Historic Welsh club withdraw from league with chairman labelled an egotist

Historic Welsh club Cefn Druids see their demise continue as they withdraw from league with chairman labelled an egotist.

Cefn Druids have withdrawn from the Cymru North for the 2023-24 season.

The Wrexham-based club said in a statement that they made the decision to leave Cymru North for 2023/24 due to a transfer suspension and a starting season with a reduced squad.

Cefn Druids’ management and playing staff left “collectively” in May claiming that they still owed them money.

Chairman Des Williams said that he was “appalled by their lack professionalism” and that the club was “financially solid”.

In 2022, the club was relegated from the Cymru Premier and in January, Druids were restricted for two transfer windows after they were charged with violating Fifa’s transfer guidelines in the previous season.

The FAW confirmed that it received a formal notification confirming the club’s withdrawal. It added that there were no plans to replace this club, and Cymru North will continue with 16 clubs in 2023-24.

CLUB STATEMENT:

We face a series of challenges that will affect our ability to play in the forthcoming season. The transfer ban is the biggest issue we have and we are faced with starting the season with a depleted squad. We will not have had our appeal against the FIFA transfer ban heard in time for the start of the 2023/24 season. This means starting the season with a small squad and gambling on winning the appeal and the ban being lifted but we would not be in a transfer window and so unable to sign new players.

The club has therefore withdrawn from the league and close the academy at all age groups with immediate effect. We will retain membership to the FAW but not play in FAW organised games.

We can now fight the transfer ban and not worry about time limits, contracts etc and devote the time to clear the club’s name. We can concentrate on our Futsal team and other interests that will sustain the club for years to come.

The business, Cefn Druids FC Limited, shall remain trading and retain the assets for use as a sports facility until we rejoin the league at a lower level. Our anchor tenants Gresford Athletic FC and Wrexham Ladies AFC are unaffected.

We will update our supporters as the situation develops and we would like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers and supporters for their support over the past few years and through the trying times of the lockdowns.

Just a month ago, the much loved historic Welsh club were in jeopardy after their manager and entire playing squad took to walk out.

The club finished 7th in the second tier this season following relegation from the Cymru Premier in 2022.

Druids, who are one of the oldest and most significant clubs in Wales, took part in the Europa League qualifying matches back in 2018.

Twitter users had their say as the historic Welsh club withdraw from their league with the chairman labelled an egotist…

@fearlessidzine: Fear the worst is yet to come

@mossfc1: Such a shame. Feel for all those academy lads and parents, not their fault. One sad individual that’s ruined so many dreams couldn’t run a bath. 🤡

@AaronBraisdell: Shocking! Big club with great facilities and a wide catchment area. With everything going on at Wrexham you’d thing they’d be able to use it and benefit from that. Poor how it’s come to this

@ben_wrecsam: Sad news. Any scope for wrexham to buy it maybe as new training facility?

@judge1783: Shambles of a once great club. Glad it’s been done before the season starts so other Cymru North clubs aren’t affected.

@siondavies: The smart thing to do is for @RMcElhenney and @VancityReynolds to buy the club and use it as a development club for Wrexham long term. Multi club model on a local level.… 🤔

@philbathers: A part of me is angry but more devastated to read this , all the work put into that club over the years to get them into Europe twice and to build an academy to give kids a platform to improve the game they love , ruined by 1 person who shouldn’t be anywhere near a football club

@bcb1878: That’s sad, great club & ground !!

@CMG_Reds: There only one person to blame for this total shambles of a once great club.

@gareth1864: All caused by one person!!!!! 😡😡😡😡

@TheWelshDragon9: What a shame for the community. He will still blame everyone else.

@leesywxm: Great club turned into an absolute shambles, should be ashamed of himself 🤡

@1919Bangor: Horrible news for such a historic club – the situation sadly resonates with all Bangor fans – All down to unscrupulous people who should be nowhere near the game. Good luck to the good football people of Cefn – Keep the faith ✊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

@Topblood73: As a Droylsden fan who has been through this, it’s really awful for them. Little town clubs going by the wayside whilst billions swish around the top of the game. This right here is proper football.

@CCFC1969: No surprise at all. So sad that a famous club has been ruined by poor ownership
