‘How we pull this off’ – Worthing stun fans by signing former Championship footballer

Worthing stun fans by signing former Championship footballer Glen Rea, who joins the National League South club on non-contract terms.

He could make his first appearance for the club in their league fixture at Hampton & Richmond Borough on Tuesday night.

Rea, a former Republic of Ireland U21 international, departed from the Hatters – now in the Premier League – by mutual consent last month.

He ended a seven-year stay in which he made 207 appearances, and now finds himself at Worthing, who sit in the cusp of the playoffs of the sixth tier.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Worthing Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of the versatile midfielder Glen Rea.

The 29-year-old joins the Rebels on non-contract terms and is available for selection for tonight’s match away at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The former Ireland U21 international left Premier League outfit Luton Town by mutual consent last month, ending a seven-year association with the Hatters where he made 207 appearances.

During that time Rea was part of the Luton teams that won promotion from League Two and League One, also helping them establish themselves in the Championship in the 2019/20 season.

After making just 13 appearances for the Hatters in the first half of the 21/22 season, Rea linked up with Wigan Athletic on loan in January 2022. Unfortunately, his spell was cut short after suffering a knee injury during the Latics’ 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon that season.

After missing nearly a year of football, Rea continued his rehab in the second half of last season on loan at Cheltenham, helping the Robins avoid the drop in League One.

Rea was born in Brighton and began his career with the Seagulls, signing his first professional contract in 2013. He made his debut for the Seagulls in 2015 before loan spells with Southend United and Luton Town, who he joined permanently in 2016.

Rea will wear the squad number 31 for the Rebels.

As mentioned, Worthing stun their fans by signing former Championship footballer Glen Rea…

@LutonAnalytics: Feels like we should all pick a home game of there’s when Luton aren’t playing and turn up to support him.

@LutonTownExile: We should all go to the St Albans and Hemel Hempstead games to watch him (if not already been played). He watches us on the terraces. We should do the same for him 🎩🎩🎩

@OllieElphick19: God I’m excited about this transfer, I have no idea how we have pulled this one off!!!

@londonshrimper: Blast from the past. Was on loan with us back in the 2015-16 season in League One. Spent the past seven years with Luton Town. Now dropped into the NL South. Seems to have had a tough time with knee injuries in recent seasons, but if fit would be a good signing at that level.

@FanHubHatter: Wow he’ll absolutely boss that division. Really thought he’d have got a deal in league 2 at the lowest so have to say it’s quite surprising he’s had to drop so low but hopefully he can work his way up again.

@lucastrussell87: Spoke to him Saturday asked if he’s going anywhere n told me no 😂
