Huddersfield and Stockport fans clash in the stands; Lee Grant faces boos following defeat

Huddersfield and Stockport fans clash in the stands, then Terriers boss Lee Grant faces boos from the home fans following defeat.

Stockport secured a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield in League One, despite playing with 10 men for part of the match.

Oliver Norwood scored a penalty on the verge of half time, and Odin Bailey added a second in the 78th minute when on a counter-attack.

Huddersfield’s Bojan Radulovic scored a late header, but it was only a consolation as Stockport held on for the win, marking Huddersfield’s first home loss of the season.

The result leaves Huddersfield sitting 6th in the League One table, while Stockport move up to 7th, both on 19 points from 11 games played.

Seems however there was trouble in the stands and outside the ground, with a number of videos being posted on social media.

Tensions flared between Huddersfield and Stockport fans during the match, said to have escalated after Stockport’s second goal.

Young fans from both sides engaged in gesturing, and verbal taunts, the situation got worse with objects, including bottles and a seat, being thrown, primarily initiated by Huddersfield fans, with Stockport fans retaliating.

Older Huddersfield fans were criticised for exacerbating the situation. Poor stewarding and the placement of home fans near away supporters were cited as contributing factors. Post-match, minor altercations continued outside.

Speaking to HTTV after the game, Huddersfield Town Manager Lee Grant said: “I don’t think we deserved to win. The performance level was well below what we’ve shown here in our first five league games.

“We’ve been strong here and I certainly feel like the start to the game worried me. It’s disappointing because we’re off the back of one of our best performances. Incredibly frustrating.

“There is no reason for us to be in a position where we’re in a good place and then we start the game very much the opposite. We can’t do that. It falls on us to be at our level, not below that level.

“We earn the right to have a player sent off and start to push, but we weren’t secure enough at the back.

“We have to take it on the chin and put the work in to make sure we’re in a better place next time around.

“There are some things that we have to work hard on to put right. We have to be better”

Stockport boss Dave Challinor said: “We maybe had a bit of good fortune with the penalty – there is a shirt pull, but it’s minimal, it’s soft.

“But I’ll counter that by saying we had a nailed-on penalty turned down after 15 minutes, so I think it balances itself out on the day.

“I thought we deserved to win. We had some adversity in terms of going down to 10 men and then after getting ourselves in front, conceding in the last minute to make the last two or three minutes or so edgy.

“But we played some brilliant stuff in the first half an hour and should have been in front. We get ourselves in front on the stroke of half-time, and we’ve then dealt with going down to 10 men seven minutes into the second half.

“It then becomes a difficult 40 minutes against a really good team, but I’m really proud of the way we’ve dug in. I’m disappointed with the goal that we’ve conceded from a set piece, but it’s three points.”

Twitter users reacted as Huddersfield and Stockport fans clash in the stands; and Lee Grant faces boos following defeat…

Mozzer said: “Off the pitch, I wasn’t over to the right-hand side of our section so I’ve no idea what set off the bottle chucking, unless it was simply some babyish home fans getting upset at losing. All seemed a bit unnecessary and definitely seemed to spill out of the ground afterwards. Not sure why – we’ve not really had much bother with each other in the past. Any ideas anyone?”

Sina: There’s a video from the Huddersfield end where a bunch of our 13 year old hard lads are giving it large behind an invisible wall in the stand, then they’re is a claim they started spitting at the Town fans. Hard to tell but don’t think we are the innocent party. Can see stuff getting lobbed both ways.

Mozzer: Cheers. Sounds like most weeks on the Pop Side when we had away fans in there. Difference being that the home fans laughed at the wannabes giving it the big one, rather than throwing bottles around (and that was true before they put the netting in after Gillingham lobbed stuff at us when they won league…).

contae: Young lads with a point to prove on both sides giving each other needle throughout the game, which steadily escalated and then spilled over when we scored our second. Wouldn’t pin the blame on either side particularly but there were definitely some older fans on their side who should have known much, much better once it all ignited. They were the ones who started chucking stuff.

vicar: There was no need for there to be home fans in there, it doesn’t make sense.

contae: None at all, it was just asking for trouble. Plenty of empty space elsewhere. Stewarding was properly insufficient too. Chally seemed to come over at the end to plead for a bit of calm but then a couple of their fans started hurling abuse at him and he gave it right back which, I’ll be honest, I thoroughly enjoyed.

suedehead: I was stood pretty much right in the middle of it. Lots of posturing and handbags throughout the game, plenty of young lads making a show of themselves, gesturing and what not but not actually wanting to follow through with any threats. There’s essentially a column of seats removed with a five foot high Perspex wall on either side separating the fans, it’s really close between the two groups. There was defo a concerted effort from our lot to up the ante towards the end as they moved a bit lower down away from the stewards and piled in. When I say piled in, obviously nobody actually properly piled in. Just stood there getting giddy and acting up. It would have been almost no effort to actually go for it if they wanted to, but they never do. I think the bottles initially came from Hudds and then we retaliated. Most were floated over as they were empty but the half full ones did come at some speed and could have done some damage if hit someone in the face. All very silly but these things always are.

Shepley Red: In the away end today. Huddersfield, ******* hell, tippy tappy, slow play nonsense, home fans booing and had enough of Lee Grant’s tactics. He’s basically trying to replicate Pep in League One! Given the money they paid out on new players in the summer then I’d be ******* fuming having to watch that, it was awful. On the flip side, Stockport were much the better side and deserved their lead. After 55 minutes they went down to 10 men and did they shut up shop… did they ****, credit to Dave Challinor, he went for it, they missed two great chances to extend their lead before getting a deserved second goal. At this point a number of home fans walked out

bighead: There’s a video of outside where one of the group ‘break’ the lines and run to the Huddersfield end. Not him nor those who were calling it on having a clue what to down with the situation. So they do the street fighter bounce for a bit.

scfc73: Strange. I thought the stewards i had interactions with were very courteous. Got asked to move because we were stood at the top of the stairs initially which I accept wasn’t the best place to stand. A young lad said he’d find us some decent seats if we’d kindly move, even said if we didn’t like the seats we could go back to where we were stood! (although I don’t think he really meant it (rofl) ) had a bit of a crack with some of the other stewards as well, even gave a female one a hug on the way out as she was quite helpful earlier in trying to sort a ticket issue out on entry. I thought in general they were far less annoying than the ones at E.P.

The Real Exile: The bottles certainly seemed to start from their side, a pair of very young lads behind us snapped the seat off that was probably the one thrown, stood with it in their hands like a pair of planks, tried to tell them to put it down its not worth getting in trouble for, also added about being on camera, looks like they didn’t listen 🙄 you don’t think when you are a young lad * well some of us at least, about how getting any kind of record can restrict what kind of job you can get etc.
