Huddersfield fans fume at one of the worst refereeing decisions of the season

Huddersfield Town fans fume at one of the worst refereeing decisions of the season after Alex Mowatt faked receiving a boot to the face.

The Championship clash between West Brom and the Terriers at The Hawthorns saw late goals from Karlan Grant and Andy Carroll to help his side hit back to earn a precious point.

A goal in each half from Danny Ward had put Carlos Corberan’s automatic promotion-chasing squad in control of the game, however a controversially-awarded penalty allowed Karlan Grant to halve the deficit against his former employers.

Andy Carroll then glanced in a cross to level within 60 seconds, high-fiving a young girl in his celebration, and there was even time for Grant to hit the crossbar in the final minute of normal time.

The main talking point was referee Matthew Donohue awarded a penalty to the hosts after Mowatt had put his head in the way of Sorba Thomas’ clearance before dramatically falling to ground trying to hold his head as if the boot connected with his face, yet when watching the replay, it’s clear the Wales international got the ball first and his foot was on it’s way back down before the face got close enough.

Carlos Corberan thought referee Matthew Donohoue got the match-turning decision wrong, though still felt Huddersfield Town could have avoided a draw which felt like a defeat.

“I think it was very obvious that we were better than them during 80 minutes but the penalty changed the feeling and the emotion of the game,” he reflected.

“The penalty changed the whole game and the fact they scored very fast (after the penalty) could have cost us all the points but the team reacted well and the last minutes and we could even have got all three (Sam Johnstone saving from Jon Russell in stoppage time).

“My feeling was that for 80 minutes we were much better than them and for 10 minutes they created the feeling that we gave them a point we could have avoided.”

Corberan had not seen the incident back when he spoke to the media, but thought the referee got his decision wrong.

“From my view from the bench I didn’t see a penalty,” he insisted.

“Sorba touched the ball but it’s not easy of course for the referee. He has to be 100 per cent sure because these decisions can change a game.

“Sorba 100 per cent wouldn’t do that again but he was winning the ball.

“The second factor for me in us not taking the three points was that as soon as we conceded the first goal we conceded a second. We were dominating the game in attack in the previous 80 minutes.

“Today it feels like a defeat, tomorrow we will feel like that.

“We have to learn from this but it’s not easy to learn from because without that I feel the team would have earned three points.”

West Brom boss Steve Bruce had the opposite view of the penalty, and felt it had been an even game.

“We’ve gifted them two goals – Sam will have a sleepless night, but it won’t be the only time he makes a mistake and it is how you react that is important,” he said.

“Apart from that, I didn’t think there was much in the game.

“It looked like a penalty for me although I haven’t seen it back.

“From our point of view, we showed a bit of fight and spirit to get something from the game. In earlier games, especially against Swansea at home, we have given up for too easily.”

As mentioned, Huddersfield fans fume at one of the worst refereeing decisions of the season…

@haighyhtafc87: And the fact mowatt was actually outside the box aswell awful decision wasn’t a pen free kick if anything a yellow card to mowatt shocking

@wrk04: No contact. Foot was waist high, not high. Mowatt bent down to try to head the ball. Mowatt simulated contact which probably won the decision. Cost us 2pts. Action needed against Mowatt. #htafc

@KeighleyPete: …and Sorba Thomas even pulled his foot back when he realised the WBA player’s head was so low. @RefereeHalsey

@Stevros1988: What do you reckon @HACKETTREF @RefereeHalsey? Penalty and yellow card or defensive free kick and yellow card for simulation?

@D9Jordan: Shocking decision. Shifted the momentum and changed the game completely. I’ve not seen any talk of diving either because Mowatt wasn’t touched in the slightest and he rolled a few times. But thats just me 👀

@JackSommers1: Robbed. #htafc

@Allens1908: Alexa please show me how to cheat and gain penalty.

@VitalHtafc: Mowatt is a grade A cheat. Pass it on. Goes down holding his head despite not being touched at all and chucking himself to the floor

@RyanHTAFC: Was finally getting over the decision and now I’ve seen that he wasn’t even in the box… weekends ruined I’m off to bed

@MabelBluebell: Shocking decision

@philhirstgreen: One of the worst decisions of all time. I hate VAR but it is needed for shit like that. #ROBBED #HTAFC

@htfc_danny: Foul or not.. he’s not even in the box 😂😂😂😂😂 up the town

@Reaneeyy: Shambles man, ruined my night completely. Never seen a pen!

@dylan__htafc: No contact made and not even in the fucking box… the refs will probably just apologise to the club, and then do the same shite mistakes next week. Pointless

@umbertludd: Foot at slightly above waist height. Wins ball. Defender ducking into it and then dives. Full (shit)house

@TROOPSTER147: Are penalties given for fouls outside the box now, and it wasn’t even a foul

@MHTAFCR: Shocking decision 😤😤😤

@matan1993: Alex Mowatt is a cheating cunt

@mwwhtafc81: Only player getting a yellow card here should have been the @WBA player for diving what an absolute shambles of a decision this was.

@temcterrier1977: My god. This was a penalty 😂😂😂

@MFirth26: Blatant cheating this… Sorba didn’t even touch him, and don’t even think it’s in the box. This decision swayed the game in their favour, and think we’d have won if it wasn’t for this (albeit the second is just awful defending from us!)
#htafc

@lewiishall: How is this a penalty then?

@htafcTY: Jesus Christ, I know we’ve had some refs favour us this season. But this is next level shocking

@huddsladav: Like I said never a pen, raging

@htafc_ben: Blatant cheating.

@HtfcJosh16: Gets the ball first then doesn’t even touch Mowatt until he throws himself at Thomas. Fucking joke. #htafc

@IML91: Got the ball and not even the box if it’s for the high foot. Skybet reffing is on another level.

@JerryHinnen: I don’t want VAR in the Championship, but there are some days I want VAR in the Championship, and today is one of them
