How the National League table looks if Dover’s results are expunged has been revealed as the season reaches just over the halfway mark.
The last time the Kent based club played a league fixture was back in January 2021, and it looks extremely unlikely they can now finish the campaign. They have only played 15 games, whilst everyone else are around 30 games in.
The National League have confirmed there will be no relegation to Step 2 from the top tier of the non league pyramid after the Football Association put a block on the North and South Division mini-league, proposed by those clubs wishing to continue having appealed against their seasons being declared null and void.
But because Dover are the only team in the top division to stop playing, to ensure survival of their club, and now manager Andy Hessenthaler is worried there may be repercussions down the line.
“It was mooted there would be no relegation but when the North and South appealed the decision in terms of their leagues being made null and void, and they tried get a little mini-league going, they needed that ratified by the FA and unfortunately that has gone against them,” said Hessenthaler.
“Which didn’t surprise me I’ve got to say. I just didn’t know how it would work. Now it’s been confirmed there’s no relegation from our league but my worry is we still could be relegated because obviously there has got to be a decision made on ourselves in terms of our decision to stop playing and us being the only team who’s not.
“But I’m pretty much out of that. That will be decided by the powers that be. The chairman [Jim Parmenter] will have his people in place to deal with whatever comes our way and I’m sure he would appeal it. He has made that decision to stop for one reason and one reason only. To save the club and make sure we have football at Crabble next season.”
Other clubs in financial trouble continue to play and Hessenthaler has a theory. “My gut feeling is they are waiting for the league to make a decision on us,” he argued. “I think they are nervous of making the decision we’ve made and they may worry that the consequences of that mean they might not be in the division next season.
“Obviously the likes of King’s Lynn have just come up into the top non-league division so they are obviously concerned about that and I get that, I understand. But there’s no relegation and it’s almost costing them money to continue to play with all the travelling that’s involved in this league. There’s no money coming in and that’s where I don’t really understand it myself.
“It’s going to be an interesting few weeks to see whether they [the league] do make a decision on any punishment for ourselves if there is punishment.
“It’s a waiting game. They’ve obviously got to decide what to do with the points gained against us too in the 15 games we played. That’s going to have a big bearing on how the league table finishes.”
Time to see how the current National League table looks if Dover’s results are expunged…
The following clubs have NOT played DOVER this season, so their games played and points currently stay the SAME: Sutton, Hartlepool, FC Halifax, Chesterfield, Maidenhead, Wealdstone and Weymouth. The following clubs have PLAYED Dover but LOST so they do NOT lose any points: Notts County, Eastleigh and Barnet, however only the game played will be taken off (for example) Notts County would have played 26 games NOT the 27 shown in the League Table but NO points deducted, Boreham Wood would LOSE one point and 1 game deducted. ALL other teams that I have NOT mentioned in this message will have BOTH 3 points DEDUCTED plus 1 game DEDUCTED. So basically, it would be a 42 game season.
For those who may not know the table too well. At the end of the season, top place are crowned champions are are automatically promoted. 3rd and 4th enter the playoff semi finals, whilst 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th enter at playoff quarter final stage.
