‘Heavy-handed’ police criticised over their handling of fans at Chelsea v West Ham

‘Heavy-handed’ police have been criticised over their handling of fans at the Chelsea v West Ham game on Sunday afternoon.

The clip surfaced online after the game and since gone on to get over a million views, as well as hundreds of comments.

GB News’ Darren Grimes reshared the video, and said in a tweet: “From West Ham and Chelsea game earlier today. The police are comfortable using force when it’s football fans or St George’s Day marchers, but find it supremely difficult to suppress hate parades calling for jihad and intifada on the streets of Britain.”

YouTuber ‘Football with Brownie!’ said after viewing the video: “Now Chelsea – West Ham today, we’re going to be talking about, it’s actually the attitude of the Metropolitan Police, now watch this video before I mention anything else, watch the video of West Ham fans walking past a Chelsea pub and there’s a police coord which is separating the fans…

“Now to me that was a bit of police heavy-handedness especially when they basically pinned that one guy to the wall, and then on floor to hand him police heavy-handedness.

“Now this is a Metropolitan Police who just a few weeks ago on political protests they allowed things to happen, but yet you know even back in my day in the 80s and early 2000s police claim that they move on since those days of treating football fans like dirt.

“Now to me, it was just banter which was going on between the both sets of fans nothing really and toward happen just banter, but the police in this incident could have been the architector of making banter into a real issue because of overhanded tactics.”

The game itself saw Chelsea boost their hopes of qualifying for European football next season by easily defeating West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

It only took 15 minutes for Chelsea to take the lead, with Cole Palmer being the quickest to react to a loose ball in the West Ham penalty area.

West Ham almost levelled immediately when Jarrod Bowen’s header hit the crossbar, but Chelsea dominated the game from that point onwards.

Conor Gallagher doubled Chelsea’s lead after 30 minutes, followed by Noni Madueke scoring the third goal with a header six minutes later.

Nicolas Jackson scored twice in the second half, sealing a very positive afternoon for the Blues.

The result means that with just three games left of the 2023/24 Premier League season, Chelsea seems to be on track for a strong finish, having climbed to 7th place and being just two points behind 6th-placed Newcastle. Meanwhile, West Ham, with two games left, remain in 9th place.
