Hull City finally confirm appointment of new head coach; first interview given

Hull City finally confirm the appointment of new head coach in Liam Rosenior and his first interview has been given.

The 38-year-old returns to a club he spent five seasons with as a player between 2010 and 2015, and it’s gone down rather well with fans.

Rosenior started the season in interim charge of League One outfit Derby County and replaces Shota Arveladze after the Georgian was sacked in September.

He was in attendance at Tuesday’s home defeat by Middlesbrough and his first Championship game in charge will be at Millwall on Saturday.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Hull City are delighted to announce Liam Rosenior as the club’s new head coach.

The highly regarded 38-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at the MKM Stadium.

The former full-back returns to East Yorkshire having made 161 appearances in black and amber during a five-year spell from 2010 to 2015, winning promotion from the Championship in 2012/13.

Rosenior was a key member of the Tigers team that secured our highest-ever league finish of 16th in the Premier League and reached a first FA Cup final in 2013/14.

The ex-Bristol City, Fulham and Reading defender took up his first coaching position at Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018 following his retirement from playing, working as assistant coach with their Under-23s.

Joining Derby County’s coaching set-up in July 2019, initially as specialist first-team coach to Phillip Cocu, he was promoted to assistant manager under Wayne Rooney in January 2021.

Rosenior helped Derby stave off relegation in 2020/21 and although the Rams succumbed to the drop last season, they put up a valiant effort amid off-field uncertainty and points deductions.

Following Rooney’s departure, he was handed the reins on an interim basis and presided over seven wins from his 12 games in charge, leaving Derby seventh in League One.

We would like to thank Andy Dawson for his efforts as interim head coach and can confirm he will remain part of the club’s coaching staff.

The full make-up of Rosenior’s backroom team will be confirmed in due course.

Liam Rosenior has told his new Hull City players he wants them to be brave as they try to play themselves out of Championship relegation battle.

He refuses to accept that any club can be in a relegation battle at this point of the season but knows he needs results.

He’s determined to play the game the right way, needs his players to be of the same mindset and was asked to spell out what it was in his first press conference back at the club he served as a player from 2010 to 2015.

“I think it’s brave,” he said. “I want to dominate and play out from the back. I want to have players in high attacking positions, constant full width to stretch the opposition but I also want an energy, an intensity and a pressing without the ball.

“Even last season at Derby (when he was Wayne Rooney’s assistant) the identity was clear. The biggest thing for me you need to play this way is to be brave. You speak about winning headers or tackles but it’s about being brave to get on the ball after you’ve made a mistake.

“I don’t mind players making mistakes, I want them to express themselves and not hide from the ball. That’s going to be really important to play the way I want to play.”

Choosing the right job was important and adds his relationship with chief executive Tan Kesler and chairman Acun Ilicali was vital.

“Obviously I’ve got a great affinity with the football club, it’s a club I love and had some great times with but it can’t be the only thing you take into account,” he said.

“In terms of thinking logically about taking the job it was the chemistry between myself Tan and the chairman in terms of what they want from a manager. If you’re working for a club where you philosophies aren’t aligned, it’s never going to work.

“As soon as we had the first conversation about the way I want to play football, the principles – and not just footballing principles but values for people we were all completely on the same page and that’s key for success so I feel really comfortable coming here – not in an arrogant way, but comfortable that if I do the job in the way I believe I can we can all be successful together.

“As a young manager it’s very important to be fortunate enough to find the right people who respect the way you work.”
