Incredible drama on final day of 2022/23 Championship season with playoffs places confirmed

There was incredible drama on the final day of the 2022/23 Championship season with the playoffs places confirmed on Monday.

Coming into it, we knew that Coventry, Millwall, Sunderland, West Brom and Blackburn were battling for final two play-off spots.

Burnley and Sheffield United were already promoted while we also knew Reading, Blackpool and Wigan are going down to League One.

Right, time to see how it’s played out, take a look for yourself below…

GOAL: Millwall 1-0 Blackburn – Duncan Watmore (8 mins)
Millwall’s thunderous opening brings a well-deserved reward. Blackburn again pinned in its own box and the ball falls to Duncan Watmore who is level with the penalty area. After a brief pause, the referee says goal. The ball was two yards beyond the line.

DISALLOWED GOAL (11 mins) – Millwall 1-0 Blackburn
It’s so close to a 2nd. Zian Flemming’s free-kick hit the inside of the post. Tom Bradshaw is first on the rebound, and he puts the ball into the empty goal. The Den is in a frenzy. He is adjudged offside, but by a very small margin.

GOAL: Swansea 0-1 West Brom – Okay Yokuslu (13 mins)
West Brom still has slim hopes of making the play-offs despite Swansea’s shambles at the back. The Baggies punish them for giving the ball away two times in just 30 seconds. Ryan Manning, a Swans defender, is fumbling with the ball at the edge of his box. He is then dispossessed. Okay Yokuslu, in the middle of the box, takes his time to fire his shot.

GOAL: Norwich 0-1 Blackpool – Morgan Rogers (15 mins)

GOAL: Millwall 1-1 Blackburn – Adam Wharton (22 mins)
Blackburn have suddenly risen to the occasion! Adam Wharton’s stunning strike means that the game is on for fans at the Den and the Coventry, Sunderland, West Brom supporters keeping an eye. Joe Rankin Costello passes the ball to Wharton who, after taking a touch, curls a beautiful shot from around 20 yards into the bottom right corner, just beyond George Long’s reach.

GOAL: Middlesbrough 0-1 Coventry – Gustavo Hamer (22 mins)
Coventry has the lead as a reward for their early dominance. Gustavo Hamer, who was put away by the referee, set up Matty Goden at the edge of box. However the touch was poor. Hamer was on the D’s edge, and took a touch to set himself up and then arrowed in a low shot past Zack Steffen.

GOAL: Swansea 1-1 West Brom – Luke Cundle (26 mins)
Swansea delivers a devastating blow out of the blue! Luke Cundle, who was crashing into the box from the other side, flicked his orange boot over Alex Palmer’s goal. Baggies’ defending was poor and they are currently unable to reach the top six or play-offs.

GOAL: Burnley 1-0 Cardiff – Josh Brownhill (27 mins)

GOAL: QPR 0-1 Bristol City – Mark Sykes (28 mins)

GOAL: Burnley 2-0 Cardiff – Ashley Barnes (31 mins)

GOAL: Millwall 2-1 Blackburn – Duncan Watmore (37 mins)
Duncan Watmore is at it again! Blackburn must be in a state of shock. Millwall attack from a Rovers’ corner. Oli Burke’s ball forward should have been dealt with but left-back Harry Pickering headed it past goalkeeper Aynsley pears. Watmore sees the ball, gets it and scores.

GOAL: Millwall 3-1 Blackburn – Oliver Burke (39 mins)
Oliver Burke could have just secured the Lions play-off position less than two minutes after he scored. The Scot is allowed to play the ball on the right, and is not closed down. He finds the far corner of the goal with his shot from the edge. The Den is rocking.

GOAL: Middlesbrough 1-1 Coventry – Cameron Archer (45+4 mins)
Middlesbrough equaliser. Cameron Archer swings the ball to the roof of the net after a ball was not cleared enough. Coventry has the one point needed to qualify for the play-offs. It’s only one point now.

GOAL: Millwall 3-2 Blackburn – Joe Rankin-Costello (51 mins)
Joe Rankin-Costello halves the deficit. Ben Brereton Diaz weighs up a free-kick on the edge of the box for a long time. His set-piece is low and on target with George Long parrying it. Callum Brittain forces a save from the rebound and Rankin-Costello slams the loose ball home.

GOAL: Huddersfield 1-0 Reading – Josh Koroma (49 mins)

GOAL: Swansea 1-2 West Brom – Semi Ajayi (54 mins)
Swansea’s box is a tense place with many shots blocked or deflected. Semi Ajayi thumps the ball from outside the six-yard area into the goal to give his side the lead.

GOAL: Birmingham 0-1 Sheff Utd – Oli McBurnie (53 mins)

GOAL: Preston 0-1 Sunderland – Amad Diallo (55 mins)
Amad Diallo, a Manchester United loanee, decides that the passing game isn’t working so he fires a rocket from 22 yards into the goal. The current situation won’t allow for a play off spot, but it will put pressure on Millwall or Coventry.

GOAL: QPR 0-2 Bristol City – Sam Bell (55 mins)

GOAL: Burnley 3-0 Cardiff – Scott Twine (59 mins)

GOAL: Birmingham 0-2 Sheff Utd – James McAtee (56 mins)

West Brom give Olivier Ntcham a lot of freedom with the ball on the edge the box. The Swansea player pulls the trigger, the ball flies by Alex Palmer, the goalkeeper, who was frozen on his line. It dips in the corner of the goal. Baggies’ hopes of finishing in the top six are on a knife-edge.

GOAL: Preston 0-3 Sunderland – Jack Clarke (65 mins)
