Huddersfield players get ‘absolute pelters’ from their fans after defeat to Wigan

Huddersfield players get ‘absolute pelters’ from their fans after a 1-0 defeat to Wigan in League One on Saturday afternoon.

A much needed win for the Latics saw them moved out of the League One drop zone, while defeat dented the Terriers’ play-off hopes, sitting 6th with 52 points from 35 games played, but teams below them have games in hand. (7th – Reading – 51 points, played 34, 8th – Stevenage – 51 points, played 33, 9th – Wycombe – 50 points, played 34).

Huddersfield had the stronger first half with Ryan Hardie hitting the post and Alfie May’s follow-up being cleared off the line by Morgan Fox.

Bali Mumba also had his effort deflected onto the bar, and that rebound from Alfie May kept out by Sam Tickle, and a second rebound from Marcus Harness nodded out by Owen Moxon.

Wigan came out a much better side in the second half, going into the lead, Jensen Weir smashing home from 25 yards on 61 minutes.

Huddersfield nearly scored an equaliser on the verge of full time, Tickle with a brilliant save from Harness’ shot.

Huddersfield boss Liam Manning said, per Yorkshire Post: “The second half was just disappointing. We never really asked enough questions, or created enough to worry them.

“Especially when we went behind, the way we finished the game, I thought we helped them put a little bit. We didn’t get our delivery right, and when we did get the delivery right, we gave away a cheap foul which allowed them to take the free-kick and kill the game a little bit.

“We never really generated any momentum at the end of the game which, when you’re behind, you would hope to do.

“I thought the second half was a bit of nothing really to be honest, in terms of neither team really created much.

“Yes there were passages where both teams had the ball, but they didn’t really progress it or create anything of any quality.

“That means it’s even more important not to give anything away like a set-piece…that’s the really frustrating bit.”

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell said: “The performance in spells was excellent. There are still areas we can definitely do better, but the character, the commitment, the attitude of the players since I came in has been incredible.

“And I’ve always said that takes you a long, long way. When you have that, you start to get the breaks that we got today, and that’s now two amazing results at home, and two clean sheets.

“And the thing is, I know these players can be so much better, there is so much improvement to come from them.

“If they can keep applying themselves the way they are, then I’m sure we’ll only continue to improve as the season goes on.

“I thought the fans again were tremendous, especially at the end of the game, when we were a bit under the cosh.

“We weren’t quite doing what we were doing at the beginning of the game, getting out to the ball, which is understandable when you’ve not won as many games as you’d like.

“It’s how you can see the game out, how you can get over the line, but we will review that, we will help the players, and we will make sure we’re better for it.

“But overall I thought we deserved to win the game, because in spells we were the better team, and we showed more of that firm desire than Huddersfield did.”

Here’s the social media reaction as the Huddersfield players get ‘absolute pelters’ from their fans after defeat to Wigan…

@j_krawczuk: That was an absolute disgrace. Why are we passing slow, sideways, backwards? No purpose. Negative football gets you negative outcomes. Were Norwich fans right about Liam Manning? I’m losing interest in watching this rubbish. No chance of play offs. #HTAFC

@Dave_w08: Pathetic performance… slow, predictable, no urgency.. where’s the quality??? Not good enough.. May has to score first half other than that very poor, Wigan bottom 3 why aren’t we going there and making a mark on the game… sick to death of this team away from home

@eggandbed: So Manning without coaching and letting the players play won three games in a row, now he’s had chance to get us playing how he wants we can’t beat relegation threatened teams. You don’t need tactics in this league when we have better players #htafc

@j_littlerr: Absolutely rubbish. They’re such a poor side, but made us look like amateurs today. Probably because half our players deserve to be amateurs based on this season.

@JonesLee1231977: Get the players in and tell them clearly – play for the club or piss off . Fans will very soon turn and this could get nasty.

@MarkLovell27: Kevin Nagle’s ownership in these 3 years has been absolutely horrendous. Relegated in first season. Fail to go straight back up don’t even finish in playoffs. 3rd season looks like we will fail to make playoffs yet again. He’s made way too many poor decisions #htafc

@MRXCII: It’s about time the players started to take some accountability. Duff, Grant and now Manning but absolutely nothing is different to the moment we restarted life in League One. This season will follow the same pattern as last as we gradually fade into the abyss. It’s rotten.

@GraemeWalton7: Last three away games exactly the same . How can you win games with nobody up front? Passing backwards and sideways, totally boring.

@pete_3200: @KevinNagleMLS what now Kev? That was utterly embarrassing

@Suna_htafc: I’m just so tired of this. We’re going nowhere, we’re not improving. Our club is cursed
