the highest attendance at the LNER has been done and we’ve tied our all time highest points record. #ycfc

@JimibCalverley: The greatest club in the planet. What a team. The best season ever, Rochdale have made it so intense and completely enthralling. There could still be twists in the last three, but we’ve edged ahead….in the 96th minute. One job at a time, trust the process. KTF. #ycfc
